Charming Hobbit House (the small house) has its own entrance onto the street. Hobbit House can be rented with Highview (the large house) or it can be rented on its own. If rented separately from Highview there is no access to the terrace. There is one bedroom with ensuite bathroom, a comfortable sitting room with sofa, armchair and TV/DVD, a dining/kitchen and additional bathroom.
The bedroom has a double bed, a chest-of-drawers and wardrobe. There are two shower rooms, one on each floor, with walk-in shower, wash basin and toilet. The kitchen/dining room has a refrigerator, microwave, washing machine, table and chairs, gas stove and kitchen utensils. There is a flat-screen TV/DVD with French digibox channels and Sky box with SKY News but there is no internet access or WiFi. Hobbit House has all the facilities required for a pleasant stay with a lovely view at a good value price. The small, quiet road at the front, mainly for bikes and walkers, gives access to the river and village.
Perfect for couples or a group of friends and family, these two lovely old stone village houses are situated in the heart of the small, friendly, southern town of Le Boulou with the art gallery in front and the beautiful river behind. Although central, they are situated in a quiet area of the old part with local bakeries, shops, bars, good restaurants and a summer swimming pool nearby. There is a street market in the town twice a week. Le Boulou is easily reached by motorway and less than an hour by bus or car from both Perpignan and Girona (Spain) airports or just over an hour from Beziers airport.
These two houses are joined together by the fabulous wooden decking/terrace area. The large house sleeps six or seven, the small house sleeps two and a baby and they have been recently renovated. They are comfortable, well-equipped & have everything you may need (click on the tabs top left above to find details, availability and rates for each property). The houses can be rented separately or together (when a 10% discount is given on the total cost). Both houses have stunning views of the mountains. Highview (the large house) also has direct access to the beautiful private terrace/decking area, which is only open to Hobbit House (the small house) if the two are booked together. Highview is on three floors & sleeps six, or seven if required, with three modern bathrooms, one on each floor. It has a large living-room and kitchen and a conservatory leading on to the terrace. Sleeping is in one large double bedroom, one twin, one single plus a sofabed, a put-up bed & a cot. (NB. access to the top floor bedrooms is through the first floor room with fully curtained off bedroom area.) The bedrooms all have splendid views as does the terrace. There is free wifi throughout the large house. Hobbit House has its own entrance on a street to the rear of the large house. It has two floors, a double bedroom, sitting room, kitchen and two bathrooms and a cot and is excellent value. Please note there is no wifi in Hobbit House. There are lovely mountain views from the windows, nearby river access and you can sit outside the front door of the small house and watch games of boules taking place; it has access to the terrace but only if booked together with the large house.
Beaches/swimming/walking/cycling: There is a good path from the back of the house down to the river and along it to the local swimming and fishing/water-boarding lakes near St Jean Pla de Corts. The lakes are a 30 minutes walk from the houses or can be reached in 5 minutes by car & have glorious views, a cafe/bar, adventure trails in the trees by the lakeside and pedalos/kayaking. Le Boulou has a good municipal summer swimming pool 5 minutes walk from the houses. There are excellent beaches such as Argeles & lively resorts within a short drive from Le Boulou. You can follow the Route des Vins and discover local vineyards and enjoy winetasting.
There are many historic sites nearby including the fabulous Cathar castles. Find out more at the excellent tourist office in Le Boulou.
There are numerous local walks suitable for all ages and fitness levels. There are guided walks on offer all year round. They are graded and run by local guides into the mountains, coastal areas and over the frontier into Spain; The grand route 10 passes very close to Le Boulou.
Skiing: Font Romeu is just two hours drive from Le Boulou via the road to Prades and Andorra to the pistes of the Cerdagne. There is plenty of scope for both experienced skiiers and beginners plus cross country skiing.
Golf: The nearest golf course is a nine hole course at Amelie Les Bains but experienced golfers might prefer the new course at St Cyprien on the coast or the wonderful course at Falgos, high in the mountains with a magnificent view of the Spanish coastline and a luxury hotel and spa. Check the website.
We live in Manchester and enjoy all that it has to offer but also love spending time in different countries, particularly France. We are at the stage in our lives where we can look forward to more time in our house in Le Boulou, and also travelling further afield.
Catherine & Paul Midwinter purchased this house in 2013
Friends bought a house in Le Boulou in 2001, we stayed with them over the years and fell in love with the beauty of the area, the historic and artistic connections, the variety of activities and, of course, the delicious food and locally produced wines. Then in 2012 we couldn't resist the chance to buy a wonderfully located property up for sale. Right time, right place, right house! We hope you will love the house and its brilliant location as much as we do.
We love the mountain views from our windows and the fact that it is very quiet and hidden at the back of the old town of Le Boulou near the river. The decked terrace feels very private and to be able to walk so easily from the living room onto the terrace with its wonderful view and light is a treat. Having both the large house and small house both leading off the terrace but with separate, spacious accommodation and plenty of bathrooms makes for very flexible arrangements - perfect for groups of friends or family. The house is strategically excellent with nearby airports and good roads for visiting the area including mountains, a lovely coastline and also nearby Spain. Who could resist?
These rates are for the small house only. If booking both the large and small house together there is a 10 per cent discount on the total amount. Please click on the 'large house' tab at the top of the page to find the rates for the three bedroom large house.
The quoted rates include preparing the house, plus bed-linen & towels. Please bring your own swimming and beach towels.
It is preferred if changeover day is not a Saturday, please.
One well-behaved pet is allowed in Hobbit House if booked in advance. Please enquire before booking. There will be a charge for bringing a pet.
Return of the deposit is dependent on the house being left as you found it - tidy, swept with all rubbish removed and the washing-up done, please. We reserve the right to keep some or all of the deposit if extra cleaning is required after your stay.
We rented this property for 1 week coinciding with extended family who rented the larger property. As such it was an ideal combination - a cosy, self-contained retreat from others when required but the 2nd property was large enough for all to eat and socialise in if necessary. The information given on reaching the house was fine and all its facilities were excellent. The downstairs double room was simply furnished but with adequate storage space, a good ensuite shower room and full of character. Upstairs there was a cosy sitting room that we turned into a spare room for kids with another bath room next door. The kitchen was well equipped with nice views out across fields and trees to the distant hills above Ceret. The layout of the house seemed a little odd at first but we soon got used to it and found it very spacious for 2 - 3 people.
The house as a whole is wondefully situated on the edge of le Boulou - 2 mins walk from a path leading along the river but equally close to local boulangerie and the streets leading to local shops and market etc. Le Boulou has quite a bit of character - some nice shady streets with cafes and the twice weekly market. For larger shopping trips there is a retail park about 7 mins drive away that sells everything you could need.
For trips out exlporing the region le Boulou is ideally situated. We ventured 2 hours away to test the ski slopes near Canigou and some amazing outdoor thermal baths. But closer at hand we also visted Ceret (15 mins by car and also a nice walk) with a lovely modern art gallery, fantastic hill walks and a walled town with bags of character. Equally the lovely coast line is only 30 mins drive away with variety of small coastal towns with good swimming, aquarium for the kids, fantastic restauraants etc. Coulioures is particularly attractive and not too busy in February. We also travelled easily across the border to see the Salvador Dali museum.
We chose to travel to Le Boulou by train. This took about 11 hours from St Pancras with the TGV hitting 290km/hour at one point! On arrival at Perpignan there was a great connection with the very cheap local bus that charges only 1 euro for the 25 minute trip to Le Boulou. It was then easy to travel in by bus the next day to pick up a hire car for the rest of the trip.
All in all - a comfortable, very good value place to stay with tons to do in the area. Enjoy!!
