About the property

La Pairiere 6 bedrooms, sleeps 5 - 14.

Located within nearly 1 hectare of gardens is the 19th century stone building, La Pairiere. Beautifully renovated to include today's modern luxuries, but conserving it's old world charm.

Spend the long summer evenings enjoying a glass of wine in the stoned courtyard, take bike rides along the Mayenne stopping to re-fuel on the wonderful crepes in Grez Neuville or simply take time to relax in the tranquil surrounds of the property taking in some of the most beautiful scenery the French countryside has to offer.

La Pairiere is located in the broad valley of the Mayenne River, shortly before it flows into the Loire. It is the area the French call 'la douce France.' The nearby countryside rolls gently from forested slopes dotted with châteaux to fields ablaze in season with sunflower, rapeseed and grains; from rich riverside pastures and the occasional orchard to quaint villages roofed in the region's distinguishing slate tiles.

A particular local delight is the riverside drive (or cycle or walk - the slopes are not daunting) along the picturesque routes des écluses, which connect the lock villages. One of our favorite meals out is here - simple crêpes and local cider on a river terrace at nearby Grez-Neuville, a lock village that also serves as a base for tourist boats, some of which are available for hire by the half-day and day. An array of local markets allows you to treat you taste buds to wonderful fresh produce, and there is no end to the list of places to visit, whether it be château, museums, medieval towns or even the mystical sounds of the Gregorian monks chanting in the abbey at solemmes.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I have just spent 8 wonderful days at La Prairie with friends and family from Australia, the UK and even a local couple from Angers. The house is HUGE, with more than enough beds (which were extremely comfortable!) for everyone and plenty of towels. We loved the kitchen - spending most of our waking time in the house either around the table playing games, eating fabulous local produce and (being Aussies) drinking! The fire in the loungeroom kept us all toasty warm, while we lazed around and did what you do best on holidays....NOTHING! Local boulangerie was a couple of minute drive away, as well as an amazing auberge in St Martin du Bois. We got lost one day and ended up at a farm shop selling locally churned salted butter, apples, cidre, cheeses and wines - love getting lost that way! The creperie in Nue Greville was another highlight - try the goats cheese, honey and cumin gallette - wow! The couple from Angers are so entranced with the property and surrounds that they are going to have their wedding there in a few years! High praise, and another reason for us to go back!

Charming French country stay

  • 4 of 5

La Pairiere is a substantial old farmhouse which retains the rustic charm of days gone by while accommodating modern family tastes and needs. The kitchen is large and welcoming for a big family or group of friends and the outside tables extend this feeling in warm weather. The bedrooms are all large, simply and comfortably furnished, and the beds are definitely much more comfortable than the French mattresses of old! Waking up to a view through the French windows of the small chateau across the fields was one of the great joys of our stay here - which I am sure will not be our last.

Large property in rural France.

  • 3 of 5

The property was very large giving enough space for my parents, my husband and I, and are 2 children. We were able to have enough space to be separate with my family sleeping downstairs and my parents upstairs, and this worked well.

There was lots for us to do in the local area: 5 mins away we hired bikes at Jaille Yvon and cycled along the Mayenne, went to Lac du Maine beach lake near Angers (30 mins), Angers itself, huge outlet shopping centre on the way to Angers, and the children (aged 4 and 18 months) loved Refuge de L'Arche in Chateau Gontier (15 minutes).

We had some lovely barbecues at the property and could spread ourselves around the huge garden.

Please be advised that there is nowhere within walking distance and so you would need a car, even for the boulangerie.

Lovely farmhouse with a beautiful garden

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time at La Pairiere and I can wholly recommend it.

We stayed in the main farmhouse (the smaller converted barn was being renovated at the time), which is wonderful and spacious -- very traditional downstairs, with a big kitchen and living room, plus several bedrooms, and with a converted second floor/loft which has a lovely main bedroom with en-suite bathroom, plus two other bedrooms (one of which of daughter slept in) and loads of toys and books for kids, so great for families.

One of the best features of the place is the big garden -- loads of space for kids to run around, play football etc, cows in the neighboring field which was also a big thrill for our four-year old, plus a nice little copse of trees in the middle of the garden providing a bit of shade and great for having outdoor lunches -- it really is idyllic, my partner and I were reminiscing about this just the other day!

In terms of area, you're at the western edge of the Loire Valley, which means some of the more popular chateaus are a bit of a trek for a day trip. But there are still plenty like Langeais within easy reach, plus the very nice town of Angers, which is worth a visit. And to be honest, you will probably want to spend a fair bit of time simply relaxing at La Pairiere.

Agréable propriété familiale

  • 4 of 5

  • 1 of 5

La Pairière is 800 meters from the village of Montguillon, which has a small restaurant/bar and shop, and where bikes can be rented. The nearest supermarket is at St Martin du Bois (5km) with a much larger choice of shopping, markets and restaurants at Château-Gontier and le Lion d 'Angers (both 11km). Angers and its department stores, museums and TGV station is just 31 kilometers. You could easily spend a week or more discovering the châteaux of the Mayenne - often more charming than their more grandiose Loire neighbors - and finding such hidden treasures as the sublime chanting of the monks at the Abbaye de Solesmes. Further afield, the cathedral of Chartres, the car museum of Le Mans, the mysterious stone monoliths of Morbihan, the coastline of Brittany and all the châteaux of the Loire are just some of the famous attractions within easy day touring range.
