About this property

Multi-award winning Georgian Farmhouse, village location, short walk to beach

The Mill House is a beautiful detached Georgian farmhouse situated in a quiet country lane. It has spectacular views across fields to the Downs and is a ten-minute walk from the sea at Brighstone Bay. Across the lane is a pleasant five-minute walk passing the mill pond, stream and mythical Dragon Tree, which leads to the picturesque village of Brighstone with its well-stocked village shop, family friendly pub, gift shop, library, museum, tea shop, cafe and children’s play park.

Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it is a marvellous nature watching and mountain biking/horseriding/walking/cycling area. Footpaths and mountain bike trails can be followed from The Mill House to join coastal and inland paths leading to nearby Brighstone Bay, Brighstone Forest and dramatic downland trails including the Tennyson Trail and the Chalk Ridge Extreme. As a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, with light pollution kept to a minimum, stargazing from the garden or nearby Brightstone beach is a great night-time activity for the whole family.

The Mill House is also less than a mile from the world-renowed dinosaur hotspot - an 11 mile stretch of coastline that runs between Compton and Sandown which regularly yields a large collection of dinosaur bones and fossils. The sandy bays of Compton, Totland and Colwell are a short drive away as are the small towns of Freshwater and Yarmouth offering a good choice of restaurants, cafes, pubs and shops.

The Mill House has been renovated to a very high standard with many original features retained and has been annually awarded the VisitEngland Five Star and Gold awards since 2009, The Beautiful South Bronze Award for Self Catering Property of Year 2019-2020 and the VisitEngland ROSE Award 2022 recognising Service Excellence. The Mill House is a comfortable, well equipped, spacious home from home for families/friends holidaying or celebrating a special occasion together. The house is centrally heated and has a combination of fitted carpets, rugs, stone and wooden floors and almost all the rooms have open rural views.

The property benefits from a beautiful handmade kitchen with an electric AGA, Miele Electric Fan Oven and Induction Hob, Microwave, Dishwasher and two tall Fridge/Freezers. The Mill House accommodates up to 12 guests in three large bedrooms with king sized beds (one with four poster bed and one with a wooden cot), one double bedroom and two twin rooms (one with full sized bunk beds and one ground floor bedroom with two single beds). There are three bathrooms - one family bathroom with corner bath and shower cubicle, one bathroom with roll top bath and one downstairs bathroom with shower cubicle. There is an elegant sitting room with Georgian shutters, an open fireplace (starter packs of logs provided) , grand piano, stereo system and ample comfortable seating.

Next door is a cosy snug sitting room with sofa, chairs, a wood burning stove, Smart TV, DVD player (please bring your own DVDs) and a selection of family games, children’s toys, puzzles and books. The dining room with views over the garden is furnished with solid oak furniture seating 12 people and also has a wood burning stove.

The Mill House is surrounded by large, private and enclosed gardens with mature shrubs, trees and large lawned areas. There is a patio area with garden furniture and a gas BBQ for guests’ use. There is ample parking to the rear of the property. A Hot Tub is available upon request.

Our changeover day is usually a Saturday arriving at 4 pm and departing by 10 am, however, outside the summer months, we are happy to accept short breaks (minimum 2 nights) and can be flexible with regards to arrival and departure.

A Welcome Pack voucher is provided for guests to choose their own items at the Brighstone Village Shop which stocks Isle of Wight produce such as fruit, vegetables, meat, cheese, milk, yoghurt, cream, eggs, honey, chutneys and jams, baked goods, gin, wine and much more!

Children of all ages are welcome, as are well behaved dogs (Max of 2 dogs by arrangement with a pet fee of £25 per pet per stay).

I can provide guests with 15% discount codes for both Wightlink and Red Funnel ferry companies and I am happy to provide recommendations/advice/assistance with planning of your visit.

With its mild climate, stunning scenery and beautiful beaches and downlands, the Isle of Wight is a wonderful holiday destination for all ages. We look forward to welcoming you to The Mill House.

Special family stay
Mill House is ideally situated on the West coast to enjoy everything the island has to offer coupled with easy walking access to the local beach. The house had everything we could possibly need for our large 3 generation family gathering and the weather was just perfect for us. Lots of cooking together in the kitchen and bbq time in the garden. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful home.

About the host

Host profile image
I was born on the Isle of Wight but have lived on the mainland for most of my adult life with the hope to return to the Isle of Wight to live one day. I enjoy walking and exploring the 68 mile coastal path (in sections!) and the island's criss-cross network of footpaths and trails - I am never short of a new walk to find!

Being a host to holidaymakers from all around the world is a wonderful job. I enjoy assisting visitors with the planning and organisation of their visit and can provide information and recommendations on anything from baby/dog sitting and private chefs to guided fossil walks and pottery painting.

I love being part of guests' happy holiday memories at The Mill House and strive to offer exceptional customer service from the enquiry stage to waving guests off at the end of their stay.

Why they chose this property

We booked The Mill House for a family holiday in June 2004 and fell in love with it! One year on, we were the happy and proud owners of The Mill House along with its holiday bookings for the busy summer season. In September 2005 we closed our doors for six months to renovate the interior of The Mill House to create a welcoming and comfortable holiday home, well equipped to ensure that guests get the most out of their stay. We love that The Mill House is part of guests' happy holiday memories and we go the extra mile to ensure that every stay is as enjoyable and memorable as it possibly can be. I am happy to recommend places to eat and visit, things to do and see. We look forward to welcoming you to The Mill House in the future.

What makes this property unique

The Mill House is situated on the edge of Brighstone village with rural views from most windows. It's peaceful location lends itself to a 'get away from it all' holiday yet the village amenities are close by for convenience. Guests can join the inland and coastal footpaths from the front door and the beach is just 5-10 minutes walk from the property.
