Overview

About the property

4 bedroom, 2 bathroom, luxury 'home from home' in the city centre

Edinburgh is one of the world’s most beautiful and iconic destinations in the world. Built in 1805, this beautiful and elegant four bedroom apartment is located in the ‘East Village’ of the New Town.

Recently transformed by Edinburgh's well known interior designer, Emily Black, the Forbes’ Residence has a stylish, contemporary Scottish theme and can accommodate up to eight adults.

This luxurious ‘home from home’ has original stripped Canadian wooden floors, detailed cornicing, a flagstone kitchen and beautiful fireplaces. It offers a glimpse of life as a 19th century wealthy merchant - a fine example of Georgian architecture at its very best.

From the pewter stag’s head in the drawing room, to the salmon fish wallpaper in the kitchen and the 'touch of thistles' adorning the spacious accommodation, ambiance and a sense of history pour out of every nook and cranny in this 18th century building which was previously home to Scottish artist Anne Redpath.

Located just a few minutes walk away from the historic city centre, visitors have easy access to the many cultural, shopping and restaurant delights that Edinburgh has to offer. Beyond the city itself, there are world-renowned golf courses, beautiful coastal villages and stunning countryside.

About Hannah Forbes

Gordon was born and raised in Edinburgh. Hannah is from England, but spent many years living in Kenya and South Africa. We have three wonderful children, two of whom are at university, with one still at school.

Hannah Forbes purchased this apartment in 2007

Why Hannah Forbes chose Edinburgh

We decided to buy a second home and spent two weekends seeing more than 50 properties. The minute we walked through the door we knew that this was the one for us. It is beautifully proportioned with 14' ceilings, retains many original features, is in a beautiful Georgian building, and located in the wonderful East End of the city with walking distance to everything. We never use a car when we are there, and feel immersed in the fabric of the city.

We use the apartment often ourselves, but also love that we can share it with our discerning visitors.

What makes this apartment unique

This is far from a typical holiday rental. It is a gorgeous, top quality, much-loved second home.

You will forgive us for asking about your group before a booking is confirmed. We want to ensure that our apartment is well looked after, and ask all our guests to be respectful of the other residents in the building who live there permanently are all lovely people.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We are most grateful for you allowing us to rent your home for a week. It is a magical place and we loved it. Everything was in perfect order. Yours, in thanks.

Very beautiful design apartment in the centre of Edinburgh

  • 5 of 5

We had a family trip and spent five nights in this lovely apartment in the centre of Edinburgh. The location is really great - very central in the area full of Georgian styled buildings. The rooms look exactly like the photos - beautifully designed, decorated with taste, luxurious and super clean. Kitchen is fully equipped with everything we needed. The communication with the owner or staff went smoothly. There has always been a fast reply, whenever we asked any questions. Checking in was also fast, easy and very welcoming. Thanks for hosting us.

Hectic week at the fringe but the flat was beautiful and comfortable to come home to every night

Owner's Response: Thanks Karen. Most of our guests are out and about exploring Edinburgh during the day, then home for a rest, and out again to one of the fantastic restaurants. Or a night in with their feet up! We love making recommentations about places to go.

Lovely spacious apartment, great location

  • 5 of 5

Great for us, family of 4 plus one gf, perfect location for a week at the Fringe. Away from the bustle of the Old Town and with plenty of great places around and a short walk to Princes Street to get into the heart of the action.

Spacious and Graceful

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful find! We had the privilege of staying at this wonderful flat with 3 other couples. We never felt crowded as there was plenty of room for spreading out and for privacy. The decor is top notch and the interface with the owner and caretaker was easy and timely.

We hope to return again soon!

Located literally a few minutes walk away from the historic city centre, visitors have easy access to the many cultural, shopping and restaurant delights that Edinburgh has to offer. Beyond the city itself, there are world-renowned golf courses, beautiful coastal villages and stunning countryside.

Edinburgh is a food-lovers’ heaven with many iconic restaurants. The city boasts an incredible 7 Michelin-starred restaurants. These include Tom Kitchen’s establishments, Martin Wishart’s Leith ventures, amazing food at the Balmoral No 1 location at the East End of Princes Street, and the newly refurbished Waldorf Astoria Caledonian Hotel offering the Galvin brothers’ food at the West End. Beyond this there are hundreds of amazing restaurants to try within a 15 minute walk of the Forbes’ Residence.

If you enjoy shopping and wish to sample the café culture, it is all on your doorstep. Harvey Nichols, the iconic Jenners store (an Edinburgh institution!), Multrees Walk with its plethora of designer shops, the gorgeous George Street, and Princes Street which houses all of the ‘high street’ shops. You can easily walk to them all.

And if that is not enough, just soak up the beauty and history of Edinburgh: the castle, standing proudly over the city; superb theatres, galleries, churches and monuments holding secrets from past centuries; the eclectic mix of residents from local and international students attracted by the world class university, to well-heeled locals who are deeply proud of their city.

If you are looking to sample some of the most magnificent golf courses in the country that is the home of golf, you will be spoilt for choice. Gleneagles - venue for the 2014 Ryder Cup - is located an hour’s drive away in the beautiful setting of the Perthshire countryside. Closer to home, there are many magnificent courses available in East Lothian, Edinburgh’s ‘Hamptons’, with access to the American-owned Renaissance Club bordering – and bettering! – Muirfield, the home of the 2013 Open Golf Championship.

Then there is the Edinburgh International Festival in August and September. The city comes alive with an influx of visitors from all over the world for the main festival, its Fringe and Comedy relatives, and the growing book, jazz, film and music festivals. You can also experience the delights of Hogmanay, Scotland’s own New Year’s Eve party that attracts global audiences as one of the four most iconic venues to spend Christmas/New Year alongside Sydney, New York and London.
