An apartment in beautiful, downtown Uzes

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent a wonderful week in this comfortable apartment very near the Place Aux Herbs. Shirley was helpful in getting us oriented and set up. We tried many of the restaurants and wine bars. Uzes is a truly lovely place, and it was.fun to explore its many shops and streets. We shall return!

Special location in the centre of old town Uzes.

  • 5 of 5

The property was equipped with every convenience you could wish for.

Shirley was a pleasure to meet.

She helped us to hire a car, which is a difficult task when both you and the car dealer aren't able to communicate sufficiently.

Wonderful location, right in the middle of Saturday markets.

Lovely apartment in a perfect location

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time renting the Dampmartin apartment within two years, which is a recommendation in itself! The apartment is spacious and charming and feels like home. It is well equipped with everything you'll need and bonus points--the bed is super comfortable. Shirley is exceptionally generous is providing coffee, tea, wine, etc. and other basic provisions for her arriving guests. The location in the pedestrianized town centre is absolutely perfect-- far enough off the Place aux Herbes to be quiet, especially at night, but only a two minute walk to the cafes and restaurants. Parking in the nearby secure "Gide" parkade was very convenient and we appreciated that we never needed to worry about finding a place to park, even on market days. We enjoyed our dealings with Shirley and found her to be flexible and very accommodating. She does her best to ensure guests are comfortable and she obviously takes pride in providing such a lovely apartment. It's a gem.

An Excellent Way to Visit Uzes

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in Shirley's fine apartment in Uzes. L.R.'s review covered its many desireable features, and we'd echo its praises. We'd add that living in the heart of this historic settlement with its excellent markets, butchers, green grocers and wine shops, and having the benefit of Shirley's thoughtfully provisioned kitchen, we had a wonderful experience cooking local and eating in style. The apartment instantly became home.

A great little apartment, beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

I've loved Uzes and its rural surroundings for a while. Uzes is a living town with a harmonious mix of across-the-centuries architecture (the 12th C. Tour Fenestrelle, the ducal palace, the Place aux Herbes market and its arches, the tree-lined boulevard ring,...).

The apartment is right in historic, pedestrian Uzes. I've stayed nearby a lot, and I can say that, though many parts of this region are charmed, the experience of living next door to the ducal palace is different from anything else you can do. You're not a 5 minute drive from the focal point, not a 5 minute walk, you're in it. Walking out the door into this living movie set engages the imagination in quite a different way than approaching it from even a few blocks away. One window opens onto a popular square, another on the quiet, winding streets near the palace. The access to the apartment is up a narrow staircase in a castle-like tower of Uzesian pale stone, and inside, the apartment is comfortable, nice looking, feels like a home.

Of course, the distinctiveness of the place means that my 'pro' might be someone else's 'con'. For example, the central location means some sounds (people, live music sometimes). (The back bedroom is quiet.) And while climbing up to the apartment was a delight (elevators weren't conspicuous in16th-C. Uzes and they aren't that now), pack lightly.

The place is well equipped - I didn't need to go out for even a band-aid. Wifi, pots, glasses for all occasions, coffee, spices, olive oil... candles, good books, maps. But, since needs differ, please check the amenities list. I didn't miss a washing machine -- I enjoyed taking my laundry right across a still deserted early morning Place aux Herbes.

A big part of the charm of living in Uzes is the incongruity of doing normal tasks in such a beautiful, historic setting. The mundane becomes interesting. I loved going out for bread, I loved having morning coffee on the boulevard. But I think I most loved taking out the trash... The neat little chutes that are there for this purpose were reached by the most picturesque walks. (I took my trash to the ducal palace.) In other words, until the duke starts advertising on this site, this place is as central as you can get. (And the quality to price ratio is much better!)

Everything from first contact to departure works perfectly, and Shirley goes beyond the professional to make sure you're happy.

A huge thanks, Shirley, for an unforgettable time.

Location

Activity and Interests

Car: not necessary

This Romantic apartment is in the centre of Uzes on the 1st floor of a beautiful 16th / 17th Century house, close to the Place aux Herbs - with it's famous Saturday Market and a Bio market every Wednesday . Also close to River walks and the countryside. Uzes has a good selection of restaurants. A cathedral and a châteaux ---- also a cinema (often V.0).

If you are arriving by car , the underground car park just on the boulevard provides an excellent service - with security - Around 50 Euros for a week . The apartment is just a short walk away - but away from the noise of the traffic. There is also an excellent bus service from Nimes or Avingnon for around 2 Euros -- if you do not wish to bring a car. This excellent service takes you to most of the local villages -- and the famous Point du Gaurd - the enormous aqueduct that took the water from the local source in Uzes to Nimes -- because the Romans needed more water for their baths. Nimes was a huge military fortress at the time , and worth a visit as there are many remaining ancient monuments and sites -- including the arena.

Avingnon is also a must -- with it's annual drama festival - and of course a visit to the Pope's Palace and it's famous bridge . Also there are many delightful villages around Uzes well worth a visit -- just a short ride away by bus --- or car!

For me the most beautiful and special part of staying or living in Uzes is walking into the square and watching the light from the sun pass through the trees onto the beautiful 17th / 18th Century Architecture that surrounds it -- Just sit by the fountain and take it all in. On a late Summer's after noon or spring morning -- one could pass many an hour there in complete contentment!
