About the property

Domaine du Renne

Domaine du Renne boasts two holiday cottages / Gites in a peaceful setting with unspoilt southerly views across endless vineyards. The property set on the side of a gentle hill surrounded by its own woodland that offers remarkable walking . There is a two bedroom and a one bedroom Gite (see the associated adverts for availability) Both are beside the 12x6M pool

The Domaine is totally private at the end of a chemin, with a farm as one neighbour and a small wine producer the other! It is therefore a place to relax and soak up the sun beside the pool!

Both gites have a south facing terrace with individual gas barbecues. Most visitors in the summer use the terraces as the main accomodation, lazing in the evening sun with a bottle of delightful local wine, into the late hours!

There are paths all through the 22hA of woodland where you can walk and study nature, or if you want more sunshine, just walk around the surrounding vineyards where you will be greeted by a waive from those tending their vines. There is no fear of not finding your way back, as in all likliehood you will be accompanied by our two resident English Bull Terriers who know the area backwards - be careful though, like a rogue taxi-driver, they will try to bring you the long way back if they feel you have not seen enough..!

The priority at Domaine du Renne are the guests. We aim to allow you to have a carefree holiday where there are no rules or restrictions! Obviously there are guides regarding safe pool use and respect for the property, but we want visitors to be free to come and go as they please and importantly, provide as much as possible for an easy life! Airlines now are increasingly raising their charges on baggage to the point that anything other than hand luggage is a burden. The trouble with this is that on self catering holidays, there are the problems of either bringing the basics, or buying them on arrival and having to leave anything unused behind. We recognise this and will supply anything that a guest might reasonable want. We supply all towels, pool towels, soaps, washing liquids, paper products, candles and tealights - our motto is travel light with just your personal toiletries and clothes - not many are needed as the washing machine is available all the time and clothes dry in no time at all ! In fact, all you need to worry about is your food and drink!

What you pack will depend on the time of year and what you want to do. Bistros in Limoux are pretty informal, but do not expect discerning service if you are in ragged jeans or shirt! Informal is the code, and for visiting the one or two places, smart informal is all that is asked. If you go further afield to some of the Michelin restaurants, local diners will be in informal summer suits. Sticking close to home though, very informal! We do ask though that other guests are respected. If you intend to have a day lazily canoeing down the River Aude, then you are asked to have a pair of suitable shoes - flip-flops are not accepted, they must be footwear that can be fastened, such as trainers.

Sometimes there can be high variations in day/night temperatures, especially in Spring and Autumn. It is advised that a light sweater is included in your clothes list.

The pool is for use of those staying in the gites. There are some basic dos and don'ts as you will appreciate. The only social request is that other guests are respected and therefore we ask that appropriate swimming costumes at least are always worn around the pool.

The gites are of a high standard where visitor comfort is paramount. They are thoroughly cleaned before each new visit and weekly cleaning is included during long stays - if required. Sheets and towels are replaced each week, and on request in between. If anything that a visitor requires of a reasonable nature, is not already included, then we will supply on request.

About Hal Adams

The property was purchased nearly three years ago and totally renovated during this time by Louise and Hal Adams. Louise commutes and works in London whilst Hal lives on the property full time having decided to leave his sales engineering work behind him. Of course the real owners of the property are our two English Bull Terriers who have adapted to French life very quickly - helped of course by 20hA of grounds to run around and a steady supply of new friends in the gites during summer helps!

Hal Adams purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Hal Adams chose Limoux area

Domaine du Renne is one of the few unique locations in France, where it is peaceful sun trap, sheltered from wind, yet only a few minutes drive from Limoux, a thriving town boasting 30 restaurants, five supermarkets and a picture postcard 'place de ville'. The region is very quiet and a powerhouse for wine. Domaine du Renne is surrounded by vineyards and 'producteurs de vin' being in the heart of Vin d'Oc region.

The property is mainly woodland with the main house and Gites separated by a driveway. The accommodation is relatively new - 1970, all decorated and maintained to a high exacting standard. There are two swimming pools on the property, one of them for exclusive use by the Gites. It is a truly wonderful place.

What makes this cottage unique

The peace and quiet is by far the most beneficial advantage. It is so easy to wake up late to the sound of the neighbouring farm lazily taking the tractor out to tend the vineyards - great for a holiday, but maybe not when there are jobs to be done!

Although we have 50 acres of woodland to walk around, there is not really a sense of privacy here, one just walks from one vineyard to another with the owners giving you a friendly wave.

A short drive and you are in Limoux where it is not uncommon to buy an acceptable lunch for 10€ ! Then, how nice it is to be home in a few minutes after all this and laze in the pool with the sun beating overhead!

Pretty perfect!

From the photos I was a bit worried that the location might be a bit bit bland, but this is a really lovely gite! The pool is a great size and looks over endless vineyards towards the mountains, as do the dining areas. The gites are fully equipped to a high standard - there wan't anything I would have liked that wasn't supplied (a first!!) - perhaps aircon, although there is a good fan. I was particularly impressed with freshly laundered covers given for the sofa, chair and (joy of joys) the padded sunloungers.

Hal is a generous host, so there is a supply of olive oil, salt & pepper, tea, coffee and things like kitchen towel, cling film, dishwasher and washing powders - all the useful things you don't want to have to think about.

The nearby town of Limoux is just lovely - a convivial square with reasonable restaurants and a gorgeous river to walk along. The surrounding countryside is beautiful, with some good walks, and I believe there are lots of interesting things to do locally, but I'm afraid we just enjoyed lazing about, reading, swimming and eating well.

The gites are ideally situated for visiting Carcassone, which was better than we had anticipated from some scathing reviews (Disneyfied features a lot). Yes, it's like walking onto a Harry Potter set, but it's alive and interesting, and surprisingly, the restaurants are not unreasonable, with live music in the squares etc. We went late afternoon, making parking and walking easier.

We will definitely want to return and will recommend it to anyone who will listen!!
