About this property

12km North of Siena with a stunning view pool & tenniscourt 3 bedrooms ensuite

This beautiful property is a part of an old 16th century farm situated on the top of one of hills West of Castellina in Chianti. Casa Virginia has no stairs and you can walk straight to your private garden. It is furnished with genuine Tuscan country antiques and pictures some of which have been exihibited in the British Royal Academy. A wonderful place for an artist. The site has a marvellous view over endless rolling hills, vineyards and olive groves and is truly unique. Friends of its owners say the view is absolutely breathtaking on arrival. An Olympic size swimming pool plus childrens pool and tennis court is about 150 metres away at the other end of the grounds. There is easy access to Siena 12km and to Florence 48km by car on a free motorway or by local train. Train is a very relaxing way to make day visits. (EinBauernhaus nur 6 km von hier auf einem Huegel mit grossartiger Aussicht). Castellina is 6km away with excellent shops and food and first class restaurants! The whole area is full of the most marvellous restaurants. The house has its own garden offering privacy and an outdoor dining area with an incredible view of the surrounding countryside. The property faces West. Sunset with the sun sinking over the hills forty miles away or dawn with mist rising over the towers of San Gimignano are memorable. Look at the breakfast picture. We have Wfi & SatTV.
Wild life abounds as the area is protected and the woods around are full of various type of deer, wild boar, porcupines, red squirrels even in the garden, hares, all can be seen from time to time. Where else can you be swimming in a pool a watch a Golden eagle, or see a Pregrine Falcon hunting?
The whole farmstead dating from the 16th century was bought in 1986 by its current owner and others and converted into seven private houses. The surrounding gardens are beautifully maintained by our own gardener employed by the condominium. We also employ an estate manager and a housekeeper. On arrival the rooms are all ready with towels and beds prepared. The estate has a full Olympic size swimming pool and a smaller safety pool for children. There is a well maintained hard tennis court and a boules court. (Riesiger Swimmingpool mit Sprungbrett und Tennisplatz laden zur Erfrischung und zum Sport ein).
Our house Casa Virginia was the original milking parlour and grain store. The property is all on one floor with two steps (9inches) down from the kitchen into the dining room, and one smaller step (5inches) into the principle bedroom.
There are no staircases, useful if you are slightly impaired. All rooms are spacious with two of the bedrooms having doors directly into the garden. There is one step down (7inches) into the garden. The old grain store is now a splendid sitting room with high ceilings and an open Tuscan fireplace that may be used in winter. There is good central heating for winter stays
Although a quiet and secluded location, it is only 7 km to the highway exit and 6km to the local train station that can take you to Siena or Florence. Siena itself is 12km away via the autostrada a twenty minute drive.
The interior is well fitted with three beautiful marble bathrooms attached to each bedroom. The kitchen has a gas electric cooker and there is a large fridge and freezer. Cutlery etc is prepared for seating up to eight persons.
Casa Virginia has its own private vineyard and makes its own wine. Although a part of a large farmstead Casa Virginia has its own garden that is secluded and not seen by other residents. It is also farthest from the swimming pool and tennis court and not disturbed by noise, all in all a lovely family house as used for the last 29 years by the family. You will not be disappointed!

Yes you must have a car and be prepared to drive along unmade roads. We have a good WiFi. We offer a 15% discount on rental rates for booking of two weeks or more

On arrival the house is prepared cleaned and beds made. Towels provided Now with Covid there are bottles of hand cleanser as well. The kitchen has easy access from BBQ outside or the dinning table so service is a pleasure!

Perfectly Tuscan
This was an excellent rental and one of our best stays ever of the 30 years we have been coming to Castellina. The house was typically rustic Tuscan but very well supplied with everything we might need, including good Internet access, excellent bathrooms, an impressive separate sitting room with our own patio and small garden with the most exceptional views over the surrounding Tuscan countryside we quite possibly have ever seen. There were communal gardens and huge, modern pool, both exceptionally well maintained. The owner, Ian, had been very helpful in advance of our stay, and the manager, Jacky, arranged early access for us as the house had been vacated the day before our arrival. We really appreciated this and she ensured we had a great stay throughout. Probably most importantly of all, she arranged for a local chef, Serena, to provide us with dinner on our first night. We had no idea what time Serena was due to arrive nor how much she would cost nor what she would cook (she was warned in advance about food intolerances). We would come back here just to have Serena cook for us again. She was charming and produced waves of the most outstanding food we have ever had in Italy whilst we sat on the terrace drinking Prosecco. The fruit and vege were all her own and astonishingly, she was about half the cost of an average meal out. We would have paid twice that or more and she came back three days later to cook for us again. If we came back, we'd book Serena every night!

Second excellent visit to Le Bagnaie.
Thank you Jacky, Ian and Serena for enabling us to have a wonderful stay. Pool provided welcome relief from heat. Serena provided two wonderful meals. If you want to be away from the tourist bustle this is ideal.

Wonderful stay at Le Bagnaie, Castellina in Chianti
With all the recent uncertainty about travel, we feel priviledged to have made it to Ian's property for a 2 week stay. Amazing views from the large, private garden, the property has loads of character and has obviously been a well-loved family getaway. Our children loved the large solar-heated pool with diving board which never felt crowded and we met some very friendly guests of various nationalities from the other properties, both owners and fellow lets. We often had the whole pool area to ourselves but this may be because this is not a normal year. Our host and the complex manager, Jacky, were so informative and kept in touch throughout. The directions from Pisa airport to the property were spot on which was useful as it was dark before we even left Pisa in our Fiat 500 L hire car (a good choice and spacious) and our satnav didn't cope at times.Have faith towards the end of the journey, the last 6-7 minutes is a pretty rough track (not a word to the car hire people)! The many surrounding world-famous and beautiful sights are easily accessible by car or train. You definitely need a car to get around, including to supermarkets (large ones in Poggibonsi and closer, very adequate ones in Castellina in Scala or Staggia). Word of warning about mosquitoes which seem to be a problem throughout Tuscany; it's worth bringing repellent with you. We'd highly recommend the services of Serena, who came to cook for us on a couple of occasions, arranged for us by Jacky - delicious food! All in all, we've had a great time and would totally recommend. Two weeks flew by and we could have done with a few more. Thanks to all who looked after us.

A Little Gem...
Not long back from a 2 week stay in this authentic Tuscan property. The spot is absolutely stunning with unending views of the surrounding Tuscan countryside and vineyards. The highlight of every evening were our beautiful sunsets which did not disappoint! The property benefits from a private garden , with use of a lovely communal pool (also surrounded by stunning views and well maintained grounds) and an excellent tennis court. We stayed in late August and although most of the neighbouring properties were occupied, it still was not busy at the poolside. It is a truly relaxing place and would recommend if you want to get away from the 'daily grind'! Jacky the manager was just lovely, always contactable for any issues and was full of local knowledge with excellent recommendations for places to eat and visit etc. The house itself is largely on one level with a few steps around the place, but no significant stairs. In my opinion, it has loads of character and a homely feel, with en suite bathrooms off all 3 bedrooms which were great for the kids. The property is well situated to visit a host of beautiful towns, villages and attractions just a short drive away, and all the amenities you need to manage your self catering. (You will need a car to stay at this place, but the views when you get there are well worth the journey!) I would also recommend booking 'Serena' to come and cook for you at least once during your stay (This woman is an AMAZING cook and a thoroughly lovely lady who let my kids help cook traditional Italian food with her!) This is the first time we have experienced a family holiday in Tuscany - it did not disappoint and we will most definitely be returning at some point soon!

As an English family we wanted sunshine! So in 1986 as luck would have it we saw and bought a large undeveloped hill farmstead just outside Seina and developed the site with six others ourselves. This we have used for last thirtythree years as our Italian family home. Recently my wife died and we are renting it now as the younger family are growing up with grandchildren who love it, but don't visit it so often. The pools (2) and the tennis court are loved and great fun for everybody. For car buffs the Mille Miglia replica route passes within 1 km and also stops for refreshments about 20km away so a grand day out can be had seeing some of the finest old cars in the world. The rally is held every year in mid May, a glorious time to visit Italy. But its a glorious place all the time!

Why they chose this property

When purchased it was a wonderful opportunity to develop a house to our own design and use the local artisan workers who make such beautiful things. The wooden bedroom ceilings are wonderful and the handmade metal work fire tongs etc and lampholders were made to order in Pienza. Workmanship worth studying!

What makes this property unique

The house is made for easy living. It is all on one floor with few internal steps (3) and no stairs. So no climbing up to bedrooms. Two of the bedrooms open directly to the garden, (secured locks) a lovely place to draw up a chair and settle down with good book, a drink to hand and watch the glorious sunset as the sun sets over the horizon forty miles away. We have out own vineyard, small but producing 60 to 80 high quality (truly organic!) Chianti from the four classic grape varieties we grow. Tasters are on offer!
