The beautiful traditional house, fully modernized, dates back to 1830. It is built around a large central courtyard which links all the buildings - the farmhouse, the cottage and the barn (now a games room). We let the whole property out (up to 10 people) or the house without the cottage (up to 6 people). The courtyard is perfect for alfresco meals under the pergola and is particularly pretty lit up at night. Renovation was completed 4 years ago. Renovated to a high standard everything is geared up for comfortable contemporary living - from the well equipped kitchen (including a big American fridge/freezer with ice-maker/chilled water facility) and separate utility room to satellite TV (UK programs), video, music-system, comfy sofas and restful beds with cheerful cotton bedlinen. The games room has table tennis, pool, table football and a variety of outdoor games - board games, books, etc. in the house. The large swimming pool is fully heated.

There are many outdoor pursuits (sailing, water skiing, canoeing, golf, etc.) and many interesting places to visit (including Cordes, Albi, Najac & Saint Antonin Noble Val.

La Poujoulie was featured and highly recommended in an article in London's Evening Standard by one of their travel writers who stayed there.

We have had many guests over the years which almost without exception have been very favourable. A representative sample are quoted below. These are all recorded in a book in the house and can be verified. In particular guests have commented on the comfortable and well equipped house, the views, peace and quiet, the swimming pool, games room, and the general area.

Brief extracts are summarised below. Full and detailed comments are available on request.

“The house was absolutely amazing. As I wrote in the comments book we have been renting farmhouses/barns for some years and have always said between them all we could probably make up the ideal place if we could have the pool from one, the garden from another, the location from somewhere else etc, but think we may have stopped looking as for all of us La Poujoulie has it all."

“We had a great time at Poujoulie and were lucky with the weather, which was very good indeed. You have a fantastic property which has just about everything one could think of.“

“We had a great time at La Poujoulie in June and hope to return again soon, it's a fantastic place (comments left in guest book)." “we enjoyed the holiday in La Poujoulié very much: wonderful house, a lot of things to do (esp. table tennis in the barn and Cycling tours), nice cities around (Albi & Toulouse); it was perfect; thank you very much!"

“I just wanted to let you know that we had a superb time at La Poujoulie in August. It was wonderfully equipped in a very thoughtful way for families. The teenagers had a great time. The house and its facilities were such a nice environment."

“My party and I just wanted to email and let you know that we had a fantastic time at La Poujoulie. it was the most perfect house in a perfect location. It had all the appliances that we could need and the pool and games barn were a godsend."

“Paul and I have just returned from our three weeks at La Poujoulie and I am writing to let you know that we had a wonderful time there and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We had fantastic weather and didn't really want to leave!"

“We have had a truly memorable holiday and enjoyed much good weather and discovering the area. Your house is charming, was very comfortable, well provided and everyone fitted in well. The pool was in much use"

Entertainment & Activities:: Sporting & Leisure:

Cap Decouverte, Blaye-les-Mines. (25 km distant) This vast leisure centre in a former open cast mine is one of a kind with dry ski slope, skate park, rail tobogganing, water skiing and much more. Atlantis Waterpark at Albi (45 km) - long water slides, etc. 18 hole golf course at Albi. Lac de Pareloup near Rodez (70 km) - water sports and beaches. Lake near Carmaux (15 km) where you can hire sailing dinghy's and pedalos. Riding and tennis in Mirandol (9 km). River fishing permits readily available. River canoeing and swimming. Vineyards near Gaillac where you can taste before you buy.

Tarn is an area of fascinating medieval towns - such as Cordes-sur-Ciel, Najac and Albi (birthplace to the artist Toulouse Lautrec - visit his museum - and home to a magnificent 13th century cathedral). Open air markets throughout the summer months in many locations.

Food & Gastronomy::

You will find most day to day food (wonderful fresh bread and pastries, butcher's, fruit and vegetables and small supermarkets) at Mirandol (9 kms) and Laguepie (12 kms) where there are also ATMs. For a bigger one-stop supermarket shop you must go to Carmaux (19 kms.) or better still, Albi (45 kms.) The best restaurant food is undoubtedly the local fare and in the summer little restaurants open up all over the place offering delicious straightforward meals based around the specialties of the region which are duck and foie gras. Though you'll also find pizza places and even the burger and chips have found favour in the bigger towns! (Actually chips in France are on most menus and quite delicious!). Needless to say the wine is abundant, excellent and inexpensive - try the local rose (sold by the 3 litres!) and ignore convention by serving it in a long glass with lots of ice - very refreshing!

About Jim & Maggie Lock

It has been our dream for a number of years to have a home in France.

After looking at many properties we came across La Poujoulie.

Built in 1830 it had stood empty for 60 years until the previous owners brought it back to life in 2001.

From the moment we stood at the gates and looked across the pool to the countryside beyond we knew this was the place for us and that we would never tire of such a wonderful view.

We relish the peaceful feeling of relaxation it offers as soon as we open the big arched doors and step across the courtyard into the farmhouse. But when the whole family comes - well that's another thing altogether! When every bed is occupied the whole property reverberates with the joyful fun and laughter! We've tried to make it a 'home from home' and well equipped for laid back easy living whether we're just the two of us staying or a full compliment of 10 people of different ages! And I think we can safely say it works well regardless of numbers - just read our visitors book and you'll find everyone who stays here agrees with us!

Jim & Maggie Lock purchased this farmhouse in 2017

Why Jim & Maggie Lock chose Saint-Christophe

Big group? No problem? Small party? No problem! We offer flexible accommodation! Either take over the whole property for up to 10 people (plus a baby in our travel cot!) using all our bedrooms (all good double size - 3 in main farmhouse and 2 in the cottage just paces away, across the pretty courtyard) or just use the main farmhouse, on its own without the cottage, for up to 6 people (and a baby!). You choose! Even with 10 people, it is still spacious with the run of the whole property at your disposal and if you are a party of six or less, then please see our separate listing for the house only. You will still have exclusive use of everything else at the property. We never let separately.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Rain or shine you can keep the kids amused at La Poujoulie this summer! If it's raining - how about a game of ping-pong or table football? Or use your skills at the full sized pool table? And when the sun comes out again (as it soon will!) roll back the pool cover and jump in - having switched off the pool alarm first of course! (installed for your peace of mind for the times when the pool is unattended) - the pool is heated, making it the perfect temperature every time you swim. And, later, when the little ones are safely tucked up in bed, relax with a glass of wine as you watch the setting sun soften the colours of the surrounding hills and just listen...........to the silence! Definitely no noise pollution in this heavenly part of rural France! And just wait till you see the profusion of stars in the sky once it's dark! No light pollution either!

The cottage has bedrooms and shower room on ground floor so is suitable for people who find stairs difficult. Upstairs in the cottage is one big studio room with TV and a kitchenette area making it an ideal escape for teenagers, grandparents or a second family! Fencing ensures that small children can be kept out of the pool garden and within sight of the house. The garden is E, S & W facing with stunning views in all directions - particularly long to the south. There is a barbeque and plenty of garden furniture. For colder months the property is well insulated and has double glazing, gas central heating and there is an efficient wood burning stove in the farmhouse living room. We accept pets by prior arrangement and telephone/Internet access, central heating and fuel for the wood burner is by arrangement and in addition to the rental costs.

Magnificent holiday home!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had the most wonderful holiday here, the house was supremely spacious and comfortable, and the hosts seem to have thought of everything. In fact it was the best-stocked rental house we've ever stayed in. The games room was a big hit and all members of the family were catered for, so altogether a truly harmonious holiday! The views around the house and pool area were magnificent and I would highly recommend this house for anyone looking for somewhere peaceful and "away from it all".

Beautiful, relaxing, spacious perfect holiday

  • 5 of 5

We arrived to in the evening to a wonderful sight of the house set amidst the breath taking views and a very welcome "welcome" basket which included a lovely bottle of wine! This prompted us to head straight out to the veranda and enjoy the wine as we sat admiring the views while the children headed straight for the pool! What a perfect start to what turned out to be a fantastic holiday in beautiful settings.

The house is very well equipped and we had more than enough space for our two families. The children slept in the "cottage" on the other side of the courtyard while the adults and the very young slept in the main house.

There was plenty of things for us all to do at the house and the children (of all ages 5 - 55 in our case) loved the games room and everything in it. The pool was wonderful and there was plenty of garden for running and playing as well as relaxing.

The house is very private but with the hire car we had easy access to many places of interest for day trips including canoeing on a river, picnicking at the lake, visiting some spectacular towns with amazing history and architecture.

We enjoyed it so much we will definitely visit again.

The views from the house may be gentle but within a very short distance you will come across the awe-inspiring river gorges that the area is famous for. The many stunning medieval fortified towns and villages are a joy to explore and the wine area of Gaillac is home to one of the oldest wine producing regions in France where, in recent years, there has been a growing trend to producing some excellent organic wines.

Other Activities: Former open cast mine at Blaye-les-Mines, now a vast leisure centre with dry ski slope, skate park, rail tobogganing and much more.

Golf: Just outside Albi you will find a picturesque 18-hole golf course next to the River Tarn.
