Robin Cottage, with garden

Formed from the lower storey of the original Mill building, Robin cottage is all on one level and has a small but private south-facing garden. Approached down a flight of old stone steps (alternative path avoids the steps), the front door leads into a small entrance hall, off which lie the main living area, bathroom and one of the bedrooms. The second bedroom has a separate entrance off the garden, a few paces from the main front door.

The spacious living area comprises a smart fitted kitchen, dining area and comfy seating with flat-screen TV. Tasteful lighting and flame-effect electric fire add atmosphere, and digital electric radiators provide warmth at the touch of a button. The master bedroom has a king-size bed; double in the annex. Both have bedside lighting and tables and ample drawer and hanging space. The separate bedroom has a great view straight out onto the pretty waterfalls backed by trees and shrubs on the far side of the beck.

About the property

Sunny Bank Mill Cottages

This 300 year-old traditional stone watermill has been cleverly converted into three individual and attractive cottage-style apartments. In an idyllic riverside setting beside tumbling Torver Beck, each of the three apartments (Dipper, Wren and Robin) are full of character and retain many original features such as exposed stone walls and beams, whilst ensuring comfort and warmth after the day's activities.

Plenty of off-road parking space in the enclosed car-park. A grassy lane alongside the beck leads to a large wooded field (sheep-free - a haven for dogs) and down to the secluded lakeshore.

If you love the tranquil beauty of the lakes, and find yourself drawn to the pretty becks and peaceful waterfronts, this is the perfect holiday destination for you.

Situated on the quiet western shore of Coniston Water, not far from Peel Island ('Wildcat Island' of Swallows and Amazons fame), and surrounded by beautiful countryside, Sunny Bank Mill boasts private lake frontage and has its own jetty where you can launch your own boat or just sit and enjoy the scenery.

The three cosy apartments (Dipper, Robin and Wren) sleep 4, 4 and 2 respectively. Thick stone walls and individual layouts give each its own quirky character. Furnished to a high standard they are equipped with everything you will need to enjoy your holiday.

Whether you like to sit and admire stunning views, or would rather get out and explore by foot, bicycle, sail or paddle, these cottages make an ideal holiday base for a family, or a romantic getaway for 2, any time of the year.

The stroll down the lane beside the beck and then through the field down to the lake-shore takes only a few minutes and you will be rewarded with fine views across the lake. Watch out for the ducks, the resident dipper and the occasional heron fishing in the river. You might even spot an otter (we saw one last year). There's plenty of space in the field to let dogs off the lead. Hire one of our Canadian canoes and have hours of fun exploring the lake and the island (Wild Cat island of 'Swallows and Amazons' fame) and enjoy amazing views of Coniston Old Man and the central fells from the middle of the lake.

Cosy, wonderful location and all you need!

  • 5 of 5

Robin is a wonderful cosy cottage, a minutes walk from the shores of the iconic Coniston Water. It’s easy to reach a lot of fantastic walks and other lakes and tarns from here. The cottage is more than well equipped for 2 people, comfy sofas, king sized bed, bath/shower and a little garden. The kitchen has everything you would expect, and more!

An amazing reconfiguration of one building into three lets that are private and self contained!

  • 4 of 5

Our property was extremely well equipped and fulfilled our every need. Somehow it seemed spacious whilst and airy yet also warm and snug. Really good design and quality made if fully adequate and easy to manage at the same time. We did not require the second bedroom which would suit younger couples rather than older ones which tend to require easy access and certainly to facilities throughout the night and even the few level steps

from one building to the other on a rainy night made us choose the one room over the other , which was a shame because the other bedroom was beautiful with a super view!

Our two dogs loved it as did we and the area never fails to inspire us.

We consider this a really lovely peaceful place to stay and the wonderful wild snowdrops, and snow covered fells coupled with brilliant heating and hot water fantastic even in February weather that supplied most things!!

Sunny Bank lies at the heart of England’s beautiful Lake District National Park. Here one can enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the countryside so beloved by Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter, Arthur Ransome (to name but a few) and yet be within easy reach of charming villages and towns with all the attractions they have to offer. 4 miles from Coniston, a small but busy typical Lakeland town, and just three-quarters of a mile from Torver, where there is an excellent pub. Popular tourist centres such as Ambleside, Grasmere and Hawkshead are about half an hour away by car. Sunny Bank is an ideal location for mountain walking, boating, swimming, sailing and other water-based activities. Bring your own boat or hire our canadian canoes.
