An incredible view of the Campo dei Frari with canal view
The first time, when I opened the entrance door I was overwhelmed by a view that I had not expected: in front of me the Gothic church of the Frari and the campo surrounded by beautiful buildings. I was a spectator of a magnificent picture!
The dining room and one of the two bedrooms enjoy the same spectacular views with a slightly different perspective by 7 windows. Also the back of the flat enjoys a good view of a wide and airy campiello and you can see the internal courtyard of palazzo Zen.
The apartment is overlooking a canal and it is in the Frari area. This area is well provided with shops, a supermarket, bakery, patisseries and ice cream parlours, chemists too should you need it. In the neighbourhood you will find many bars, restaurants and the big open air Rialto market is only 10 minutes walk away, I suggest you should go even if you do not intend to buy anything.
A few metres from the flats you have the vaporetto (water bus) landing stage from where you can reach any place in town, but nearby there is also the gondola traghetto (shuttle) that allows you to cross the Grand Canal with only two euros and in ten minutes you can reach San Marco Square.
On foot you can reach the Accademia art gallery or the railway station in 15 minutes. Campo Santa Margherita is where the youth of Venice gather and it is easy to reach.
As you can understand the Frari area is at the very centre of the Venice tourist landmarks, but unlike other places does not suffer the same chaotic human traffic.
When I saw this apartment it was “love at first sight”. Then, little by little, I discovered its secrets; the interior feels a part of the Campo dei Frari. The sunlight, the colours at sunset, the sounds of the people, the gondoliers‘ chatting and the music of the street performers keep you company, but they are never too invasive, and at night it is tranquil. You have the impression of being in the middle of a Goldoni play as privileged spectators.
A famous French writer lived in this apartment for over ten years. She told me that unwillingly she had to go back to Paris because her job is to write books about people, but she liked living in this flat so much that she never went out and lost touch with the people. She preferred to watch from the large windows everything that was happening in the campo, "like being at the theatre".
Before her the flat was occupied by a German gentleman who invented table games.
I have noticed that those who come here say that they feel well in this place, I like to think that it is a reflection of the positive energy of the people who lived here before.
Interior design is one of my passions and in this case I had to make sure that the external view was predominant.
As time goes by I have become more and more tired of the fake style of the 1700s you see everywhere, I wanted to do something different but still using Venetian features.
I wanted to give a new life to pieces of furniture that had already a story of their own.
The French lady had left me sone Murano chandeliers and two pieces of furniture in wood as dark as the doors. I started to paint the walls and the doors white and to stencil the two pieces of furniture with the skyline of Venice Grand Canal in 1700s.
I transformed the chandeliers into upright lamps.I reupholstered the settees like the old fashioned mattresses, in fine natural linen, brightened by orange cushions.
I enlarged a photo that I had taken of water reflections and put it under glass and there it was, transformed in a small table between the settees. I bleached an old Persian rug and dyed it into a pink salmon colour, I also put a few pieces of antiques here and there to give warmth to the ambience.
I built the two sitting room lamps like two clouds of white material and for a more intimate light there are the Murano lamps. On the walls covered by unique photographs, taken by the official photographer of the Venice film festival: Andrea Vezzù; they link everything together.
I like to sit on the small terrace sipping prosecco and watching the sunset through the old glass windows of the church. I can understand the French writer, this flat charms you and you do not feel like going out.
The light is incredible in this flat, a very difficult feature to find in Venice where the houses are close to each other and you can hardly ever see the sun.
The flat is south facing and this is why the large red canvas blinds are indispensable.
Every room has air conditioning.
The kitchen has a large fridge and it is well equipped (also for cooking lessons).
At home you’ll find guides with recommended shops, bars and restaurants.
If the owner is available, previous arrangement, it is possible to follow free cooking lessons.
The final cleaning and wireless connection is included.

We had the most wonderful stay in this apartment, with my mum and my 11 year old daughter and I was at my happiest just sitting in the window watching the world go by in the Campo below. Giulia is lovely and helpful and we booked Ada to cook for us one evening which was an incredible experience. I wouldn't hesitate to come back or recommend this apartment, although I'd also like it to be my little secret!
INCREDIBLE apartment - and wonderful hostess. Our 30th Anniversary trip to Venice followed by a stay in the Prosecco region is over. A magical time for us - and our children (26 and 27). We will return ..... THank you, Guilia!
This was the perfect spot for our vacation, with a family of four with 2 kids (13/10). Guilia was a fantastic host and the apartment and location were great. I know the location might be a question to folks, but it was so nice to get out of the main tourist spots and relax. Sipping wine over looking a small piazza on the balcony was sublime. A/C in each room was huge!!! The only reason for 4/5 was hot water issues, but, it's Italy... who needs to take long showers. After a trip to Sicily in a huge villa we all longed for Venice and The House of Sun! PS - I'll say again, Guilia was great!
The house of dreams!
Excellent location! - away from very busy touristy places but a short pleasant walk to main attractions and less than 5 min to a vaporetto stop. The apartment is very big with astonishing view and has everything to have a comfortable stay: fast wifi, dishwasher, washer/dryer, AC, plenty towels, blankets and comfortable beds. It faces the plaza with the magnificent basilica St. Maria dell Frari with masterpieces, must to visit!
The owner Giulia was very kind to meet me at the station. She prepared a binder with a lot of useful information about restaurants, sightseeing and neighborhood. She helped to arrange the activities such as a boat ride, that was awesome, and a specially cooked for us traditional Italian dinner.
The place is beyond description!
This apartment is absolutely lovely!
The apartment is in a fantastic location - away from the crowds but close enough to get to all the major attractions quickly. The big problem was dragging ourselves away from the apartment and the view of the piazza. Giulia is the perfect hostess - the recommendations in her extensive advice booklet were universally excellent.
If you are looking for a quiet refuge from the hectic crowds - look no further than this apartment.
This is the ONE!
I can't say enough on how much I enjoyed my stay at Julia's apartment. It was perfect and here's why:
Julia is lovely and couldn't do enough to make sure we were comfortable. She was helpful in guiding a water taxi to proper location due to our poor Italian and poor American cell service. She advised us on restaurants and activities.
The apartment was spacious, immaculate and fun to be in. The view of Frari Church was AWESOME and the location is so great. It’s in the middle of Venice away from St Mark's Square which kept us from heavy crowds when we were winding down. The apartment is close to the Vapparetto station and was perfectly situated right down the block from a grocery store. We wanted to fully enjoy Venice and not just stop in for a day...we spent a week in this apartment and loved every minute of it.
There were four women celebrating a 50th birthday and enjoying a girls vacation. We hired the chef that Julia recommended to come into the apt 1 night and cook for us. The chef, Ada, was amazing and was a highlight of our trip. Two of the women in my party met the chef at the Rialto Market and they picked out food for the meal that she was cooking for us. What an amazing experience.
Best of all, the mattresses were AWESOME. I rent homes all over the world. A bad mattress can ruin a vacation. These were perfect. The kitchen was stocked with enough paper towels and toilet paper. VERY clean!!!! The only thing I wish we had done is asked for specific directions on how to use the washing machine and dryer. We don't read or speak Italian so we couldn't take advantage of the washer because we couldn't read directions. If it were important, we could have called the owner and she would have showed us. We didn't because we were too busy having fun. STAY here, you won't regret it.
Activity and Interests
visit the secret itineraries in the Doge's Palace and have a unforgetable immagine of the Basilica San Marco illuminated from inside (by 11:30 to 12:30) is a must. For the sports people I suggest a row in a typical venetian rowing boat with Jane. Other way to know the spirit of our place is to partecipate to a traditional fishing in the lagoon. If you intend to move out of Venice for few hours, i suggest to visit Valsanzibio, one of the best european garden.
