About the property

Spacious cosy cottage, modern amenities, in beautiful valley on edge of Dartmoor

Combe Bridge Cottage is a sensational thatched cottage, built in the 17th and 18th centuries. With refurbished bathrooms, and large farmhouse kitchen, plus a stunning newly converted self-contained annexe, it now sleeps 11 in 6 bedrooms, plus cot for baby, with room for an extra 2 on a sofabed in the sitting room.

MAIN HOUSE: downstairs there is vast double sitting room with a baby grand piano (tuned twice yearly), and huge granite open fireplace; a snug for quiet reading/working; downstairs cloakroom; a comfortable kitchen with Aga and huge farmhouse table; an adjacent dining room for feasts; a back kitchen/laundry/scullery; and a bootroom with hooks and racks for outdoor clothing/footwear and a large American style fridge with ice maker. Upstairs there are 5 bedrooms, 2 ensuite, plus a third family bathroom. All the bathrooms have recently been upgraded, and the house enjoys full central heating, plus a wood burning stove in the dining room, and an open fire in the sitting room.

HAYLOFT: this annexe, ideal for grandparents; older children; nannies, or anyone who wants a quiet space away from the main house, has recently been converted into a truly stunning two person self contained living unit, with access from the main house. It features a fully equipped modern kitchen with dishwasher, oven, induction hob, and a pretty bistro table and chairs; a stunning galleried living space with TV, writer's desk/bookcase; and a gorgeous sleeping platform (the old Hayloft itself) with a king sized bed, 2 chests of drawers, and designer fabric furnishings. With underfloor heating throughout the ground floor, it also has a new woodburner heating the living space and the upstairs sleeping area.

Combe Bridge Cottage has a pretty orchard style garden to the rear, with a swing, and table and chairs for al fresco dining. There are also manicured lawns bordered by pretty cottage planting to the front, side and rear, and a terrace accessed directly from the farmhouse kitchen, with table, chairs and barbecue, to enjoy the sunshine. There is ample parking for 3 cars.

The cottage is just 10 minutes drive from the A38 and you can walk up to majestic Dartmoor straight out of the front door (the Two Moors Way passes close by). The south Devon coast is only a short drive. The nearest pub is just a 10 minute walk, nearest village shop a mile away, good supermarket and general provisions in Buckfastleigh (10 minute drive away), more ecelctic food and antique shopping in the nearby stannary town of Ashburton, with busier shops and restaurants in Totnes (a 20 minute drive away). It is a 15 minutes drive from the nationally acclaimed Field Kitchen restaurant, part of Riverford Farm, which also has a farm shop to die for.

Looking at the layout in more detail, in the main house downstairs there is a wonderful country kitchen with two oven electric Aga, plus conventional oven, dishwasher, sink and fridge, a large farmhouse table, and armchair; a "back kitchen" with induction hob, washing machine, microwave, double sink/drainer, second dishwasher, plus a separate boot room with American fridge freezer. Next to the kitchen is a beautiful dining room seating 12 for feasts (we have managed 18 before!), with a 17th century dining table and early 19th century rug from Afghanistan. Further on is a comfortable and spacious sitting room with huge granite inglenook fire place and a baby grand piano. At the back is a small snug, with WiFi and printer facilities (there are two additional portable WiFi boosters available to allow cover anywhere in the house). There are 3 staircases (one steep) from the ground floor leading to the pretty bedrooms above. The first leads to the master bedroom, which has en-suite bathroom with bath and shower (plus heated towel rail), arts and crafts wardrobe and dressing table, chest of drawers. A second staircase leads to a twin bedroom with an en-suite shower room, and pretty chest of drawers. The third leads to 3 bedrooms (one double bed, one single bed, and one single with pull out bed below, all with wardrobes and chests of drawers) which share a family bathroom with bath and shower over. All bathrooms have have been recently renovated. A travel cot is available and can be set up where needed.

We have recently fully converted the Hayloft, which is attached to and accessed from the main house, and has its own fully equipped kitchen, large living area with wood burning stove, beautiful custom designed desk/bookcase feature and staircase, and platform sleeping area. This is a truly stunning space, and provides the possibility both for self contained living quarters for grandparents, nannies, older children, relatives etc; and for additional living and entertainment space for the whole family, leaving the sitting room in the main house free for non TV dominated activities. The Hayloft is equipped with a new smart TV, has its own WiFi capacity, enjoys underfloor heating throughout, and has a new state of the art woodburner with three glass doors allowing sight of the flames from anywhere on the ground floor. The Hayloft connects to its own bathroom along a corridor (both with underfloor heating), with heated towel rail and large walk in shower with both overhead and angled showerheads. The corridor contains coat racks, mirror, ample room for boots shoes etc, and a one click state of the art clothes drier (yes, it rains on Dartmoor!) which can be easily moved in front of the woodburner when you go to bed, leaving clothes toasty and dry for the morning. It is a beautiful space and often we choose to stay there for the beauty, and the form, and the romance of it.

About Alan and Caroline

We are a family of five who have loved to spend holidays and weekends on our own and with groups of friends. We (Alan and Caroline) both work in London and this has been our haven. Our children are now grown up but still come down when they can. When we have large groups we sometimes are able to draft in the lovely Katy (a charming and very experienced chalet host who now lives in Tiverton) to do the catering; she makes everything go like a dream, is the best fun, totally discreet, and is the only person I am prepared to allow to run my kitchen other than me! If you are interested do contact us to see if she is available to help during your holiday, either for individual days or for longer periods. She knows CBC very well, and is a wonderful addition to a busy household.

Alan and Caroline purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Alan and Caroline chose West Devon

We fell in love with Combe Bridge Cottage when we first saw it. It is on the edge of the moor with fabulous walks right from our door step. The scenery is breathtaking and everyone who stays here sleeps deep and contented sleeps, with the sound of the babbling stream in the background. The hamlet of Combe is a friendly haven, and the small village of Scoriton, just 5 minutes away, has a wonderful pub with great beer and a warm welcome. It is very easy to access - just 10 minutes off the Exeter-Plymouth Expressway (A38).

Above all it is a beautiful, serene and peaceful place to be, and has given us some of our happiest times, hunkering down with family and friends, walking, eating, reading, drinking, sleeping, laughing, dancing. We have become fit and found peace walking the moors, and the unhurried pace of life is a marvellous antidote to our demanding career driven London lives.

What makes this cottage unique

The combination of beautiful cottage, replete with all creature comforts and ability to absorb large numbers of people with barely a murmur, and the extraordinary wild varied scenery of Dartmoor on our doorstep, makes this the perfect sanctuary. The Steinweg-Grotrian grand piano is a particular draw and there is tons of sheet music covering everything from Bach to Beyonce for you to enhance your playing skills. Feel free to bring portable instruments to play along with - it's a great space for making music.

We provide high quality all cotton bed linen, soft and warm goose and duck feather duvets, with antique Welsh blankets and modern woollen blankets on bed ends; thick fluffy towels; Simple handwash; and Molton Brown toiletries in the bathrooms.

The kitchen is equipped with Kenwood mixer, toaster, hand mixer, pestle and mortar, non stick high quality saucepans, a variety of frying pans, colanders, sieves, baking equipment, kitchen scales, aprons and cook books - everything the modern and traditional cook requires.

A basket of logs is provided for use on your arrival in all but summer months.

Wifi is available, with two boosters to locate as you wish to suit your needs around the house. The Hayloft has its own dedicated WiFi. A printer is also available for your use.

We have furnished the house for use as our home from home, with our own rugs, tapestries, blankets, cushions, paintings and artefacts, which add to the beauty of the house and its welcoming, homely feel. Nothing gives us greater pleasure than knowing how much our guests enjoy their stays in this beautiful home - other than staying there ourselves, which we do as much as time permits. We extend a warm welcome to you, and very much hope you enjoy your stay in this most beautiful and restful of homes.

Excellent! 4.6/5 -

17th C thatched cottage, Dartmoor, 6 beds, 4 baths, sleeps 11 (+ baby, + 2)
average rating of 4.642857 based on 14 reviews

This is a charmingly, quirky property with extensive accommodation set in a beautiful, quiet place.

  • 4 of 5

We were a group of 6 retired ladies who'd decided that we preferred to have a property which would allow us our own rooms. We enjoyed walking in the surrounding countryside during the day and cooking for each other in the evenings.

These cottages allowed us ample space to be together or on our own.

The furnishings were all in good taste and perfectly serviceable.

We would have appreciated a more extensive range of crockery so that, when someone was looking for a breakfast bowl, they didn't have to wash up a previously used one.

I have to say that, whilst we didn't require much access to TV, this was only possible via the Hayloft. We considered that it would be preferable if the television was situated in a communal living area, rather than a bedroom.

We loved the peaceful location and got used to negotiating the narrow lanes.

Amazing holiday has been had !

  • 5 of 5

We have had the most amazing time away in Combe Cottage . A stunning property and the weather for the week was perfect too . There were 12 of us plus a baby for the week and the cottage worked perfectly for all of our needs . Fun time in the garden or cards late at night around the kitchen table . The senior members of our family loved the peaceful atmosphere that the cottage gave to us and the younger one loved playing in the stream - although it was a little cold !

I would highly recommend this beautiful place- we were all so sad to leave this morning - thank you again !

Idyllic house with wonderful walking

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful house in an idyllic setting beside a stream was perfect for a very happy family Christmas. As several connected cottages it has lots of interesting nooks and crannies and staircases, with a comfortable living room with open fire and grand piano at its centre, as well as a perfectly equipped kitchen, just right for cooking Christmas meals for 11 without stress. Everything was in very good order including the excellent bathrooms. Good food shopping nearby in Ashburton and the excellent Riverford Farm Shop. Our two families enjoyed several different walks up through deep hollow ways to the moor and in the valley in which the cottage sits. It must be glorious in the summer too. Many thanks to Alan and Caroline for a wonderful week.

Superb family home from home

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful house in a lovely setting close to the moor. Ideal for large family groups. Great kitchen /diner with aga. Only one small gripe - if everyone wanted a shower at the same time the water went off!

Fabulous location for multi generational holiday

  • 5 of 5

We rented this property in August 2016 for four generations of our family. The property is comfortable, quirky, well equipped and clearly well loved. Dartmoor is a lovely part of the country with plenty of interesting sites and parks to visit within easy driving distance - if you are prepared to brave the single lanes. The layout allowed for informal meals in the kitchen or more formal events in the dining room, as well as outdoor dining in the patio. I would not hesitate to recommend this property to anybody wishing to rent it. I am sure it would make for an amazing family Christmas get together.

Beautiful location and cottage, perfect get away for a large family group

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic rambling property where you can be with others or be alone. Gorgeous garden, really enjoyable to sit outside. The tradesmans arms walking distance away with lovely food and atmosphere. Perfect holiday home for all the family from the small ones to the older generation. Highly recommended just be aware of the narrow roads in the area which are manageable once you take care. House full of lovely art and bit's and bobs and feels really homely
