Luxury in a rural setting: walk, cycle, birdwatch; with Vejer and beach nearby

Built on the site of the original farmhouse, the John Pawson-inspired construction is pure simplicity from the outside: white walls and roof; straight lines, and tiny windows down both sides of the H-shaped design. But walk into the central 60-square metre living space through one of the two glass sliding doors (better said walls, due to their immense extension), and the effect is quite the opposite: you are met by a myriad of colours, forms, and textures, as the cosiness of the sitting room, with its vast comfy sofa, its fireplace and nice pieces of furniture, fuses with the grove of gnarled olive trees, framed within the glass wall opposite. At first site, you probably won’t even notice the kitchen; but it's all there, at the far end of the living space: sink, plenty of cutting area, hob, oven, etc....the only give away is the state-of-the-art extractor fan; but, like everything in this house, it is perfect in its inconspicuousness.

The sensation is the same in the bedrooms, which occupy the two wings of the “H”: those facing north look out through the olive trees; and the south-facing room, like the south side of the living area, opens on to a terrace that is surrounded by aromatic herbs and partially shaded by a vine. It is an ideal spot for breakfast or sitting in the winter sun. The bedrooms (2 twins and 1 double), decorated with soft pinks and blues, are traditional in their form, their steep sloping ceilings in keeping with what would surely have been the shape of the original farmhouse. Yet the bathrooms are modern and functional, and perfect in their simplicity: clean lines of marble and glass, and then a peak of undulating Andalusia through a small square window.

The property is often occupied by its owners, and this shows. Old books, photos, interesting objects d’art, the personalised ceramic plates, the hi-tech telescope for star-gazing. This is no ordinary holiday let; and you are continuously aware of the fact that you are in somebody's much-loved home. The outside is equally well cared for; the gardener visiting several times a week to ensure that the pool is perfect, that the gravelled terraces are clean, and that you are well supplied with vegetables from the La Valdesa kitchen garden. There is also a good supply of oranges and lemons in season, and even a lunar lemon tree, which produces baby lemons with every new moon, thereby ensuring that your G&T is well accompanied whatever the season!

With 3ha of land, there are umpteen places to sit and enjoy this magical spot: on the main terrace looking down through the olive grove; at the end of the property, contemplating the vast views across to the sierra; have breakfast on the south terrace, or next to the running water on the western corner; or idly swing in the hammock next to the pool, which has been built to simulate a traditional alberca. If the view across dozens of miles of Andalusian campo (in many ways more akin to Africa) makes you wonder how such extensive unspoilt beauty can still exist in mainland Europe, this is because you are looking out over one of the continent's great farms, the Domecq’s farm for fighting bulls (don't worry, there are a number of roads, streams and fences between you and them!) La Valdesa’s privileged location of course offers numerous opportunities for walking and biking. But if you are planning a less energetic stay, even the short stroll up the track outside the house will all of a sudden bring the magical Vejer-de-la-Frontera into view, perched on the hill right opposite. An alternative is to walk down and fill your water bottles at the natural spring, hidden in an oasis of fig trees on the rough track that connects the house to the road.

It is a 10-minute drive into Vejer (5 minutes on La Valdesa's rough entrance track!), with its selection of restaurants, bars, and cultural activities, 30 minutes to Cadiz, and 30 minutes to Tarifa. The nearest beach (a beauty) is a 15-minute drive, at Zahora or El Palmar (between Cape Trafalgar and Conil).

About the Owner

We are a husband-wife team that left Madrid for Spain’s deep south and a change of ...well, virtually everything really! We came up with the idea of Dos Xtremos in 2006, the catalyst being the need to increase the number of people renting our own properties, one in La Coruña and the other in Cadiz (Atlantic Spain’s two wonderful extremes). And since then, even though the business has grown (we now manage a number of properties for other owners), our goal has always been the same: “these are two wonderful and relatively undeveloped areas of Spain that have brought us enormous happiness; so let’s try and tell other people about them!” For this reason, the website has a heavy focus on regional information and includes details on the activities that we enjoy, both individually and as a family with young children.

All our houses are in the provinces of La Coruña and Cadiz, although there is a significant bias towards Cadiz, because that is where we live! Each house has been chosen because it has something special to offer, and we have tried to ensure that the mix meets a variety of tastes and requirements. In the case of the Cadiz properties, we live close by, meaning we are on-hand for problem solving and making recommendations. You may prefer to lounge by the pool (all our pools are very tempting), but if you do want to explore, we have suggestions to fill a lot more than two weeks! As for La Coruña, we personally are a long way away, but the properties are well looked after and our list of recommendations is even longer (to offset the less predictable weather!) We have a close and productive working relationship with all our owners, and we believe this shows in the way our properties are maintained.

panacea for your mind body and soul

It was love at first sight when we approached La Valdesa with its sweeping views across the countryside and down the valley. The romance deepened further as we entered the house. On a hot sunny day it was welcoming, cool and extremely comfortable. You can tell that the property is well used and much loved by the owners who have furnished it beautifully to soothe the soul and relax the mind.

Andrew from www.dosxtremos.com could not have been more helpful. We knew little about the region other than what was in our guide book but Andrew filled us in with some “local” suggestions for restaurants, beaches and ancient towns - his knowledge of the area (and beyond) and what it offered was inspiring.

We were lucky enough to witness a great variety of remarkable migrating birds, including flocks of storks – more than 100 strong - gracefully circling on the thermals overhead which, if you blinked, were gone in a moment.

The only person we saw at the property was the friendly gardener/handyman, Enrique who brought us daily bags of fresh locally farmed and delicious vegetables and fruit.

There really are not enough words to describe how relaxing our time spent at La Valdesa was. It is the most perfect place to base yourself if you want to explore this beautiful and historic region (by foot, horse, car or boat), swim in the warm waters, or watch the huge diversity of species of migrating birds, whilst sipping on your gin and tonic made with one of the freshly pick lemons from the garden and to lie back after a busy day at the beach just to enjoy the peace and quiet of the villa and its beautiful setting.

Heaven on Earth

Couple with two small children (4 and 2). Second 1-week stay two years in a row, it already feels like our second home - a second home we could never afford to buy, but which we are most grateful to be able and allowed to rent for a few days each year. Maintenance, cleanliness and equipment to the highest standards - particularly valuable and rare in such a relatively rough terrain. In short: can you keep a secret? Then do us a favour and do not spread the word!

An oasis right in the middle of paradise

We spent one week at this unique property with our 1 and 3 year old children at the peak of the spring 2014, when the fields were bursting with colour and scents. We were not expecting this area to be as densely and beautifully vegetated – but that proved to be out of ignorance, of course. The province of Cádiz has definitely much more to offer than its coast, by all means a huge asset in itself, just a few minute drive from the property – and you can choose which beach along the Costa de la Luz you want to go to each day, if that’s your thing.

The neatly built minimalist architecture of La Valdesa contrasts sharply compared with the surrounding wilderness. One could tell that the owners must have spent many long nights with their architects designing the house and every single detail in and surrounding it. All of the house, the garden and the pool are exquisitely maintained by Enrique, the neighbouring housekeeper, who would show up daily at the house to indulge us with whatever the orchard at the property had produced that day, including lettuces, onions, artichokes, potatoes… The lunar lemon tree in the garden is spectacular, as so are the huge lemons that grow on it.

The location coupled with the far reaching views from La Valdesa provide a sense of genuine remoteness whilst, in actual fact, the property is just a short drive away from the main road (mind the bumpy track over the last couple of kms. if you are driving your own car, although we felt that this actually added even more fun and authenticity to the whole experience). This is an excellent platform from which to explore the whole area, which has A LOT to offer.

Finally, our gratitude and recognition go to Andrew and María, the agents, for their carefully selected portfolio of special rental properties, their grasp of detail and round the clock availability on the ground. What you see on their comprehensive and nicely laid out web page is a true reflection of ‘at least’ what you get, and they ensure that you enjoy a trouble-free holiday.

We will certainly be back for more!

Magical, luxury countryside villa

This is one of those difficult times when you want to do right by the wonderful owners and managers of an amazing place with an appropriately glowing review, but deep down you hate anyone else knowing about it for fear you might not be able to get it yourself next time...

La Valdesa is a truly special place for those who appreciate brilliant design, a stunning natural setting and total privacy. It is a good 10min drive down tricky dirt tracks to the main road (though manageable with a normal car), and another 10mins up another hill to the nearest town & shops/restos (gorgeous Vejer), or 15-20 to the nearest beach - and there is a stunning selection of those. But that is the point: you are guaranteed an idyllic spread of rolling hills and olive groves all to yourself, with not a soul in sight, even in the height of the summer season.

And this from a base of the highest quality, with its beautifully designed high ceilings and massive windows, to the immaculate bedding and power showers, and the meticulously equipped kitchen (including Nespresso machine, electric juicer and more variety of pots, pans, crockery and glassware than you could possibly find uses for). Oh yes, and lounging options (inside, outside, chair, recliner, sofa?) wifi throughout, massive TV, spare designer hats, telescope.... I dare anyone to stay there and not be enchanted.

Andrew from DosXtremos was a charming, discreet and accommodating host, at the other end of a phone throughout for even the silliest questions (we wanted to turn the cute little trough-fountain off for TOTAL silence, and he sorted it out straight away).

The villa's owners - such perfect taste, bravo! - and the lovely folks from DosXtremos who look after it deserve every success, so my partner and I cannot recommend this place highly enough. But we wouldn't mind terribly if it's available next time we try it, either...

Peaceful and Isolated

Well equipped lovely modern house with views of surrounding country side down a long dirt track. Twenty- forty minutes from beaches and other sights. Recommend day trip to Tangers in Morocco and beach at Bolonia with Roman ruins or relaxing by pool.

Wunderschön, ruhig und erholsam

Wir haben mit 2 Erwachsenen und 3 Kindern, 8 - 14 Jahre, unsere Osterferienwoche in La Valdesa sehr genossen. Das Ferienhaus ist wunderschön, ruhig und inmitten grüner Hügel gelegen. Die Architektur ist fantastisch, sehr hell, die großen Fensterfronten geben den Blick auf die Terrassen und den Garten mit den Olivenbäumen frei, alles auch sehr sauber und gepflegt; die Einrichtung sehr geschmackvoll und persönlich; die Küche sehr gut ausgestattet ( wir haben fast tgl. gekocht). Hin und wieder kam der Gärtner vorbei und legte frisches Gemüse und Orangen (es gibt sogar eine Saftpresse) vor die Tür. Trotz der Abgeschiedenheit sind Vejer de la Frontera und die Strände (z.B. Zahora, El Palmar, Roche) rasch erreichbar, auch Ausflüge nach Cádiz oder Jerez sind spontan möglich. Im Haus gibt es einen Ordner mit umfangreichen Tipps. Der Kontakt mit dem Verwalter war sehr nett und freundlich, alles hat sehr gut geklappt.

Easy driving to Jerez (the famous riding school and sherry houses), Cádiz (arguably Europe's oldest city), Tarifa (and the boat to Tangiers), the wonders of Seville, and the intriguing pueblos blancos (white villages), including Vejer-de-la-Frontera, which is on your doorstep. This is the Spain of fighting bulls and flamenco, ferias and finos, and fine simple food. Visit the Roman ruins at Baelo Claudio, the lighthouse at Cape Trafalgar, the old tuna fishing port of Sancti Petri. 30% of the province of Cádiz is National Park, and here you will find green rolling hills (more akin to Ireland or Wales but divided by giant cactus hedges), one of the world's most important cork forests, and a micro climate within the Alcornocales park that is regarded as the last Mediterranean jungle. This property is a birdwatcher's paradise, sitting on the edge of La Janda and positioned right under the migration flight path. If you don't wnat to watch birds, watch whales in the Strait of Gibraltar (boat leaves from Tarifa). Hike and bike to your heart's content right from your own backdoor; surf any number of wonderful breaks; windsurf or kitesurf at Tarifa; choose from a huge selection of first-class golf courses (Valderama, Sancti Petri, Montenmedio, and many more). Or just lay on the beach (they are some of Europe's most beautiful). Or just stay at home: it's rather nice!
