Comfort and elegance in the heart of Spoleto

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderfully comfortable week in this elegant apartment. Although right in the heart of the old town and conveniently close to the market square with its shops, restaurants and cafes, the street in which the Casa Leone is situated is very quiet. We slept superbly well. The bed was comfortable, the apartment warm, even in mid-February – we liked walking on the old wooden floorboards – and the kitchen well appointed. We particularly enjoyed shopping locally, cooking our own meals and eating at the large table in the spacious kitchen.

The apartment is arranged around three sides of a courtyard. Rooms lead from one to the next. As we explored it for the first time, we were reminded of the description of Tancredi and Angelica in The Leopard, wandering through the “seemingly limitless” palace of Donnafugata. Feeling a little disorientated ourselves initially, we thought of Don Fabrizio’s maxim that “a house of which one knew every room wasn’t worth living in”. We opened a door at the top of a small spiral staircase in one room and were surprised to find ourselves looking down on a corridor in another part of the house. Of course, as we started to feel at home, the flat shrunk a little, but this sense of excitement at living in such a grand and historic building didn’t wear off. Large, imposing rooms are juxtaposed with smaller, more intimate spaces, as is antique with modern, and the apartment as a whole achieves a sense of homeliness. We liked the quirkiness of some of the spaces, particularly the small laundry room, perched as if in a minstrel’s gallery above the small green corridor. We thought this was a great piece of design and a very practical use of space. We placed our computer near the router, as although the wifi does reach most corners of the house, the internet reception is by far best in this part of the house.

The walls are filled with artworks. Our eyes kept catching new prints, photographs and original paintings as the week went on and we would draw each other’s attention to our new discoveries and talk about them. A lovely experience to live with such an eclectic collection.

We can’t recommend this apartment highly enough. It’s very easy to set off from here on walks into the beautiful Umbrian countryside as the Casa Leone is positioned fairly high up in the town. It is also very easy to reach the lower town, as there is an entrance to the new moving walkway extremely close by, which links the lower and upper parts of the town.

Owner's Response: What a lovely review! I only just spotted it as I try to ask our guests to take a moment to let others know what they did or didn't like about the experience but really hate to bother people about it. Perhaps your lyrical comments suffice or may have daunted others to match your level of eloquence? In any case thank you very much for taking the time to let us know how much you enjoyed your stay. We hope you'll return and send you our very best wishes, Sophie
