More Details

About the property

House and Barn, Dordogne

The property in two parts, the original house and the stone former barn nestles amongst a charming cluster of honey-coloured stone houses, surrounded by walnut groves, at the end of a no through road. The two building set up is attractive to those people who wish to holiday in company with friends or family but maintain their own space.

This property would perfectly suit two families or couples, or a multi-generational family reunion, who can be together yet have independent facilities, or a couple on their own who wish to get away from it all and enjoy the space, peace and calm of this delightful place.

In high season it is expected that the property be rented as a whole unit, however, in mid and low season it is possible to rent only one of the units if that is preferred.

With a 5 minute stroll, you reach the banks of the Dordogne. This river is recognised as one of the 15 cleanest rivers in Europe. The nearest swimming beach is at Cenac-et-St-Julien.

Whether you're planning for lazy days at the house with relaxing walks to enjoy the stunning surroundings, or wish for a more active holiday, St.Julien is an excellent place in which to base yourself.

Accessibility

The property does require a fair level of mobility from its visitors as due to its age there are stone and wood stairs throughout the two buildings although the main bedroom of the stone barn is on the ground floor.

We prefer any family with young children stay in the main house where there is space for cot, high chair etc. and safe access to the garden.

Outside

From the living room in the main house doors open onto the pretty, enclosed garden on one side and onto the courtyard on the other. Stone Barn has doors onto the courtyard and a private terrace with table and chairs accessed from the mezzanine bedroom.

Both charcoal and gas barbecues are provided on the property and there is an open barn in the garden that can serve as an outdoor bar for night time or al fresco dining in the shade in the day time.

About James and Aude

James Oxford the owner and your host, is an art director and conceptual artist from Los Angeles.

James and Aude purchased this barn in 2013

Why James and Aude chose Perigord Noir

Your host simply couldn't resist the film set like backdrop to this charming property and on returning to LA he missed no longer having castles in his backyard. He returned to buy this place! As he has found and confidently expects you will too, his house offers the perfect base for discovering the stunning and dramatic scenery of the surrounding area with its chateau, caves, restaurants, riding stables, golf links, river trips and so on and on.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We keep very good memories of visits and meetings held during our stay in France. Our trip went very well and our passing through your house has played an important role. We spent a very pleasant week in St-Julien, we felt at home, in a comfortable house, clean and welcoming. Your welcome (good wine, bread, jams, flowers ...) has affected us as well as your messages to make sure everything went well.

Out of town, very quiet, extremely handy for access to the river

  • 5 of 5

The Stone Barn was well laid out and spacious - perfect holiday accommodation. It was clean, tidy and very well equipped. The access to the pool is simple and we had no issues with sharing it with those staying the the main house. It would be fabulous to book both houses for two families - it would really be ideal as I can imagine there may be situations where access to the pool could be awkward - it really does belong to the main house. We would definitely stay again. The river is a couple of hundred metres down the road with easy access to a lovely sandy island with shallow water perfect for children. The main town (Cenac) is 2.5 miles away for supermarket, boulangerie, tabac etc. but it is a lovely route through the walnut orchards which takes about 15 mins on a bike. It is perfectly placed for access to cycling, canoeing and chateau tours (the via ferrata is a must).

Overall property is very well presented

  • 4 of 5

Hello James and Aude

We have just returned from a 3 week holiday in France during which time we rented your Gite in Cenac St Julienne.

It was a lovely and very well presented Gite, however on arrival we were dismayed to find that the key to the courtyard was missing from the key box, and having checked our information sent by yourselves we discovered that we had not been sent any local contact numbers (we subsequently found them when we did eventually gain entry to the Gite, no good to us!!) it took us almost 2 hours to resolve this situation requiring us to contact a friend who lives in France to find the Owners Direct Telephone No and then a phone call to yourselves in America, this caused us a great deal of anxiety as we had no idea if the agents would be open or whether you would be home and we had limited phone signal which we had to travel back into Cenac to receive.

We had a car full of shopping which we had done on the way into the Gite and we were seriously considering the possibility that we would need to find a Hotel for the night. After making contact with yourself the situation was finally resolved, and we did gain entry to the Gite, but we feel it was extremely negligent to have left us in this situation, and suggest that for future guests you ensure that a local contact number is included on the information sent direct to the guests renting your Gite so as they do not suffer the same extreme anxiety that we felt in this situation.

A couple of other minor issues :–

The gate to the garden and pool could not be locked as the padlock (which was already set to the open position) could not be locked.

There was a problem with the seal on the oven door, this meant that it could not be shut properly and therefore took a long time to heat up

Regards

Ron and Val Fazakerley

P.S we were told by yourselves that Angela would pay us a visit, she never did

Beautiful setting in a quiet village

  • 5 of 5

This was a great property. Beautiful setting in a quiet village. Would be a perfect spot for a quiet and relaxing holiday. The kitchen was great and very well appointed. There is a central courtyard shared between the 2 rental properties as well as a shared pool. The second story balcony had a wonderful view of the surrounding mountains and a lovely spot for Al Fresco dinners. NIce walk to the river. Great spot!

Fantastic accommodation in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

We have just had the most wonderful holiday, staying in the lovely and characterful stone barn. We are a family of 4 (chn aged 9 & 6) and the well equipped accommodation (James really has thought of everything!) and perfect location made for a very relaxing week. The short walk down to the Dordogne river from the barn led us to what we considered to be the most beautiful stretch of the river. Lots of things to do within a short drive (Domme, Castlenaud, kayaking), our only disappointment was that we were only there for 1 week! A perfect holiday destination for families or couples. Simply stunning!

Perfect setting for exploring the Dordogne.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the house after kindly being upgraded by James. It is a super property with everything you need and much more, very comfortable, with lovely personal touches, and a beautiful swimming pool in a garden setting. James is full of local information and really informative. It is approximately 500 yards from the banks of the Dordogne river .

Situated in the tiny village of St Julien, the properties are perfectly placed for exploring the beautiful villages. It is a quiet rural setting with lovely walks. It is wonderfully peaceful, meaning you can escape back to calm and tranquility after your day, yet the main sightseeing villages of the Dordogne are all within a short drive.

Cenac St Julien is a 5 minuets drive away with shops, supermarket, Boulangerie, restaurants etc. There are lots of places to enjoy outdoor activities such as Kyaking in Cenac.

We would definitely return should we be holidaying in the region again.

Owner's Response: Jean and David were perfect guests. They were traveling through out France and having the time of their lives. I'm lucky they chose my gite for their stay. I would love to see them again and again in the following years.

Beautiful stone house with pool in pretty village.

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in this comfortable and nicely appointed house in the peaceful village of St Julien. The owner was on-site while we were there and he wae charming and could not have been more helpful. It was very hot when we stayed and it was wonderful to plunge into the delightful garden pool. The nearby village of Cenac supplied all our needs and all the great sites of that part of the Dordogne were within easy reach. A great location which we would recommend to our friends and would love to revisit.
