The property consists of three houses built on three large terraces on the edge of four acres of its own woodland. Extremely private but not isolated, there is an old Catalan farmhouse on the middle terrace, The Mas, with a private pool and a second house on the top terrace, Villa d'Olive, with its own private heated pool (see property ref. 71559). The owners live in a third property on the bottom terrace and are on hand should help or advice be required, but every effort will be taken to ensure your privacy and make this a very special holiday.

Wonderful tranquil setting with staggering views!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful rustic farmhouse with a massive pool. Staggering views. Very peaceful location. If you want to get away from it all, this is perfect. The village is a pleasant 10 minute walk for breakfast croissants. There is a lovely restaurant in Montferrer, that does not have a wide selection of food, but is delightful.

For everything else you will need a car. The main supermarket is half an hour away, so stock up there and while the hours away at the villa.

Plenty of walks on the doorstep, we went up to the castle ruins a couple of times, which was a great walk.

Carcassonne and the coast are reachable by car (1&1/2 to 2 hrs).

The property is in fact two rentals and the owners property, but you wouldn't think so. The rentals are completely separate, and you don't even notice the other one. The owners are on hand, but never intrusive. They have a dog which came over a couple of times but wandered off straightway!

The farmhouse has a rustic feel to it, and has everything you could want, including a massive book collection, and films if you need them. The BBQ got a lot of use! Plenty of places to sit outside and inside to eat.

The table tennis table and hammock are great touches. The pool is huge and the grounds are well kept.

What a stunning house and a stunning location. When we arrived rather hot and tired we were warmly welcomed by Linda and Ian. With no provisions (although Linda had advised us to) She gave us water and milk from her own fridge to get us by to save us going into the village of Ceret. We were most grateful as we also didn't want to leave this stunning place so soon!

I cannot stress how beautiful this place is. We sat for many hours day and night just looking at the view. It was like being on top of the world.

The pool is as big as it looks in the pictures. Great for an early morning swim to start your day.

The living accommodation is spotless and maintained to a very high standard. The kitchen is very well equipped from utensils to glasses and crockery.

We ate in most evenings as it was too nice to go anywhere else, shopping at the local village of Ceret (about 20 minutes drive from the house) where there is a Spa shop which sells everything you need and exceptionally cheap and very nice wine and a great boucherie for your meats and pate.

You definitely need a car to get around, even if it's just to get your supply's and back again!

Location is great with lots of villages nearby to drive to. Montferrer village is a 5 minute drive has one restaurant which we ate in twice and the food is wonderful and very reasonable (Au Diamant Noir). The owners are charming. A good place to eat on your first night.

I would highly recommend this house to anybody. We shall definitely be returning.

My only niggle was that we were only supplied with 2 bath towels for the week and would have been nice to have clean towels during our stay.

This would certainly not stop us returning though.

Thank you Ian & Linda.

Martin & Sarah.

Owner's Response: Great review, thank you, extra towels would not have been a problem, wished you had asked! No one has ever mentioned it before, linen and towels are changed at the end of the week when staying longer, but will now mention in the property notes that extra towels are available on request. Also, the closest town is Arles sur Tech, a 20 minute drive, where there is a Spar, butchers, bakers etc., and Ceret, a larger town, is a 35 minute drive. Our village of Montferrer is a 10 minute walk!

We love this place so much we have been coming back for the last eight years. I would like to keep this villa all to myself but its good to share something this special. Yes the villa is beautifully decorated, has a well equipped kitchen, exceptional audio visual equipment and a comprehensive film library and a great choice of books. You can swim in the enormous pool, play table tennis, badminton and boules BUT the reason we return year after year is the location, ambiance, views and overall feeling of relaxation and well-being that we experience in this Utopia. Linda and Ian are the perfect hosts and are always friendly and accommodating but never intrusive. We go to local markets and shops for food and wine but always return to the Villa as soon as possible.

You do need a car to get around and there are many activities nearby should you want to pursue them. But for us La Mas is all we need.....

This is by far the best place we have ever been to! Very peaceful and relaxing with stunning views of the mountains. We absolutely love this area of France and will certainly be back next year! Linda & Ian have been very welcoming and helpful but discreet at the same time. Many thanks again for making our stay so wonderful. We enjoyed every minute of it!

A stunning property in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Can Galan. The owners, Lyn and Ian, made us very welcome from our arrival (so did their dog, Lula - a very friendly rescuee, who came to visit us each morning at breakfast!). Lyn and Ian could not have done more to help us settle in and feel at home, in a very understated and non-intrusive manner.

The property is very well equipped and spacious, with good separation between the two villas we were barely aware of our neighbours. The garden and the area around the pool are large and well kept, and also provided with table tennis and badminton which we put to good use.

Montferrer is a very pretty and peaceful village, a comfortable ten minute stroll from Can Galan, with a very friendly bar which also sells bread and croissants each morning, and with a range of paths going on up the mountains that we walked and/or cycled. The village is well off the beaten track (a 15 minute drive from the road along the Tech valley, far below), with very little traffic (during our stay, shortly after the Tour de France passed through the Pyrenees, there seemed to be more bicycles than motorised vehicles passing by).

Ceret (a few kilometres down the valley) is a lively town with a very helpful and well equipped bike shop - essential for us! And up the valley, Prats de Mollo is a beautiful small town with fortifications, overlooked by a castle, and with two very pretty mountain passes to Spain.

We would thoroughly recommend this property.

An exceptional location for total rest and recouperation. Wonderful views of the mountains, a good centre for exploring the local villages and experiencing the exhilarating roads through the mountains. The accommodation was excellent with everything that one needed for the stay. Our thanks to Linda and Ian for their hospitality, help and discretion.

Owner's Response: It is a pretty special location with amazing views and worth the 15 minute drive up, on a very good road, from the valley below. Montferrer village is only a 10 minute walk though, so you don't always have to get in the car to go for a drink or a meal, or even to buy bread!

Car: necessary

Picturesque Montferrer village, which is only a short walk, is now appearing in many tourist guides because of its old Romanesqe church and its spectacular views of the valley and coast. Although very small, it has a bar/restaurant, swimming pool, crazy golf, children's play area and tennis court. Locally available are guided walks, tours of local vineyards, pony trekking, 4x4 Off-roading, trout fishing and the professional 18 hole golf course at Falgos. The owners highly recommend a stout pair of shoes suitable for walking as the local signed walks offer spectacular and stunning views impossible to see any other way!

The closest shops and supermarkets are in Arles-sur-Tech, a 15 minute drive.

The ancient Romans were the first people to use the valley for rest and recuperation and were responsible for the Spa towns and churches. For centuries many great musicians and artists have been attracted to the Pyrenee Orientales, the sunniest region of France. In recent times, most of the great modern artists, Picasso, Matisse, Chagall and Dufy, to name but a few, have lived in the area and found it a great source of inspiration, from the beautiful village of Collioure on the coast with its ancient castle built by the Kings of Majorca, to the spectacular mountains. Also, whilst in exile from fascist Spain, Picasso lived for some time in Ceret, a small town at the start of the valley, which now boasts a famous modern art museum. The region is rich in Cathar history and castles and the majority of these are situated amidst the vineyards.

On both sides of the border there are many coastal resorts, from picturesque fishing villages to large towns. Over the border in Spanish Catalonia, which is a thirty minute drive, there are many places of interest. In about 600BC the area was colonised by the Greeks and Phoenicians and they planted many of the vines and olive groves in the region. Of particular interest on the coast are the extensively excavated ruins of the Graeco/Roman city at Empuries. Close to the border is the town of figueres where Salvador Dali lived most of his life and his large home has now been converted to a Dali Museum. Many guide books and maps are available at the house.

During the summer months there are numerous events and concerts of all types. Of particular interest are the classical orchestral concerts in the castle on the coast at Collioure and just over the border in Spain at Castello Perallada, and also, many concerts and events in Perpignan. In French and Spanish Catalonia the activities and places to visit are too numerous to mention, but there is a large collection of guide books, maps, programmes of activities & concerts available at the house, as well as a specially commissioned guide of tours and places of interest in the region.

The valley, although close to Spain and the Mediterranean sea, does not suffer the problems of mass tourism, and is a beautiful unspoilt part of the South of France, in fact, the farthest south one can go - a true undiscovered treasure - the lost valley!
