About the property

Huge luxury House With Garden, Aircon and heated Pool By Castle

Maison du Château is a superbly renovated and extremely spacious 4 bedroom property in a world class location, nestled at the very foot of Carcassonne castle. The views from the house of the floodlit castle at night are simply breathtaking and the house sits on a quiet street in the ancient district of La Barbacane, just two minutes' walk via a secret stairway to the Port D'Aude entrance to the castle. New for 2016 is air-conditioning!

The large garden has its own heated pool.

The Castle itself is the one of the world's most striking medieval fortified cities, housing a basilica, outdoor theatre, shops, restaurants with superb and varied local cuisine, as well as fantastic original battlements to explore.

All bedrooms are luxurious appointed with generous en-suite facilities (3 have minimalist wet-rooms), the large lounge has a huge L-shaped contemporary sofa and 55 inch TV with blu-ray player and powerful hifi giving amazing home cinema experience. The large kitchen, and adjoining dining area, is extremely well equipped and offers every modern convenience.

The house extends over three floors. The ground floor has a garage and entrance hall at the front, a huge dining room with exposed stone walls and adjacent kitchen to the rear, both of which open onto the garden and pool. The first floor has a large living room at the rear, again with exposed stone walls and access to a covered roof terrace with views of the castle, then two double bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms at the front of the house. The top floor has two very large bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, the rear one of which has unrivalled views of the castle.

All our guests have thoroughly enjoyed staying in the house, please take a read of our reviews which have been excellent! For dining at the house there is the elegant indoor dining room with wood-burning stove, and outdoor area with French shingle and pretty olive trees, or the large balcony with breathtaking views of the Castle towering above.

The house also has 2 powerful wood-burning stoves, which allows guests to stay any time of year, with many of our winter guests combining a cultural trip to historic Carcassonne with skiing in the nearby Pyrenees mountains.

The house and gardens boast a host of unique features including an outstanding internal medieval well (in the kitchen itself) and stone walls dating from the Romans which run along the back of the garden.

The nearby castle plays host to year-round festivals and world-class live music (this summer's festivals included concerts by Elton John, The Arctic Monkeys etc). Outside of the historic city, the Bastide St Louis -- a grid of shops, historic buildings, and the Place Carnot marketplace, with its Saturday market and outdoor cafes -- is just a short walk across the beautiful Pont Vieux.

Fantastic scenery nearby with swimming lake on edge of town and Mediterranean beaches 45 minutes drive away. The French countywide around Carcassonne is superb, with rolling hills, historic hilltop villages with historic churches and abbeys.

This is an ideal location for an extremely relaxing family holiday. In addition, Carcasssonne offers a huge variety of day trips within 30 minutes drive, such as the wonderful villages of Mirepoix, Minerve and Lagrasse which are internationally acclaimed for their history and beauty.

The house is easily spacious enough to accommodate two families, with two super-King beds and two double beds, and space in the lounge for extra people to sleep on the sofa bed. There are also extra occasional beds available.

The local streets are the setting for the current Channel 4 series Labyrinth, based on the celebrated novel by Kate Mosse.

Special note: secure bookings via the website. Half the rent is due up front to secure a booking and the other half, along with a €400 refundable damage deposit, is due a month before you go. Prices are fully inclusive of all linen, towels and local taxes.

Higher price for Bastille Day week in Carcassonne, with incredible world-renowned fireworks display over the Castle.

PLEASE NOTE -- The adjacent property (on holidaylettings.co.uk REF 371733), which is under separate ownership, sleeps up to 6 people in 3 bedrooms, so for larger parties (like weddings etc) it may be possible to book both properties together. Please contact either owner to discuss.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE - The house is in a peaceful residential area and so is not suitable for loud groups and so noise should be kept to a minimum in the garden after 11pm please!

About Ashley Seager

I purchased this property with a friend to enjoy as a holiday home and to rent out. We just fell in love with the location as it's right at the foot of Carcassonne Castle, and the view of the house by day and night (when it is floodlit) are spectacular.

Ashley Seager purchased this house in 2011

Why Ashley Seager chose Carcassonne area

We love the fact the house is on a peaceful road but very near a really lively area with lots of superb restaurants and bars. The nearby countryside is, in my opinion, some of the very best in France and extremely varied. And the sun shines so bright and all day long in this region, at least it seems that way!

What makes this house unique

Very comfortable, luxurious house. Swimming in nearby lake (car journey) is exquisite, and the Mediterranean coast is only 50 minutes drive away. In Winter, excellent quality Skiing is available Approx one hour drive away.

Magnificent house, superbly appointed

  • 5 of 5

Eight of us (four couples) shared Maison du Chateau for a week at the end of September 2016. The house itself is beautifully styled and equipped (for all our in-house gastronomie) and spacious enough for us to have plenty of privacy in different areas. The owners sent us a detailed 'house and region' guide which was very helpful; and were also very attentive to our holiday-planning questions. Everything supplied was of a very high standard, and we were completely delighted in every way. The house is gorgeous, the pool is lovely, the location is perfect. We are already planning a return trip!!

Like a fairy tale looking at La Cite every day

  • 5 of 5

Very lovely well cared for home with this incredible view out the back that does not seem real until you walk up and see la Cite up close. House is even more than described on the website. Great amenities, excellent kitchen to cook in for two or twenty people. We lacked for nothing the two weeks we were there. The house manager is always available for questions or assistance, the garage is large enough for our four door hatchback. This is the first home we have stayed in that had its own garage, a special treat to not have to look for street parking. The pool is large enough to do laps in plus it has the machine that generates a current you can swim against. The wifi is incredibly strong - we never lacked for speed even if 3-4 of us were online at the same time. We will definitely return within the next year or two.

House exactly as described + clean and welcoming.

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed the two weeks we spent here. Good base for exploring the Cathar castles. We also hired a motor boat one day and went for a cruise and lunch on the Canal du Midi.

I am hard pressed to fault this house but some way of securing the garage doors open would be a good idea as it can be a bit windy.

I certainly would return.

A luxurious house at close hand to the historic Cite of Carcassonne

  • 5 of 5

This must be one of the best equipped holiday rentals we have have ever found. The owners have anticipated nearly everything one might need or want, and the local representative is friendly and helpful.

The property description was completely accurate.

We have nothing negative to say about the house, the owners or the local representative. We would have no hesitation in rcommending the house to our family and friends.

This house surpassed all our expectations

  • 5 of 5

Maison du Chateau, Carcassonne, is every bit as good as it appears in the photos in a wonderful very quiet central location between La Cité and La Bastide The house is within a stone's throw of many local shops and cafés. Particularly good is Le Jardin d'Eté restaurant near the end of the Vieux Pont which has a splendid garden behind it for outdoor eating. Maison du Chateau is close the minor branch of the RIver Aude where you can wander on shady riverside walks beside dramatic weirs and rapids. Walk upstream to the first road bridge and back down the other side of the main branch of the Aude.

The house is very spacious as you can see in the photos with three French windows on the ground floor opening into the garden. The beds are very comfortable and the bed linen immaculate. Wonderfully scented Le Petit Marseillais liquid soap made from olive oil is on every sink and basin in the house making it a fantastic sensory experience simply to wash your hands! There is plenty comfortable garden furniture and a pool which is kept immaculate by twice weekly visits from a husband and wife pool maintenance team. Spare sets of house keys are provided so no-one is without the means of access. In a marvelously equipped and spacious kitchen there is room for a team of guests to work in unison to create meals from the great local produce.

Buy your meat, fish and cheese in Les Halles close to Place Carnot. If you miss the outdoor fruit and vegetable market in the morning at Place Carnot there is a marvellous green grocers at the end of Rue Verdun. There is a small Carrefour supermarket on Place Carnot, too, which is surprisingly well stocked, and a branch of Monoprix nearby. If your shopping is heavy you can get a taxi back home from the nearby rank at the railway station.

Six complementary bottles of wine are supplied at your host's expense by the next door neighbour who is also a wine merchant.

Within a few yards at the back of the house there are three pedestrian routes up to La Cité which is particularly charming at night. Go on to the Vieux Pont to view La Cité from a distance at night with all its floodlit fortifications and towers and then compare it with the the ancient drawing reproduced in the dining room of the house.

There is absolutely nothing negative to report concerning this house, the owner or his conscientious and helpful agent, Nicola Harrington.

HIGHLY recommended!

Wonderful house and views

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful house in a fantastic location. It has plenty of space inside and out and all the facilities that you could need, including a ping-pong table!

Plenty to do in the surrounding area such as the Canal du Midi, vineyards, Lastours, Peyrepertuse and Villefranche.
