PRIVATE STRUCTURE. Casale Lamate is a house which, although of recent construction, has retained the unique charm of the Tuscan farmhouses thanks to the recycling and use of materials originating in these areas, such as the handmade terracotta floors and the beautiful chestnut ceiling beams. The backdrop to this picturesque place, situated on a small knoll in the Tuscan hills with a breathtaking view that stretches as far as the eye can see over the Val di Chiana, is a land famous for the many nuances of its cultural, artistic and gastronomic history. Casale Lamate is just 10 minutes from Cortona, a charming little town dating back to the Etruscan civilization and at the heart of a triangle whose three vertices are towns among the most historically rich of central Italy: Siena, Perugia and Arezzo. The proximity of the property to fast roads, such as the A1 motorway, make travel easy and bring two of the most beautiful cities of art like Rome and Florence within easy reach.

The house has three floors, each directly accessible from the outside and connected both internally and externally with stone stairs. The main entrance is located on the ground floor and leads into an open-plan area consisting of a comfortable living room with working fireplace and a large kitchen-dining room with access to the patio where guests can dine while admiring the enchanting view. From the living room a staircase leads down to the basement with double bedroom and adjacent bathroom with shower, fully equipped gym and laundry room. A second staircase in the living room leads up to the first floor consisting of a study, a double bedroom with ensuite bathroom with shower and another two double bedrooms, one with queen-size bed and a single bed in the mezzanine, sharing a bathroom with shower.

The fenced-in park consists of three terraces that extend around the house for about 1500 square metres, the ideal place to spend one’s time relaxing or reading. In the garden planted with lawn, along with the beautiful olive and oak trees typical of this area, are numerous flowering plants like oleanders and roses, but also a lot of strawberry plants with their delicious fruits.

Swimming Pool

Open from the last Saturday in April to the first Saturday in October, the pool is located to one side of the house, on the same level as the first floor and can be reached from outside the ground floor via a flight of stone steps. It is not visible from the house and is about 10 m away from it. Lined in PVC with a stone border, it is rectangular in shape and measures 4x8 m with the depth ranging from 1.40 m to 1.90 m; it has chlorine purification and a ladder for access to the water. It is equipped with both internal and external lighting in the surrounding area which includes a small pergola; sunbeds, deckchairs and umbrellas are provided for relaxing in the sun. A small annex contains a kitchenette and a bathroom with shower.

A Tuscan Delight

  • 5 of 5

On arrival at Casale Lamate for a 3 week stay, we (there were 4 of us) were stunned by the view from the Loggia - sweeping fields in a variety of colors. The loggia faces west and we witnessed several remarkable sunsets over the weeks we were there. The house itself was a nicely restored stone cottage. It had 4 bedrooms, the largest of which was on the lowest level and thus a little musty smelling. As it was unseasonably warm in early September, the air conditioning was especially welcome. The kitchen was well equipped with a six burner stove. We initially had a difficult time figuring out how to use the dishwasher, but Tecla Vadi, the manager, provided us with all the assistance we needed. She was always available for questions and gave us excellent recommendations for restaurants in Cortona and Camucia. The property was beautifully landscaped and meticulously maintained. Early every morning a groundskeeper arrived to prune the bushes and flowers and clean the pool (which was a godsend given the warm weather). The house was located in a convenient area and made travel to Cortona, the terrific hill town and towns like Arezzo, Siena, Pienza, Montepulciano, Montalcino, Gubbio, Castiglione del Lago/Lake Trasimeno and Perugia easy. We also traveled to the magnificent La Foce gardens in Chianciamo Terme and the Isola Maggiore in Lake Trasimeno. We also visited the nearby Fattoria Avignonesi for wine tasting. The Camucia/Cortona train station is a few miles up the road, so we left the car at the villa and took the train to Florence for an overnight visit. A GPS is an absolute necessity. Anyone driving to Casale Lamate should put the coordinates for the house in the GPS, as the house is not that easy to find.

The house had cable TV and WiFi. We needed a little help getting everything to work, but the owner was very responsive to our needs. In sum, we had a glorious time and would return there in a heartbeat.

Lamate Casale is in an ideal geographical location, within easy reach of the beautiful art cities of Tuscany and Umbria such as Siena, Arezzo, Perugia, Assisi and Orvieto, thanks to its proximity to the Siena-Perugia highway and the A1 motorway exit of Valdichiana. This is a area given over to relaxation and pampering, with its proximity to the sensorial spa of Chianciano Terme, just 30 minutes away, and to food and wine tasting with the famous wines of Montepulciano, one of most beautiful medieval villages in the area. The nearby Lake Trasimeno and the rolling hills of the Val d'Orcia, with its timeless villages like Pienza and Montalcino, are the ideal places for excursionists who have only to choose from the many nature trails like the one that retraces the old Via Francigena. Just 5 minutes’ drive away are the railway stations of Camucia and Terontola, with connections to many Italian cities.
