About the property

4 Double Bedrooms 3 bathrooms Detached House Swimming Pool wifi

Completely renovated this typically French house has been used in the past as a schoolhouse and was formerly the Mairie for St Hippolyte de Montaigu (old town hall). There is space to park two large cars in front of the house. Adjacent is the old Mairie car park which has plenty of space for parking and now mostly doubles as a large pétanque pitch! The front garden has a table with chairs and a parasol. The house has a salon, a kitchen/dining room, four double bedrooms and three shower/bathrooms, (one bedroom and shower room is situated on the ground floor). The salon has a large LCD TV and working fireplace. There is an airy kitchen/dining room with double doors opening onto a patio with a table seating 8, complete with parasol. The kitchen is fully equipped with range cooker, American style fridge freezer, dishwasher & microwave. There is a washing machine in the laundry room which is accessed from the front garden. At the end of the kitchen there is a short corridor leading to a double bedroom (4) with wardrobe and a bathroom equipped with walk in shower, hand basin and toilet. The bedroom also has double doors that open onto the patio. From the hallway the original stone stair case rises to the 1st floor where there are three further bedrooms and two shower/bathrooms. The master bedroom (1) has a large built in wardrobe and an en-suite bathroom with toilet, washbasin and walk in shower. There are two twin bedrooms (2+3) with wardrobes, which share the third bathroom with a combined bath/shower, toilet and washbasin. At the back of the house there is a patio, gated 8 x 4m swimming pool and gravelled garden. Wi Fi box located in office/hall. 2 baby cots and a high chair also available. The village has a small shop within a short walk from the house which sells fresh fruit, vegetables and bread.

About Marco and Sarah

British doctor and nurse.

Marco and Sarah purchased this house in 2012

Why Marco and Sarah chose Saint-Hippolyte-de-Montaigu

We were looking in the Uzes area - beautiful unspoilt French town with easy plane/train access. Sarah saw the house on the internet and fell in love with it. By the time we got to Uzes the British owners had taken it off the market and we had to persuade them to show us around and re-consider selling it. The house surpassed our web-based expectations and we were lucky enough to buy it.

What makes this house unique

L'Anciennce Mairie is a beautiful building. If the shutters are kept closed the thick walls ensure that the interior stays cool in the summer and the efficient central heating keeps it warm in the winter. During summer activity is largely centred around the patio and swimming pool but the salon and garden provide quiet areas for reading etc. The swimming pool has 4 easy access wide steps at the shallow end which are very useful for small children or adults who have difficulty using a standard bathing ladder. Uzes is a hidden gem situated in the Gard not far from Avignon and Provence. A lovely small historic town with numerous cafes and restaurants. It's a great place to wind down and relax.

Great place in a perfect location

  • 4 of 5

The property itself was fabulous with big spacious rooms and high ceilings. The decor was simplistic and in-keeping with the rustic nature of the property. Because it was all stone floors and walls and beamed ceilings it kept the place relatively cool in the hot summer climate which was very welcome. Furnishings were of good taste and it pretty much had everything we needed. Beds were comfortable and the fans in the bedrooms were a welcome addition to keep things cooler at night. The pool was well maintained being cleaned twice a week but because of the surrounding trees and shrubbery we had to do a little cleaning ourselves after stong winds.

The location was perfect, away from the hustle and bustle of the bigger town, that being Uzes but within easy reach for evening meals dining out and the Market days on Saturday and Wednesday. The Saturday market was huge and well worth a visit as is just strolling around the cobbled streets, nooks and crannies. I would also recommend the Chateau at Usez and of course any or all of the surrounding wineries for tasting or picnic/tour. The little villages near by were also wonderful so I would highly recommend you taking time out to visit some of them.

The Grottes de Salamander were pretty spectacular and if you are brave enough then i would recommend the 50m abseil into the cavern below. I always say a trip to france is not complete without a canoe down a river so take a trip to the famous Pont Du Gard and take a canoe down the river and under the viaduct.

All in all we had an amazing time and the property was a big plus in achieving that.

Thanks to the owners and Emma in helping us have such a fabulous vacation.

A great family holiday in a lovely family house

  • 5 of 5

The pool was wonderful for our two grandsons, 5 & 6. We had all our meals on the covered patio. Four roomy bedrooms, great bathrooms and a large, well equipped kitchen. Sitting room enormous, though little used! The boys loved walking to the small, but well stocked shop in the village for their croissants and pain au chocolate each morning.

A delightful stay for 8 of us.

Dreamy, Provencal home

  • 5 of 5

My family and I enjoyed a most relaxing week in what can only be described as one of the most beautiful regions of France in the most delightful house.

Our host and contact was helpful and on hand to help with questions. The house itself was simply charming, the photographs do not do it justice; lovely kitchen which was well stocked and lovely modern bathrooms. The pool area was especially lovely.

The area itself was very quiet and pretty with beautiful Uzes a 10 minute drive away. The house was also well located for drives to Nimes and St Remy and other wonderful sites. I would highly recommend this house and hope to return again.

Lovely house and a great holiday

  • 5 of 5

We loved this characterful house. The pool was used every day.

The nearby town of Uzes is well worth a visit, with a superb market on Weds and Sats.

Perfect house near Uzes

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a week at L'Ancienne Mairie with 3 children aged 2, 7 and 17. Was absolutely perfect for everyone. The house is beautiful - more so than the pictures convey. The pool is big enough to swim and have fun and our 7 year old's confidence improved dramatically during the week. Location is spot on and ideal for nipping into Uzes and also as a base for Avignon etc. The numerous local wine caves are well worth a visit and we appear to have returned home with a year's supply... The arrangements themselves couldn't have been easier. Marco was exceptionally helpful and responsive to any queries ahead of the trip and Emma ( based locally) was really friendly and generous in her assistance during the stay. Just a great holiday and we will certainly be returning. Thank you.
