An excellent apartment in an excellent destination

  • 5 of 5

After a late arrival on the bus from Avignonon a Tuesday evening, Shirley met us at the Esplanade bus stop.

On our 10 minute walk to the apartment Shirley pointed out ome of the features of the town and described its basic layout being the old town encircled by the "business Boulevard ". We only had a vague idea where the apartment was localed and were delighted when we approached the front door to the Duchy tower.

"This is the door to the stair to your apartment." -Wow!

Up the stone spiral stair struggling with our bags and into the first floor apartment.

The apartment is some 50 - 60 m2 with a separate generous bedroom, separate toilet and bathroom and a kitchen alcove off the main living dining area. The main room is spacious with the living and dining areas separated cleverly by furnishings. The apartment is well appointed with all sorts of bits and pieces to make a holiday.

And all of this is secondary ---!!!

Out the "Juliette balcony" doors is the vista of a town square which adjoins the main town square ("place du herbes"). This square houses 4 indoor / oudoor restaurants / cafes as well as a coupl of clothes boutiques and an Art Gallery.Just around the corner is the main town square where there are probably 10 indoor / outdoor restaurants and more boutiques............. and then the village markets.. in the 14 days that we stayed in Uzes, there were 7 markets; the weekly Wednesday produce market, the weekly Saturday everything market, a Sunday plant and flower market, a Sunday antique bricerac market and a Thursday art and craft market.

The apartment is unique as it is part of the historic fabric of the old town with its round tower and what looks like the remnants of ramparts of the old structure.

Surounding the apartment and in easy walking distance are all of the ancient palaces and monuments and the apartment is part of it all.

Uzes, as a destination is brilliant with its medieval ambience and ancient Roman relics nearby. The presence of the great and world famous viaduct, part of the 50 klm Roman aquaduct is brilliant; however, a short energetic walk down the hill from Uzes leads you to the source of the water and the start of the constructed Roman aquaduct. It is also roumered curently that the medieval town of Uzes is actually siting on the site of an ancient Roman city.

AND the weather at the time of our visit (late May) was great - not to hot and not too cold, no rain and lots of spring flowers and bright green leaves.

Top apartment

  • 5 of 5

We were very pleased with the position and the space of the apartment. Shirley was very helpful, meeting us on arrival and checking before we left. We were very close to the markets, shops, castle of the duke. We found the bus services to Avignon and Nimes very convenient. There were plenty of eating and food places in the town and a nice relaxed feeling in the town.

We have no hesitation in recommending Uzes as a place to visit and Shirley's apartment as a place to stay.

An apartment in beautiful, downtown Uzes

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent a wonderful week in this comfortable apartment very near the Place Aux Herbs. Shirley was helpful in getting us oriented and set up. We tried many of the restaurants and wine bars. Uzes is a truly lovely place, and it was.fun to explore its many shops and streets. We shall return!

Special location in the centre of old town Uzes.

  • 5 of 5

The property was equipped with every convenience you could wish for.

Shirley was a pleasure to meet.

She helped us to hire a car, which is a difficult task when both you and the car dealer aren't able to communicate sufficiently.

Wonderful location, right in the middle of Saturday markets.

Lovely apartment in a perfect location

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time renting the Dampmartin apartment within two years, which is a recommendation in itself! The apartment is spacious and charming and feels like home. It is well equipped with everything you'll need and bonus points--the bed is super comfortable. Shirley is exceptionally generous is providing coffee, tea, wine, etc. and other basic provisions for her arriving guests. The location in the pedestrianized town centre is absolutely perfect-- far enough off the Place aux Herbes to be quiet, especially at night, but only a two minute walk to the cafes and restaurants. Parking in the nearby secure "Gide" parkade was very convenient and we appreciated that we never needed to worry about finding a place to park, even on market days. We enjoyed our dealings with Shirley and found her to be flexible and very accommodating. She does her best to ensure guests are comfortable and she obviously takes pride in providing such a lovely apartment. It's a gem.

An Excellent Way to Visit Uzes

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in Shirley's fine apartment in Uzes. L.R.'s review covered its many desireable features, and we'd echo its praises. We'd add that living in the heart of this historic settlement with its excellent markets, butchers, green grocers and wine shops, and having the benefit of Shirley's thoughtfully provisioned kitchen, we had a wonderful experience cooking local and eating in style. The apartment instantly became home.

Location

Activity and Interests

Car: not necessary

This Romantic apartment is in the centre of Uzes on the 1st floor of a beautiful 16th / 17th Century house, close to the Place aux Herbs - with it's famous Saturday Market and a Bio market every Wednesday . Also close to River walks and the countryside. Uzes has a good selection of restaurants. A cathedral and a châteaux ---- also a cinema (often V.0).

If you are arriving by car , the underground car park just on the boulevard provides an excellent service - with security - Around 50 Euros for a week . The apartment is just a short walk away - but away from the noise of the traffic. There is also an excellent bus service from Nimes or Avingnon for around 2 Euros -- if you do not wish to bring a car. This excellent service takes you to most of the local villages -- and the famous Point du Gaurd - the enormous aqueduct that took the water from the local source in Uzes to Nimes -- because the Romans needed more water for their baths. Nimes was a huge military fortress at the time , and worth a visit as there are many remaining ancient monuments and sites -- including the arena.

Avingnon is also a must -- with it's annual drama festival - and of course a visit to the Pope's Palace and it's famous bridge . Also there are many delightful villages around Uzes well worth a visit -- just a short ride away by bus --- or car!

For me the most beautiful and special part of staying or living in Uzes is walking into the square and watching the light from the sun pass through the trees onto the beautiful 17th / 18th Century Architecture that surrounds it -- Just sit by the fountain and take it all in. On a late Summer's after noon or spring morning -- one could pass many an hour there in complete contentment!
