Beautiful property, but..........

  • 3 of 5

Fabulous property, wonderful facilities and gorgeous interior but sadly poorly maintained. The garden was full of weeds, the dishwasher did not clean the dishes (washing up after 12 was a real chore when we were hoping for a relaxing break), the crockery and glasses were plentiful but terribly chipped and truthfully need replacing. One shower leaked into the bedroom. The decking around the pool was truly dangerous, as were the steps leading to the house (concerning as my parents are in their 80's). The matresses on one double bed were too big and resulted in the people sleeping in it with the feeling of falling off the edge. We had a fabulous time but do hope the owners/agent take these comments on board and sort these issues out,

Things to know about the bedrooms before you book.

  • 3 of 5

We booked this gite because we wanted 7 bedrooms and this looked ideal. However, we wouldn't have booked it had we known the following...

2 of the bedrooms are in the basement with windows above head height, and when it has been wet (which apparently it had) these rooms are very damp. We avoided using one because 2 adults in our party chose to share one of the upstairs rooms instead. But we couldn't avoid using the other and despite having the de-humidifier on all day every day, the room was still very damp.

Also, the other basement room has only about 5 inches of clearance between one foot end corner of the bed and the wall which would make it very awkward to walk around. And the one bedside light provided cannot be plugged in as there is no socket on the bedhead wall.

One of the upstairs rooms is in fact a double bed on a raised plinth off the corridor to the master suite, The only privacy it has from this corridor is a muslin curtain that can be drawn across the foot of the bed.

Bedroom arrangements apart, the gite is great. Fabulous outside area for sitting and dining, beautiful view across the fields, lovely pool. Functional kitchen, huge dining room and comfortable lounge.

We had fun canoeing on the Loire at Sancerre, had a fantastic evening meal at Le Delice des Galets in Toucy, enjoyed a lovely lunch in Le Moulin des Corneil at Mezille, wine tasted in Sancerre and browsed and shopped at the Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire market.

Belle prestation

  • 4 of 5

People and Places of Renown

Home of Colette and Pierre Larousse, La Puisaye-Forterre features numerous sites and buildings related to its eventful past. The cultural heritage is preserved and varied and has many surprises in store for history, art, culture and nature lovers. Take the time to explore the many facets of Puisaye-Forterre.

Colette (1873-1954)

Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye, the birthplace of Colette, hosts a museum fully dedicated to the writer’s life and work. Visitors are invited into Colette’s poetic and sensual world. Not far from the museum, the house where she was born is being renovated but is not open for visits yet.

A Wealth of Potters

La Puisaye has a longstanding tradition in pottery. Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye is the cradle of this craft and is known as the “pottery villlage” and has been awarded the official “Ville et Métiers d’Art” label (City and Fine Crafts). Other villages such as Treigny, Lain or Moutiers are also home to artist workshops, exhibitions, training courses. The Puisaye Art and History Museum also has a section dedicated to ceramics.

Ochre and Wall Paintings

Due to the abundance of ochre locally, outstanding wall paintings are a feature of many of the churches. These wall paintings, dating from the twelfth to the nineteenth century, are a valuable witness to the lifestyles and beliefs of these periods. Thirteen villages have set up a network to highlight this cultural heritage.

The Aubigny Underground Quarry

This exceptional, beautifully lit up site is an “upside down cathedral”, the result of thousands of years of stone-quarrying. The Opera House and Town Hall in Paris, for instance, have been built with this particular quarried stone. Discover the craft of quarrying, a true witness to our past but also a tribute to more recent craftsmanship such as the guild of stone cutters (Compagnons) and stone carver’s work on heritage sites.

Guédelon

Deep in secluded woodland, an abandoned quarry reveals a landscape seemingly untouched since the dawn of the last millennium. Out of this wood and stone, using thirteenth century building techniques, a castle is being created. An amazing enterprise that will take a quarter of a century to complete.

The Ratilly Castle

The Ratilly castle, built in the thirteenth century, was remodelled and enhanced during the Renaissance, in particular with the addition of a beautiful pigeon loft. This charming fortress surrounded by moats has accommodated a pottery workshop since 1951 and regularly hosts high quality cultural events.

The Druyes Castle

This “Philippian” type castle from the twelfth century was the residence of the counts of Auxerre and Nevers. It is erected on a hill overlooking the picturesque village of Druyes-les-Belles-Fontaines: Romanesque church, crystal clear springs and a superb wash house. The medieval houses are preserved in the upper town. Summer is particularly active with theatre, concerts, exhibitions, artist workshops.

The Saint Fargeau Castle

An imposing red brick castle from the fifteenth century which opens up into an elegant courtyard redesigned by Le Vau in the seventeenth century. The amazing tour of the castle’s roof structure follows the visit of the furnished apartments. A “Sound and Light” pageant completes the sightseeing tour.

Art and Culture

A large number of artists have settled in La Puisaye-Forterre. Many art and exhibition centres are open all year round: Regional Contemporary Art Centre, the Métairie Bruyère’s Graphic Arts Centre, Acanthe Sphere, Artists in Puisaye,…

Omnipresent Nature

Unspoilt and flourishing nature is part of the charm of our countryside: Arch-shaped vegetation canopies, natural ponds, well-maintained trails, panoramic views. You can also watch animals in the wild at the wildlife park in Boutissaint.
