About the property

3 bedroom, 3 bathroom, private pool, large garden, internet, short walk to beach

An established, spacious, nicely furnished villa that sleeps 6-8 people. The villa has its own private, secluded swimming pool (8 X 4 metres) which is open all year. A sunbathing area around the pool that has the sun all day. There is a courtyard area with BBQ and seating under a wooden gazebo, a lovely place to enjoy your lunch or for evening entertaining.

We have just built a new terrazzo at the back to sit under during the midday sun or better still at night to enjoy. The front veranda is a quiet place to sit and watch the sun go down. We are not one of the townhouses, so you will enjoy your own privacy and peace!

The villa is a 10 min stroll to the beach, local shops, tapas bars and restaurants. Prices reflect local the Spanish population and expect to pay 1.20 euro for a glass of wine.

El Portil is on the Costa de la Luz in the region of Huelva. It is also known as the Spanish Algarve. It is an area with stunningly clean, golden beaches, backed with pine trees and faces the Atlantic. Golf courses nearby include Neuvo Portil, El Rompido (Daily Mail has an international finals played there each year!), Islantilla and Bellavista golf club (see golf details).

Airports: Faro airport (Portugal): 1 hour drive on a good, almost empty motorway. Faro is served by main airline carriers. Taxi 100 euro or there is a coach service.

Seville airport: Just over 1 hour drive on a motorway, the road is busier, as driving around the city. It is possible to get a train or bus from Seville to Huelva.

Jerez airport: 1and 1/2 hour drive, eg Ryan Air

An airport pick up from Seville or Faro would be about 120 Euros. Please enquire for a taxi firm.

Lisbon airport (Portugal): 4 hour drive.

Malaga airport: 3 and 1/2 hour

Car hire is recommended and can be arranged through a variety of companies. There is no problem hiring a car in Portugal and driving over into Spain. Some companies may charge a supplement. There is no border crossing. We recommend

you book car hire in advance, particularly for July and August.

Please contact us for further info.

Surrounding area and things to do: Within walking distance: Stunning walks along the beach where you can stop, have a drink and watch the sun go down, children play areas also; The El Portil Lagoon, a wildlife and nature reserve with walkway and viewpoints around it.

5 minute drive: El Rompido a pretty fishing village and Punta Umbria a lively town both have great fish restaurants.

25 minute drive: Portugal and the attractive border towns of Ayamonte and Villa Real; Visit the monastery and museum at La Rabida to see where the Christopher Columbus set sail.

I hour drive: Seville with its extraordinary charm, history and artistic richness (regular train and bus service from Huelva); The hills of Sierra de Aracena, villages like Jabugo famous for its ham;; El Rocio, a religious village with a surreal western feel, as the village streets are sanded and its residents use horseback for transportation. The El Rocío pilgrimage is the most famous in the region, attracting nearly a million people from across Andalucia and the entire country, and beyond. This is around the end of May each year. It is also the gateway to The Donana National Park, Spain's largest wildlife reserve, world class wetland site for migrating birds. The Rio Tinto mines about 45 min drive.

There is a sports arena on our road with tennis, football pitches and basketball, and a pay daily gym. You can hire bikes and there are many cycle paths along the beach.

There is a go karting track and waterpark just outside el rompido. Also horse riding centres.

Golf: The villa is next to Nuevo Portil Golf Course so just a few minutes drive to the entrance (a bit far to walk to clubhouse!). Interesting course interwoven through villas & houses. Variety of holes long par 5's, short par 3's some hitting towards the sea..

5 minute drive - El Rompido, a stunning 36 hole course with magnificent views over the Atlantic (It is the venue for the Mail on Sunday classic finals) Some have described some 'impossible holes'. Course guide recommended and lots of balls!

Nearby 15 minutes is Bellavista GC, which is a parkland course and La Moncilla( designed by José María Olazábal) a spectacular new course, well worth a visit.

30 minute drive - Islantilla GC which is a well established course with an excellent reputation for its 27 hole course, and Costa Esuri near the border.

In Portugal - Castro Marim GC a stunning course with great views just over the border, it's a must play course.

Mr & Mrs Smith purchased this villa in 2003

Why Mr & Mrs Smith chose El Portil

We wanted somewhere close to an airport and a short walk to the beach. We had visited various areas in Spain but when we came across this area we knew this was the place. It is different from the other Costas, and you soon realise why the Spanish visit and holiday here, as it is beautiful! The price of food and drink has not increased in years! and neither are they inflated for tourists. We wanted a house that had a private swimming pool and had a large outside space. We looked at the town houses but preferred a private villa to the townhouses as they can be very noisy in the summer and little private outdoor space, they also have a number of restrictions. Our house offers great privacy and space to enjoy the sunshine.

What makes this villa unique

The spacious private garden and your own private swimming pool.

Quiet and safe and a short walk to the beach. The real Spanish feel to the area.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We loved your house especially the garden and the pool, amazing that the grass is so green in such temperatures. I would highly recommend it to my friends,

Wonderful 2 weeks in the sunshine

  • 4 of 5

This is a well appointed villa in a residential area in the quiet town of el portil, out of season there are few restaurants and bars open our second week saw more open with Easter arriving, for more and some nice shops try el rompido. We visited huelva and Seville during our stay, we parked at los arcos centro commercial for Seville and got a taxi into the centre and the hop on hop off bus. Also stopped in pretty tavira enroute to faro airport. The outside space at the villa is well appointed and the new terrace and furniture are lovely. The beds are comfy and hot water is plentiful, our weather was excellent only a half day of cloud in two week and up to 28 degrees some days. There are no fry ups, few English speakers and no all night discos here but you have friendly happy people who when your Spanish fails you do their very best to help. The BBQ at the villa was a great asset and there are several large supermarkets within a 15 minute drive. To make the most of the holiday I'd say car hire is a must. Catherine is incredibly helpful throughout the booking process and afterwards and makes this a hassle free holiday. The only tiny negative is the locals dogs barking at odd times of day and night but a small price to pay for what was a most enjoyable stay.

Ideal for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

This villa was perfect for a three-generation family of five, although obviously - with a toddler - there was plenty of patrolling round the pool! It was very spacious and clean, with all the amenities needed. Catherine was very helpful in providing information, including clear directions, and providing us with a cot. As it was late in the season, and quite a few restaurants were closed, we mainly bought food locally and cooked at the house, including a couple of barbecues. We found it a delightful place to enjoy the sunset and evening warmth. The enormous supermarket about 15 minutes away is quite an experience too. The nearby beaches are fabulous, with very calm seas, and we enjoyed trips into Huelva and also to see the reconstructions of Columbus's ships. I would definitely recommend this property.

Excellent facilities and location

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday at this villa with our two teenage daughters. The villa provided excellent facilities and the pool was very well maintained and kept beautifully clean.

The shops, beach and restaurants are only a walk away and it was refreshing to find that El Portil was a typical Spanish seaside town and not over run by tourists. There was a market on Saturday and Wednesday in the town which is a noisy affair!

A must is the paddle surfing at El Rompido, go-karting and the waterpark at Cartaya which are all a short drive away. Apparently there is also a segway track at El Rompido behind one of the supermarkets but we didn't get a chance to try that out. Huelva and Seville are also worth a visit.

This was our first time to Spain and Villa Christina made it an amazing experience! Many thanks Catherine

SUNDAY TIMES REVIEW 21/01/2018 Chris Haslam

A pilgrimage to Huelva’s heartland

Sometimes rustic, sometimes raucous, always real: in this forgotten corner of Spain, they still do things the old way.

To be frank, the tiny Huelva village of Linares de la Sierra, population 300, probably wasn’t ready for haute cuisine, but gastronauts Luismi Lopez and Adela Ortiz weren’t put off. Their restaurant, Arrieros, used to be the village bar, and when they opened, the locals thought nothing would change. “Problem was,” Adela sighed, “that they weren’t used to seeing tourists, so over here...” she swept her hand around the restaurant, “...we had glamorous guests in pretty dresses and high heels, and over there by the bar, we had five old men sitting with their tongues hanging out. I had to have words.”

No one in Linares thought Arrieros would last. The village is 90 minutes from Seville, deep in the Sierra de Aracena Natural Park, in the far western province of Huelva. It lies in the dehesa, a rolling landscape of steep hills and deep valleys cloaked in nearly 5,000 square miles of evergreen oak. The meadows hidden beneath the trees are home to Iberian pigs: the huge, semi-feral porkers that roam the woodlands in gangs, snuffling up acorns, sprawling in the sun and splashing around in the streams before ending up as the finest jamon in the world.

The families who raise the pigs live a life unchanged for centuries. They prune the trees, repair the walls and go to church on Sundays. In the summer they join a pilgrimage, and in autumn they collect mushrooms and chestnuts from secret locations passed down by their grandmothers. In winter, they turn the pigs into jamon, paleta, chorizo and morcilla. They make their own wine, cure their ailments with wild herbs and park their horses outside bars where a tourist was once as rare as a co-operative donkey.

But not anymore. When la crisis hit in 2008, the sudden absence of cash for foreign travel forced the Spanish to search for holidays at home. Straitened times also awakened a nostalgic yearning for simple pleasures — vermut on a Sunday, grandma’s home cooking, the rhythmic predictability of rural life — and what the Spanish refer to as la esencia, or essence, of Spain. All of the above were thriving in Huelva, in its sylvan hinterland, in its passionate Catholicism and in the raucous chiringuitos of its wild Atlantic coast.

The pilgrimage site of Peña de Arias Montano, Alajar

There are 375 miles of ancient footpaths in the Sierra de Aracena, former smuggling routes named after the mochileros — or bagm
