Overview

About the property

A Chance To Stay Somewhere Different! Sleeps 4,1 Double + 2 Bunks , Stove.

Come and get away from it all in this lovely shepherd's hut - (he's called Tom Putt's) In a quiet spot on an old Devon hilltop Farm with far reaching views and the occasional sheep! There is the Shepherd's cottage (prop number 1046935/E6907 4 beds) near by (but very separate) which you can also rent . Tom Putt sleeps 4 (one double bed and 2 bunks). He has a small wood stove , a sink and a cooker and a surprising amount of storage space.

Right outside your door are 10 acres of fields and trees to roam amongst. The hut certainly is away from it all which means its quiet but equally you can make as much noise as you like!

30 paces away is a spacious shower and loo in an old barn, 30 paces in the opposite direction is where you park your car, it's safe and off road, just next to the tennis court which you have free use of.

Provisions can be bought in the charming market town of Torrington (3miles). It has real bakers (with possibly the best home baked chelsea buns in the world),grocers, butchers as well as some lovely pubs selling real Devon Ale .There is also a small but trendy cinema and arts centre (The Plough) which has regular live music, comedy and theatre.

Close to the Atlantic coast (5miles) yet away from the traffic , staying in Tom Putt's means you get the best of both worlds. There are miles of fabulous sandy beaches nearby Instow, Westward Ho! Saunton Sands, Croyde to name a few. There is great surf for the pros (and kite surfing should you wish) as well as tuition for those that wish to learn but you may just like to roll your trouser legs up and paddle!

The Shepherd's hut lies In the heart of Devon countryside between Exmoor and Dartmoor National Parks , away from the tourists yet close enough to beaches as well as miles of free National Trust coastline ( great walking and stunning views!).

Popular nearby attractions include the magnificent R.H.S. Rosemoor Gardens (3 miles), Dartington Crystal Glass Factory (2 miles), the Barnstaple and Bideford Pannier market ( food and antiques), Torrington 1646 (civil war re-enactments) and for the more active the Tarka Trail cycle route (30 miles of scenic cycle path, bikes can be hired nearby), North Devon Surf School, kite surfing, sailing, golf (9 beautiful courses), PGL and Skern Lodge out door adventure centres, quad biking, paint ball survival, fishing (freshwater and sea), climbing wall, the Milk way indoor children's adventure centre , The Big Sheep farm experience for kids and grown-ups!

There is plenty of outdoor and indoor entertainment to suit all age groups and all weather and a lot of it is free!

About Jim Bremner

We came to live in Devon in 1994. We had lived in London and wanted to find somewhere quieter to bring up our children! There are 4 of us in the nearby farm house: Jenny, Alastair, Cathy and Jim. We all play musical instruments and must nearly have a full orchestra between us. So don't be surprised if you hear the distant sound of a flute or a cello on occasion. Jim has been known to give the odd drum lesson if he's around ( if he's in the mood!).

Alastair likes to paint and is into woodwork in a big way. Cathy is the linguist amongst us, having studied French, Spanish and Portuguese. Jenny is general household dog's body although the others wouldn't agree but then they haven't read this !

Jim Bremner purchased this cabin in 1994

Why Jim Bremner chose North Devon

We wanted to live in an old farm house away from it all.North Devon is perfect. It's not really been fully discovered by people yet. We have miles of coastal pathways,we are between Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks, there are National Trust properties, Rosemoor Royal horticultural Garden (3 miles), beaches galore (close enough for an after work dip!), Tarka trail bike track, our own Theatre and Arts Centre (The Plough). There are loads of things for kids to do indoor and outdoor whatever the weather (horse riding, fishing, surfing, golf, kite surfing, go carting , quad biking, horrible paint ball games, farm animal parks ,water parks , mountain wall climbing). Oh and there are lovely pubs selling lovely beer!

What makes this cabin unique

We fell in love with the farm, partly because of it's hilltop location but also because of the romance of it's old buildings. When we first arrived we uncovered the original old cooking pot which was used to cook over the open fires!

Let life stand still for a moment.

An amazing escape in the country!

  • 5 of 5

If you love the peace and tranquility of the great outdoors then this is for you!

Set within beautiful North Devons countryside, this shepherds hut is a perfect getaway from the treadmill of life!

It encompasses all that is fab about country living - al fresco cooking and dining, fresh air and surrounded by nature.

The set up is perfect - everything you need to be independent but with the knowledge that Jenny and Alistaire are a stones throw away should you need them.

The facilities suit the experience - fire pit, tennis, ping pong, walks and beautiful Devon to explore on your bikes, with many cream tea stops not too far away!

You will leave feeling recharged and wanting to retire now for more of the same!

Such a relaxing family break

  • 5 of 5

This Shepherd's Hut is perfect. It has a double bed and bunk beds so enough sleeping space for a family of four. There is plenty of storage too. The Hut was really well equipped. Showers/toilets extremely close by and were spotless. Water was lovely and hot!

We loved playing ping pong and cooking on the fire pit. Next time we come we'll make sure we have a game of tennis too!

The location is perfect - so tranquil. So lovely to hear nothing but the bleating of lambs/sheep and the birds singing!

We had such a lovely couple of days here - such a great place to escape the TV, PS4 and emails!!

We will definitely come back for another stay.

Fantastic setting with wonderful hosts

  • 5 of 5

Booked this for some getaway time and to celebrate my partners 50th birthday. We had the most relaxing of times and the hosts Jenny and Jim could not be more helpful. The setting is idyllic and so so peaceful. Although we planned most evenings to go to a local pub we ended up staying on site as we just struggled to draw ourselves away. When it was time to leave Pippa our wee dog refused to get in the car! We know exactly how she felt! Fantastic!

Old fashioned family fun

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely LOVED our week in Tom Putt the shepherd's hut! It's not glamorous, but cosy and comfortable with everything we needed....and nothing we didn't. There are wonderful rain showers and clean WCs in the adjacent stable building, along with a fridge freezer and big washing-up sinks. Our two boys (13 and 11) and big lollopy dog had the run of the field, tennis court and huge enclosed meadow, and it was great to see them getting lots of fresh air. Without a TV or WiFi we were all able to completely disconnect from out hectic everyday lives and enjoy the peace and quiet. Even a trip to the loo in the small hours was no hardship when I looked up and saw more stars than I've ever seen before!

The fire pit was used every night - even in the rain - to cook dinners and chill out by.

The children really enjoyed their first ever surf lesson in Saunton, and we all went wild swimming in Lyn. Sitting on the quay in Appledore to eat our Fish and chips from Sylvester's was another highlight.

Overall, we had a fantastic week and will definitely return some day.......thank you for everything :-D
