About this property

NOCONA LODGE at Palo Duro Canyon. Serenity/Views/Wildlife.

Relax in luxury and Texas scenic comfort with your family and friends at Nocona Lodge, on the Rim of Palo Duro Canyon. Named for the Comanche Chief Warrior, Peta Nocona (Quanah Parker’s father). Native American and Southwestern artwork integrated throughout the 2500 sq ft of open living space. Nocona is one of the largest Vacation Rentals in the Area, and at the doorsteps of Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Living/dining/bar area will seat a large group, without the addition of any additional chairs. Great for family or friends' getaway. Very comfy leather Recliners and oversized chair/recliner to enjoy the game or woodburning fireplace.

Backyard entertaining with shaded seating/lounging for 6-10. Large Infrared Gas Grill for your Texas barbecues. Relax knowing your children and pets are secure in the open fenced back yard, with incredible views of the nation's second largest Canyon. Enjoy the visiting deer, aoudad (barbary sheep), coyotes; and numerous birds who frequent the unique/custom birdfeeder. House strategically positioned to enjoy afternoons and evenings on the shaded backyard patio. View fantastic Canyon color changes during sunset al fresco dining.

PICKLEBALL COURT
Because Pickleball is so easy to learn and play--it is now fastest growing and most popular sport in the US. Great family activity which requires little skill or athleticism.
SANDBOX
And for the toddlers--there is a VERY Large sand pit inside the gated back yard.
Rackets, pickleballs, basketball and sand-play toys provided.

Cozy front porch papasan swing enourages cuddling during morning coffee or evening cocktails. Share the quiet serenity of sunrise/sunset with the docile herd of Texas Longhorn Cattle grazing next door.

3 Bedrooms sleep 8 IN BEDS--none of this crashing on a couch or mattress on the floor!
For sleeping under the stars, there is double chaise lounge on back patio.

Oversized Master bedroom with handcrafted copper/wood King bed and luxurious custom bedding. Master Bath with large soaking bathtub, shower, and double sinks.

Second bedroom with beautiful hand-carved Southwest Queen bed. Ample storage, rocking chair, and Canyon view.

Bunkbed room next door has 2 double beds with stable built-in steps (no ladder), so can be accessed by anyone from toddlers to "mature" guests. Brightly decorated with corner desk, TV/DVD, and child-proof ceiling fan. Comfortable beds for young or old, who will also enjoy waking up to the Canyon view. All bedrooms have Smart TV's and Direct TV cable service. Wi-Fi throughout.

Kitchen has every amenity for any gourmet cook or "trail boss". Induction Range, large microwave, crockpot, griddle, 3 coffeemakers (Keurig, 10 cup drip, French press), Soda Stream machine, high end cutlery, numerous spices, all cooking staples, toaster oven, non-breakable dinnerware for younger guests, teapot, etc. Functional bar area, with every cocktail glass preferred by those aspiring mixologists (wine/martini/highball/margarita/moscow mule).

Parking for 2 vehicles in the oversized garage--especially appreciated during hot Texas summers, Winter snowstorms, and during those occasional sensational Texas Panhandle thunderstorms.

Nocona Lodge, pays homage to Chief Quanah Parker Nocona, the last of the Quahada Comanche warriors who dominated the High Plains in the 1800's. Battle of Palo Duro Canyon was @ 20-miles east in September 1874. This battle brought an official end to the U.S./Indian wars, and the eventual peace that finally allowed settlers to occupy this last remaining freedom-outpost of “uncivilized” land in North America.

Price listed is for 6 Guests of ANY AGE.
For 7-8 guests, add on $50/night, per guest. MAXIMUM 8 Guests (Adults/Children).
**Since majority of our guests have only 2-4 in their group, have kept our rates considerably lower ($100-$300/night less) than other 3-bedroom properties in the area. So groups of 8 will pay the competitive rate for Palo Duro Canyon Rim properties.

Beverly warmly greeted us with guacamole and margaritas! Her home is lovely with every amenity and tastefully decorated. The aoudads come right up on her driveway and let us hand feed them - such a neat experience. Palo Duro Canyon State Park is minutes away with easy trail access. We did a lot of cooking at home and had a few meals at Sad Monkey. A great home and experience.

Great time. Enjoyed our time together. Introduced granddaughters boyfriend to Texas Lots of fun. Squeezed a lot of activity into three days. House was fully equipped with everything we needed to have a wonderful experience. It was a little difficult for me to coordinate with family and host to check-in. We were uncertain of the plans everyone had and felt some pressure to be at house at certain time to check-in. We did not have a written list of things that needed to be done to check out until the night before. It would have helped to have this information when we checked in so we could have been sure that we put things back exactly the way the hosts wanted them. Overall, it was terrific and we will try to do this again.

Nocona lodge is awesome!
We had a fantastic spring break staying at Nocona lodge. Beverly is a really thoughtful host and so sweet! She really takes pride in making sure you have a comfortable and cozy stay. The house is well stocked, really nice kitchen and appliances, everything you need! All the fun Texas and historical coffee table literature was interesting to read. The wild life out back was the highlight of the trip for our 3 boys! They got to feed deer, Aoudad’s and saw a coyote too! Kid’s enjoyed playing pickleball. The view of the canyon was beautiful. Really short drive to the State Park and Sad Monkey Mercantile is right at the entrance to the neighborhood has great pizza. Highly recommended booking Nocona Lodge!

About the host

Phil had a dental practice in Oklahoma City when he met Beverly (surgical PA in Albuquerque) at a military medical conference 1980. Both were Reserve medical officers (Phil--Air National Guard, Beverly--Navy/Marines), with several overseas deployments. With 2 weeks notice of OEF deployment, Phil sold his house and private dental practice in OKC and moved to ABQ. Days prior to his flight for duty in Afghanistan, they were married by Navy/Marine chaplain in a hot air balloon over Rio Grande in ABQ, the "Balloon Capital of the World". Very befitting for former Air Force pilot and paratrooper chaplain. Beverly proudly carried US flag as her "bouquet". Phil's Dad (94 y/o WWII veteran) was the best man, and one of Beverly's 5 Texas sisters was her maid of honor.
After deployment, Phil worked in group dental practices in ABQ. Currently employed by Pediatric Dental group called "Smiles for Kids". Beverly continued her surgical PA (Otolaryngology) career at the VAMC ABQ, until her last deployment aboard aircraft carrier (USS Eisenhower) in Persian Gulf.

Why they chose this property

Although Beverly grew up in a large, High Plains farm family; she had lived elsewhere during her college/medical training, and then subsequent surgical/military career. When Beverly/Phil/Belinda were visiting their Dad in Amarillo Nursing Home for Father's Day 2015, they rented a cabin in Palo Duro Estates. They were mesmerized by the beauty and tranquility of the area. It was shocking that this "area of heaven" existed in the Texas Panhandle (definitely no homes on the Palo Duro Canyon Rim when Beverly/Belinda were growing up on the windy/flat High Plains!). How fortuitous that another similar property became available 6 months later. Their tenacity was rewarded when they insisted on a realtor showing during the 2015 Christmas Blizzard! Definitely meant to be.

What is now known as "Nocona Lodge" was handiwork of a premier Texas builder, who designs his custom homes in the style of famous architect Mary Coulter---organic, rustic, and functional.
This spectacular house is more spacious than any other Palo Duro vacation rental. It allows Beverly/Phil to comfortably host Beverly's very large extended family, who are scattered throughout the farms and fields of Amarillo/Lubbock area. With it's fenced backyard, her siblings feel more comfortable with their toddlers not "toppling over the cliff". And the "furbabies" can be sequestered while enjoying their wildlife patrols.
It is essentially handicap accessible---a plus for their Dad's wheelchair; and later for twin sister with terminal illness.

Now Beverly and Phil share Nocona Lodge with others, but still continue to enjoy. When they travel for a weekend or Holiday from Albuquerque, they prefer to "nest". They've made it their Texas resort, with every amenity imaginable. (However, all personal effects/clothing/pictures removed, so this becomes "your resort"!)

What makes this property unique

--Quiet. Serene. Regular wildlife enjoyment.
--Walking and biking right outside the door.
--Only 2.9 miles to Palo Duro Canyon State Park entrance.
--Spacious/Open living area for entertaining. Largest in
the Palo Duro Rim area. Seats 21 without addition of any
other chairs (but extra barstools and chairs are available).
--Sleeps 8 in beds. However, if some want to sleep outside or
not share a bed---double chaise lounge outside and futon in
lving room. Fold up cots and air mattress as well.
--Fenced yard for security of pets and children. No others in
the area as covenant restricted (previous owners had fence
grandfathered in).
--Use of 2 car Garage (and it's extra long). No other vacation
rental within 5 miles of Palo Duro has a garage. Really nice to
unload an F-150 truck inside, out of elements.
