Well appointed flat in a unique historic village.

  • 5 of 5

A family of 4, we spent 4 nights at this property in Certaldo Alto, a small, historically proud village above the otherwise unexceptional small farming town of Certaldo. The host, Veronica has equipped the flat with everything you might need for a comfortable stay (fans, WiFi, well equipped kitchen, etc) but with at least 6 excellent and reasonably priced restaurants in the village and all within a few hundred meters, we had a hard time cooking for ourselves!

This is a pedestrian only town, although Veronica will help you bring your car inside the walls when you arrive to drop off your gear. Our children were very happy there and ranked it as 'one of the best' of the places we stayed at while in Italy. We made one trip to town to go to the public pool the first afternoon, just to cool down and get a feel for the other Certaldo. This is also an excellent base to explore the area; we chose San Gimignano and Lucca (not quite local), and caught Siena on the way out when we headed further south.

As luck would have it, we left the morning of the day the big annual street festival Mercantia started. We heard enough rave reviews from people both in and out of Certaldo that we made a separate trip back one evening just to check it out. Definitely, if you are in Tuscany in July, check out Mercantia.

Overall, a great experience in Certaldo Alto and staying in Veronica's flat.

Nice apartment in a wonderful old city

  • 5 of 5

This apartment was quaint and nice for a short visit. We loved this village on the hill. The drive up is spectacular. It also is easily accessible vie cable car. The aprtment was tight for 2 couples but it worked well. I also want to thank Virginia for helping get reservations for our nephew at another apartment in the village. Everybody was so nice and we loved the location for trips to Florence, Volterra, Siena and San Gimignano.

Fairytale experience

  • 5 of 5

Very unique experience which was enjoyed by all of us. Veronica was very accommodating responded to my emails and texts. This village only has 10 restaurants which made the experience even more unique, quaint and romantic. I would highly recommend this house to all and would love to come back soon.🍷󭰼򋧮🇹򎐽򐈀

Great apartment in a medieval Etruscan town.

  • 5 of 5

So much history and energy run through this town and apartment. We enjoyed our stay in Certaldo. There were two concerts in town and a few fairytale weddings that we came across. The bedrooms were big and the bathrooms were clean and efficient. Veronica was very helpful with getting our bearings and the bottle of wine was a nice touch. We loved the cats that roamed the town and occasionally our apartment, lol. The views were spectacular and we enjoyed sipping our wine watching the sun go down over the Tuscan hills. The kitchen was perfect for us as we cooked six out of seven dinners. Our one dinner out at Osteria del Vicario was phenomenal. The service was excellent and the food was amazing. The local wine bar was teeming with younger locals in the evening and the owners were very nice to us. Great selection. We highly recommend this apartment and Certaldo Alto for someone who wants to experience real Tuscan living.

CERTALDO ALTO, rare example of medieval town still intact, in the heart of Val d'Elsa, has a very important recognition such as the orange flag of the Italian Touring Club, eco-tourism / environment of great value. Certaldo Alto stands on top of a hill bordered by cypress trees, alleys, towers and castles of another time, with a unique panorama that surrounds it. The village, between moss and stone, clay crumbled and torches on the walls of red brick, is still enclosed in the three ancient gates of the past: Porta Alberti, Porta al Sole and Porta al Rivellino, still well preserved. A Certaldo Alto, home of Giovanni Boccaccio, author of the Decameron, you can visit the house where the writer lived, now a museum that houses works and objects that belonged to the famous poet. The most representative monument of the village is undoubtedly Praetorian Palace, dating from the twelfth century, former residence of the Counts Alberti and later home to all Vicars that over the centuries there have ruled. On the facade of the Palazzo you can in fact recognize the emblems, marble and terracotta, with the image of each family that has been in power. Impactful are the Prisons Criminals, inside of which you can still recognize graffiti and testimonies of prisoners who spent long periods without seeing sunlight. Of particular interest is the garden of the palace that houses the contemporary artwork of Hidetoshi Nagasawa 'The garden of tea'. The adjacent Church of Saints Thomas and Prospero preserves very important work: the fresco of the 'Tabernacle of the executed' by Benozzo Gozzoli. In the Church of Saints James and Philip, however, they found the tomb of Boccaccio and the urn of Blessed Giulia, figure as important for the citizens of the place. From the church it leads to the Convent of the Augustinians, with a particularly beautiful Romanesque cloister, from which you get to the cell where the Blessed Giulia spent many years of his life. Reachable from Certaldo Alto, through a professional 'way of life', is the Park Hill of Canonica, equipped with hiking trails, barbecue areas, and large green lawns. A few kilometers from Certaldo, visiting the Church of San Lazzaro in Lucardo, in Lombard Romanesque style, you can enjoy an unforgettable view.

San Gimignano, a medieval town surrounded by walls, is famous worldwide come'La City of Torri'ed is UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Volterra is the oldest village in Tuscany, where you can still taste the atmosphere of a time, between monuments and unspoiled landscapes.

PISA is known worldwide for its Square of Miracles, which houses the famous Leaning Tower.

Florence, cradle of the Renaissance, houses important artistic treasures. Here is nice to walk in the old town, on the river bank, to dwell on the Ponte Vecchio, or enjoy a breathtaking view from Piazzale Michelangelo.

VINCI, Orange Flag of the Touring Club, is known as the city of Leonardo Da Vinci. Here you can visit the house where he lived, the church where he was baptized, the Leonardo Museum and Library.

Siena is famous for its Piazza del Campo, the shell shape, in which is held the Palio, is coming in July and August.

CHIANTI offers unique landscapes, characterized by hills, vineyards and olive groves, small villages, churches and farmhouses. The Chianti landscapes are reproduced in postcards and calendars around the world.

Monteriggioni is a fortified village remained intact, as if time had never passed.

Montepulciano, home of wine 'Nobile', features Renaissance palaces, ancient churches and a boundless view.

The harmonious Pienza, the thermal village of Bagno Vignoni, the famous Montalcino can be reached in a short time.
