This 'away from it all' typically French family-friendly country house is near all the best beaches and sights of the Vendee. The property has been tastefully decorated and furnished whilst retaining its turn of the century charm. It has a large 3/4 acre private garden trimmed with grapevines and rosebushes, a private 4 x 8 metre swimming pool with sunbathing and dining patio decking, sun loungers and beach chairs. An outdoor cast iron stone bread oven is a feature Bar-B-Que. A new kitchen and living/dining room with its feature fireplace are particularly pretty and an impressive beamed hallway and traditional-style staircase lead to the first floor. Picturesque Mareuil sur Lay with its river frontage is nearby and superb Vendeen beaches are a 30 minute drive. The tranquil lake at Chateau Guibert is a short cycle ride away. Golf, at a magnificent course, is just a 15 min. drive, whilst Tennis is a mere 1 km. away. Shops, bars and fabulous restaurants are all within easy drive.
Owners Comments:
'Superbly equipped, extensive accommodation, large gardens and fabulous pool. The best house we have stayed in France in over 25 years and we will revisit again next year'. Geoffrey S. Sept. 2011
'We had such a lovely week at this house and find it difficult to fault - well maybe the pictures don't do it justice! Anyway the property is basically the best we have stayed at whilst in France' - Claygate, Surrey, June 2011
'We absolutely loved staying at this house. We had three generations of family including an 11 week old baby and the home met all of our needs perfectly'. Vicky W, August 2011
'We had a great week, with La Vassaliere providing everything that we needed and more. The website doesn't convey how comfortable and spacious the house is'. Ciaran, July 2011

Ms. Anita Eyles purchased this house in 1995
It had always been our dream to own a holiday home on the West coast of France. After viewing 20 Vendeen properties in 5 days in the pouring rain in February, 1995, we fell in love with not only the house, but the little hamlet in La Vassaliere, Chateau Guibert, a 30 minute drive from the Atlantic Coast. We took possession 2 days after the birth of our first daughter, on the 5th June, 1995 and spent a wonderful summer here. We then had another daughter, in 1998. The girls are now 20 and 17 and have delightful memories of spending each summer at La Vassaliere with family and friends.
The house is situated in a magical little oasis of quiet, surrounded by vineyards and sunflower fields, but within a 10 minute drive to local shops, bars and restaurants. The 3/4 acre rear garden with 4m x 8m swimming pool and patio decking is totally private. It's a haven for privacy if all you want is sunbathing, reading, sleep or relaxation or, if you have a busy family who enjoy sports, the garden is big enough for 5 a-side football :) If you enjoy cycling or running, there are many cycling routes you can discover. Tennis is a 10 minute drive away and Golf, at the beautiful course, La Domangere is just a 20 minute drive.
Dear Anita,
Just a quick email to say we had a fantastic holiday in France.
The house was everything we wanted and more. The children went in the pool everyday as we had really good weather and we all enjoyed the tranquility of the area.
The Puy du Fou was brilliant and we were so glad that we took your advice to stay for two days. We also visited Futurescope, La Rochelle, the beautiful beaches in the area and even managed some wine tasting! However the days we spent relaxing at the house and the family time we spent together is what we will remember the most.
It is definitely an area we would love to visit again.
Many thanks again.
With all our best wishes
Karen x
This beautiful old property is well maintained, well furnished and fully equipped for a comfortable self catering holiday in beautiful surroundings.
It is perfect for an extended family stay or for two families to holiday together. Lots of space inside and out to ensure that you don't feel on top of each other!
The pool area and gardens are well maintained. With excellent weather we ate all meals outside ,making good use of the BBQ
The owners have ensured that all needs are catered for, with a very well equipped kitchen and entertainment for sunny days and the occasional rainy days.
A good patisserie is a short drive away for the daily bread and croissants and the nearby town has a good supermarket, restaurant and tennis courts for the more active
We would definitely recommend the house and area. it was so relaxing that there was very little push to leave the house and pool!
Delightful home in a beautiful area.
We had a great time and would certainly recommend it for a family.
Lovely house, everyone loved the pool and the barbecue - a bit far from the beach (45 mins by car) but fantastic for bodyboarding. Great markets to explore relatively nearby.
A wonderful relaxing time for three generations in the family.
Very spacious house in a perfect rural retreat. Quiet, tranquil and very peaceful in private surroundings.
Beautiful, well maintained gardens (including the few other properties in hamlet) and the house is exceptionally well equipped and perfect for self catering, but if you do want to eat out, you will need to travel a fair way for a decent choice of restaurants (La Roche sur Yon is very good).
We had excellent weather and made full use of the pool and BBQ - no problems with pool not being heated as weather so good.
Only negative is NO local amenities within cycling or walking distance, but as roads are quiet and easy to drive on, not a problem - a 7 min drive for local bread and cakes(?) or 12 mins to large supermarket.
Anita (the owner} was very helpful and co-operative, with quick response to any queries.
Places for a must do visit:
Puy du Fou - do both night show and daytime - stunning.
La Rochelle - cosmopolitan - loads of shops and eating places. Historic harbour.
Thank you Anita for a wonderful week
What more can we say, beautiful surroundings, fabulous house, pool and gardens. We were 2 families, 4 adults 6 children, that had everything we needed for a sublime stay. The problem's we had were the children treatening a mutiny on leaving day and wanting to stay "forever", and watch out for the local wine...it's very good!! Perfect holiday, we really didn't want to leave!!
Very charming french farmhouse. We (family of 4 with children aged 6 & 4) had a very enjoyable week here.
The house is charming, very quiet rural location with large rear garden for the kids to run around.
The pool is well set up but unheated (as it says on the particulars) and despite telling the kids otherwise, it was therefore inevitably quite cold at times !
Very clean with good beds. The information actually left in the house could do with updating as it is a bit unspecific to the area but as long as you do some research before you get there you will work it all out.
The boulangerie that the particulars refer to has closed so there is nowhere that you can easily cycle from the house to get bread etc, however there are nice country cycles from the house.
It took us 45mins+ each time we wanted to get to the beaches which is fine but you don't want to plan to do this every day. Once there, the beaches were fabulous.
Owners were very easy to deal with.
Chateau Guibert is 60 mins south of Nantes, 45 mins north of La Rochelle, 40 mins east of Les Sables D'Olonne. There is a superb choice of white sandy beaches (some with rockpools for children) backing onto wild dunes and cool pine forests. Les Sables D'Olonne is worth a visit with its 'Cote D'Azurish' facade, great beach, al fresco restaurants, shopping and fishing village. There is a small Zoo nearby, very popular with children. La Rochelle with its sailing port and Aquarium, stylish town centre and great cuisine is a popular destination. Over the bridge is Ile de Re, where cycling enthusiasts can encircle the perimeter of the island, stopping for lunch in St. Martin de Re, overlooking the picturesque harbour. The region offers a wealth of sightseeing attractions such as chateaux, museums, castles, vineyards, wine tasting tours, open-air markets, seaside resorts, botanical gardens, theme parks (Futuroscope in Poitiers, Le Puy de Fou). Golf, tennis, watersports are all close by.
Golf: Golf, at the magnificent 18-hole La Domangere Country Club in Nesmy is a mere 15 minute drive from the house. The French Open was played here in 1990. The course is very well maintained, with quite a bit of challenging water on the back 9! Rates are very reasonable and the owners are relaxed and welcome children/families to walk the course, or join you in your buggy! Lovely lunch offered al fresco outside the Clubhouse (19th hole).
