Location: Situated in the province of Malaga, Spain, the spacious, hilltop Cortijo de San José is 1 ½ km. from Nerja, the town and its beaches, with views of the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and spectacular mountains to the North, East and West.

THE HOUSE AND CORTIJO: The main part of the house has 4 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, a spacious living room, eat in kitchen, a very ample artist’s studio with northern light, and a covered porch with luxuriant roses, honeysuckle, jasmine, and bougainvillea. The smaller, connected, one story structure, the “cortijo,” is the original farm house with 2 bedrooms, a full bathroom, and its own small grapevine shaded patio. Mountain and sea breezes usually keep the house cool in summer. For winter there is a working fireplace and space heaters.

THE SWIMMING POOL AND GROUNDS: The 10 x 4 m. ever flowing, self cleaning, ecological swimming pool is surrounded by ½ acre of lawn, pine and olive trees, a patio with teak table, chairs and parasol, a healthy lily pond with frogs and fish, a pagan meditation circle, and lots of room to relax, frolic and enjoy.

Beyond the ½ acre house and swimming pool grounds are 4 acres of cultivated farmland with avocado, lemon, almond, carob, fig trees, grape vines and 3 hay fields. The house and grounds are overseen by Antonio, the caretaker.

When vegetables and fruit are in season, guests may enjoy what the land offers.

In addition, there is an organic store/ warehouse up the road, in the valley (Agricultura Vedica Ecologica), with excellent quality products from oils to nuts to produce, and delivery service.

Pets are welcome.

A Delightful Week in Sunny Spain

We had a delightful week's stay in this house. Built by the Spanish abstract painter Jose Guerrero who grew up in Granada, it brings the aesthetic sensibilities of a modern painter to the renovation of a traditional Andalucian farm house. With a narrow and winding entrance and walls around half of it, it has the feel of a hilltop retreat like those formerly built in this area by the Moorish aristocracy. Several terraces with spectacular views of Nerja, the ocean, and the Sierra de Tejeda are surrounded by orchards of fig, avocado, olive and lemon trees. Sitting around the pool, one has terrific views of the mountains above Nerja. There are no neighbors to speak of. The only people we saw coming and going were agricultural workers who farm the lower part of the property, but they are some distance away from the house on the other side of a fence and orchard. Kitchen and bathrooms (3!) are clean, modern and well-appointed.

There is a cafe across the street which serves a good breakfast and has a nice terrace with beautiful views of Nerja and the ocean. We never ate dinner there, but we did go down for a beer and tapas in the late afternoon. It's very convenient having it there - it's like having a hotel dining room (with free WiFi).

We spent time at the beach in Nerja (where a fellow named Ayo has been making the best paella in the world for decades), hiking in the mountains, sitting by the pool, and exploring the beautiful mountain town of Frigiliana, which is just a few minutes up the road (don't miss the Mirador bar and restaurant up at the top of the town).

We highly recommend this place to others and we plan to go back and stay there again.

The popular Nerja beaches are a 10 minute drive from the house, where paella and local fish is a speciality. Along the Torrox coast toward Malaga, there are wilder beaches which also have eating, seaside restaurants.

In the evening, Nerja is a great coastal town to stroll around with shops, very good restaurants, and the central town promenade, the Balcon de Europa, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

The spectacular, immense, naturally formed Caves of Nerja are a 5- 10 minute’s drive from the house.

A 10 minute drive up the road is the pristinely whitewashed, gorgeous mountainside village of Frigiliana, where there are shops, bars with local nectar-like wine from muscatel raisins, and good, small restaurants with local cuisine. For those interested in archaeology, there is a small museum with artefacts from an important local Phoenecial necropolis, from the period of Moorish occupation, and more.

For naturalists, doing a little bit of research and driving, there are walks and areas to explore all around the area in the hills, mountains and by the sea.

The city of Granada, which is only is 70 km. (1 ¼ hour's drive) boasts that in the cooler months, one can ski in the Sierra Nevada, outside the city, and go swimming in the Mediterranean Sea along that province's coast in the same day!

In the city of Granada is the magnificent Moorish palace, the Alhambra, the Cathedral and Royal Chapel of Fernando and Isabella, art museums, and much more. Cordoba and Seville, also architectural gems which, like Granada, reflect the rich period of Moorish, Christian and Jewish cultural exchange from 711- 1492 AD, are a bit farther away.

From a practical point of view, across the road, but a good distance from the house is the Axarquia filling station, restaurant & café with WI FI, grocery store, and a machine which recharges Spanish phone and computer modem cards.
