Beautiful Secluded Cottage Beside Our Old Olive Farm With Use Of Big Pool & More

Overview

Property

Updated: 03-Oct-2016
6 bed rural retreat, fantastic mountain views, Spains largest river and beaches

The perfect place for a peaceful holiday away from the busy costas but within easy reach of lovely beaches. Our light and airy cottage has an open plan living space with a kitchen area, dining table and chairs and a sofa bed. The double bedroom with luxury mattresses and pillows for a great night's sleep, opens out onto a tranquil, flower filled, traditional courtyard and you can lie in bed and gaze at the pool and views beyond. There is another bedroom with twin beds, (new, luxury mattresses) which can be pushed together into a double. The large, sparkly blue and white bathroom has loo, basin and shower. Outside you have a private and very pretty BBQ and eating area and endless space to roam throughout the many acres of garden. This is such a special place, not only in the summer, but spring offers fantastic walking and wild flowers and autumn wild mushrooms, cycling, fishing (yes, the mighty river Ebro is 5 mins up the road) sightseeing and of course relaxing. Eat fabulous local food and enjoy fresh eggs from the caretaker's chickens and just lie beside the stunning swimming pool (May-Nov) with a good book (may 1st-end sept and you may be sharing with family in the main house). There is a shared games room with pool table for your further amusement. You won't want to leave but if you do there is plenty to do!

As most of you will arrive on Saturday we are very happy to do a shop for you if you want to - just send us a list.

After renovations and up-grades throughout, we are renting our own house next door for some weeks of the year. If you wish to rent the 2 together (or just want a nose at some more photos) please see Casa Pio, property number 453567. Please bear in mind that the pool and games room may be shared with other paying guests or family sometimes.

A little further up the mountain track (5 minutes drive) is a yoga retreat, and if you wish to start your day at this fantastic place our guests are welcome to join in the morning yoga sessions. Massage is also offered at this relaxing oasis.

I cannot stress how lovely this area is in the spring and the autumn........warm, blue skies perfect for walking and exploring the surroundings. In April and may it is green and beautiful with abundant wildflowers, birds, wild asparagus and the beaches are empty. In September, October and often into November we have a second spring where the green returns and everything comes back to life after the intense summer heat. The end of October brings with it cool misty mornings (great for the wild fungi) mostly giving way to warm sunny days. Of course without rain none of this could be and I would be lying if I said there was no rain, but invariably it doesn’t last long and blue skies are never far away. There is a wood burning stove to keep you toasty and warm if the evenings are cooler.

Our lovely swimming pool is unheated and therefore only suitable for use between 1st May and the end of September.

About the Owner

About Sue and David Barnes

Sue and David live near Windsor in the UK and bought this lovely house in October 2013 as a place to retreat to from their hectic work life.

They both own and run a successful flower business, which creates wonderful displays for parties and weddings in London and the SE of England.

It’s a hectic business, probably the only business of its type in England! It is demanding creatively and logistically, but hugely rewarding as most of the 1000+ parties they decorate each year are held in some of the most well known buildings in the country. Plus Sue look after 100-150 Brides on their wedding days- quite a responsibility!

Finding a bolt hole away from it all, so they could recharge our batteries, seemed like an attractive proposition!

Perfect family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had the most amazing week. The house and gardens are so beautiful and the location is breathtaking.

We took our 18 month old girl away for her first holiday abroad and he absolutely loved it too! The pool, swing and huge gardens were perfect for her to explore.

The location of the house is ideal - secluded so that you have complete peace but only 15 min drive to multiple beaches and beautiful little towns.

David and Sue happened to be at the main house while we were there and they made our stay even more perfect. They gave us lots of advice and we shared a few drinks with them in the garden one evening but at no point did we feel crowded.

I can't recommend the property enough, we are already looking at dates for the next time we can go!

Owner's Response: we loved having you there and watching you all relax more and more as the days went by. Loved hearing the burble of a little voice and watching Edie in the pool with the house martins dipping in and out as she swam (well, drowned in the right direction!) - heaven. Thank you for your kind words and come back and see us soon...a warm welcome awaits and so glad you had such a good time. I will always remember you saying "I didn't realise it was actually possible to relax on holiday with an eighteen month old baby" - just brilliant!

Perfect holiday cottage in a stunning location

  • 5 of 5

We have just spent a week in the lovely little holiday cottage Casita Pio. The location is stunning with views of the nearby mountains and excellent walks straight from the backdoor.

The cottage is well equipped, spotless and comfortable. It is a really peaceful place where you can get away from it all and relax.

Sue & David were always helpful with information before we left and the local caretaker Paul was just as friendly & helpful.

We love this area, particularly exploring in the mountains & hills and would definitely recommend a stay here.

A perfect place to unwind amid wonderful views

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with our family, some of us in the main house (Casa Pio) and the rest of us in Casita Pio. Our bedroom was charming with a view out to the pool and mountains. The kitchen and bathroom were very clean and well equipped and we spent a lot of time in the beautiful courtyard, reading or simply enjoying the wonderful views. The Casita has its own barbecue for balmy evenings and the pool is large and immaculately kept. We saw an eagle flying over the valley one morning and visited the vibrant market in the nearby town. The beaches are a joy, well kept, with stretches of golden sand and I would certainly recommend Casita Pio to anyone who wants a relaxing holiday with stunning surroundings.

Beautiful Place, Great family holiday

  • 5 of 5

This was a great find. We (two adults, a 14 and 12 year old), had a fantastic 2 week break here. The cottage is set in a stunning location, attached via a games room to the main house. The pool is gorgeous and we spent several days just relaxing here, but there is also so much more to do within a 10 to 45 min drive. Perello is a lovely small town with cafes, shops and a Saturday market. There are plenty of small coves about 15 mins away. We likes Cap Roig for soft sand, a beach cafe and the pedalos with slides. Also Cala Forn was great for snorkelling with plenty of fishes to see. We also visited the castle at Miravet and had a couple of trips into Tortosa and the beautiful city of Taragona with an amphitheatre, a Cathedral and a lovely square for sitting and having tapas. We were lucky enough to be in Rasquera for the annual fire festival - spectacular and a little crazy!

The casita is run on solar power so be prepared to live the simpler life - no iron, hairdryer, microwave or TV, but plenty of character. Whilst we were there we shared the pool with the owners who could not have been more welcoming and gave us plenty of tips for things to do as well as lending us books and snorkelling gear. All in all we came back refreshed having had a fabulous time.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay and we loved being with you too. So enjoyed seeing you all unwind in the early days, then to see you discover everything on offer nearby was a complete priveledge. Most of our guests do come back and I hope that you know that there will be a warm welcome awaiting you all if, and when you do! The Rasquera street parties are incredible and so glad you could 'dance with the devils' with us this year!

Truly stunning cottage and location

  • 5 of 5

This was a fantastic find - a really beautiful cottage with a private courtyard overlooking a large pool and gorgeous views. I went with my boyfriend and it was quiet and romantic with lots of places to explore, both by foot and car.

Going in January, we didn’t predict wonderful weather but it was sunny everyday and we even ended up on the beach having a sunbathe!

Great place, great local food and wine – the perfect get away!

First class relaxation in a stunning location

  • 5 of 5

Back in April I was in dire need of a quick and easy getaway after an intensive, super stressful few months of work.

Casita Pio popped up and appeared to tick the box. I got a super cheap flight and car rental deal with BA to Barcelona, packed my road bike, a suitcase and got there in no time at all. The casita was lovely and I immediately felt at home.

I spent the week cycling through the stunning terraced hills and exploring the local restaurants, villages, towns and castles in the car and was truly amazed at how speedily I was restored to a happy relaxed mood.

Casita Pio is a gem and I will definitely return to next time I need a break.

Thank you very much!

Location

From the Owner

Why we chose this spot When we were looking for a special place to call our own in Spain we saw many properties, one of which was Casa Pio. We fell instantly in love with it! It is such a special place. The previous owners, who must take the credit for so much of the house design, had done a brilliant job of rebuilding an almost derelict farmhouse. They poured their soul into it, and we are incredibly fortunate to now own it. We’ve given it a lick of paint, new beds, mattresses, and linen and added other personal comfort touches. We love the location, the land around the house and the house itself. Our neighbours are pretty wonderful too, and very helpful. This casita (cottage) is built facing south and is joined to the main house by a gorgeous courtyard and a single story games room, both of which are there for you too. You have your own driveway and entrance and you are completely separate, self contained and secluded from the main house. You look out onto woods and in the west there is a magnificent mountain range. There are some magical walks straight from the door around the hills which time forgot, where you can wonder why and who built the little, long disused terraces high up in the side of the hills. The peace and stillness is only broken by the occasional half-hearted barking of a dog or two as you walk past their properties. Drive inland for 5 minutes and you’ll arrive in our nearest village Rasquera, which overlooks the Ebro river- the longest river in Spain. It is stunning with huge catfish you can often see. Here you can go fishing or kayaking, and on the other bank perched on the side of a cliff, is a majestic ancient castle built by the Knights Templar in the 12th century. You can see for miles. The valley is one of the market gardens of Cataluña. Head the other way to the coast and the little beaches and coves around El Perello can be found only 20 minutes away. Some little beaches have friendly cafes- perfect after a hard day on the beach!

The coastline 20 mins drive from us has been happily missed by mass tourism. There are many small beaches and coves and it is easy to find a quite one even in the height of summer. The Ebro valley played an important role in the Spanish civil war and there are many castles, ruined villages and museums around to testify to its past.

Rasquera is a small agricultural village, old men chat in the shade of the trees in the square and horses and carts are still used. There are however, a range of shops to provide you with the basics if you don't want to venture out of this lovely valley. El Perello, 10 mins drive offers more shops and a lively Saturday market.

The Catalans love their fiesta and in the summer especially you are never far from one. The Oyster festival is in May at the nearby coast and catch Rasqueras in the first week in Aug when the village goes into party mode and firework wielding devils chase old and young through the streets and music goes on till early in the morning. That's not all- most months there is a fiesta!

Here you have it all mountains, river and sea!

Facilities

From the Owner

Your cottage sits quietly near a wide and well maintained track, which brings you only 300 meters from the nearest tarmac road. It’s within 8 hectares of our land, with olives, almonds, carobs and Mediterranean pines. The land is terraced in wide sweeps around a central baranc (valley cut in the ice-age) and there is masses to explore. This just simply is a very lovely place.
