About the property

Trullo Deserto consists of two Separate Houses, Each With 2 Bedrooms, 2 Bathroom

The property, which in high season is rented in its entirety on an exclusive basis, is ideal for 1 large family, 2 smaller families or a group of friends. Having two separate units means you can holiday together without being in each other's hair at all times. Good for maintaining family harmony!

Each house has its own terrace where you can have breakfast, but communal meals are usually taken under the gazebo in the courtyard of the trullo, close to the BARBEQUE.

The social focus of the property, at least in the summer, is undoubtedly the large (12x6m) swimming pool, where you can spend the day in the sun lying on some of the most comfortable loungers in circulation. And if the sun gets too hot (as it often does, despite a cooling breeze) you can either take a dip in the pool or shift under the shape of an olive tree. Much more romantic than an umbrella!

Come evening, you can either cook in the kitchen or on the barbecue (grilling the local lamb with rosemary plucked from a whole bush in the garden is a unique experience!) or go out to a restaurant. And one of the best fish restaurants in the whole area - Il Brigantino - is only 5 minutes drive away in San Michele Salentino. This is a restaurant that deserves a Michelin star, so visit it before the Michelin reviewers wake up to it and prices double.

There are 4 bedrooms, 2 in the trullo, 2 in the casetta (cottage). They are equipped with two families in mind: a double bed for the parents and two single beds for the kids. But the singles can be combined to create 2 more doubles according to your needs. Each bedroom also has its own bathroom with shower.

Each house has its own sitting room with a small TV and DVD player. No large screens because we do not believe people come on holiday to watch television! But we do offer a FREE WIFI connection to help you keep in touch with the world.

One of Trullo Deserto's main features is tranquillity. Many trulli in Puglia are built on the edge of plots of land that border a road. This can be a source of considerable noise because of passing traffic, of which there is a surprising amount. This is not our case, as we are set well back from the road (c. 1 km), so traffic noise is never more than a vague rumble in the distance. So tranquillity is the order of the day - and of the night. Nor will you have noisy neighbours, or a disco round the corner that keeps you awake. It may be the best night's sleep you'll ever get! Come and try it out.

About The Owner

I came to Italy many moons ago (1976) as an auditor, met Adriana, got married (1978) and stayed. A decade later, we decided to go into business together and set up Buroservice as a translation business specialising in financial and legal translations.

I also set up a magazine called The Informer to provide information about Italy to expats, especially newcomers who are likely to struggle with various hard-to-understand aspects of Italian life. In this case, the specialty was - and still is - Italian bureaucracy! After 26 years there's still plenty to write about! And having been in print from 1987 to 1999, in 2000 it went entirely on-line.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2004

Why The Owner chose Ostuni

While we have always lived in the North (currently in Arese, near Milan), Adriana's family is originally from Puglia (Spinazzola in the province of Bari) so there have always been strong links with this part of the country.

When we decided to invest in a holiday home, Puglia didn't start off as the automatic choice and we investigated many others, mainly in the south as Tuscany and even Umbria had become very expensive. So in 2004 we spent our holiday looking at Lazio, Marche, Sicily and Calabria. But when we crossed over into Puglia, something just clicked. It seemed the right place to be. We then saw various properties for sale. This was the third one and it was love at first sight. We didn't have to go through all the hassle of visiting hundreds of properties because we knew immediately that this was the one.

We then set about restoring the trullo, building a traditional 'làmia' style stone cottage with barrel roof, and creating a swimming pool under the olive trees.

We opened for business in 2006 and have had dozens of guests since then, mainly from Europe, but also from elsewhere.

What makes this cottage unique

Trullo Deserto is an ideal place to RELAX, thanks to its countryside tranquillity. But it is also an excellent POINT OF DEPARTURE for all sorts of interesting places to visit.

Another unique benefit of Trullo Deserto is that it can accommodate up to 8 people (10 at a pinch), but they do not have to live on top of each other for 1 or 2 weeks. Having two separate houses makes for an even more RELAXING HOLIDAY. With practically no one around to disturb you.

Given the quality of the facilities provided, this would not normally be considered a 'budget' location, but 8 people can stay here in high season for €39 per person per night (€28 in mid-season), which is very good value for money. Especially as the quoted prices are all-inclusive. No extras for linen, towels, a/c, hot water, gas/electricity, pool use, Wi-Fi, etc. You just have to buy food and drink (including bottled drinking water). And concentrate on relaxing and enjoying yourself, knowing that there will be no nasty surprises at the end of your holiday.

Tranquil country location in traditional PUGLIESE TRULLO with all (well, most) mod-cons. 15 minute drive to beach. Ideal base for visiting world-famous places like ALBEROBELLO, Grotte di Castellana, Ostuni, Martina Franca, Locorotondo, CASTEL DEL MONTE, Lecce, Taranto, Egnazia, Brindisi, MATERA. 30 minutes to spa/beauty farm and golf course. Lots of excellent restaurants (with discounts or special offers at our favourites). Local specialities (which you can learn to cook and/or have prepared for you at home) include fresh fish and shellfish (Taranto is famous for its mussels, while the Adriatic Sea is home to numerous delicious types of fish, including indigenous wild oysters!), fabulous charcoal grilled lamb or kid, special pasta dishes in odd shapes (like 'orecchiette', little ears), many with greens ('cime di rape') or pulses ('lentils, chickpeas), as well as tasty cheeses washed down with excellent wines.

These used to be sent north in bulk to add body to French and Northern Italian wines, but now they are appreciated in their own right and therefore estate-bottled. Look out in particular for Negroamaro (also in the form of Salice Salentino) and Primitivo di Manduria (both reds). Locorotondo and Castel del Monte are also famous for their wines, both red and white, while Pugliese rosés (rosato) are some of the tastiest anywhere. Superb chilled on a hot summer afternoon by the pool!

Puglia is Italy's largest olive producing region and the countryside is dominated by olive trees, many of them centuries old with fascinating gnarled shapes. Our trullo is also located in the midst of an olive grove, an amazing backdrop to the swimming pool.

History buffs are well served in this area as Puglia once formed part of MAGNA GRAECIA, with influences still felt in the local dialect and facial features. Later it fell under the sway of the Romans, Byzantines, Normans (who left numerous beautiful churches), the Holy Roman Empire represented by Frederick II ('Stupor Mundi') who built lots of castles, the most famous (and mysterious) of which is Castel del Monte, inland from Bari; later Puglia was ruled by the Spanish Bourbons. Lecce is the home of a particular style of Baroque which you must not miss. And slightly further away is the Matera, with its extraordinary 'Sassi', the troglodyte dwellings cut into the ravine face that were inhabited up to the 1950s. They have since acted as the backdrop for numerous films, the most recent being Mel Gibson's 'Passion of Christ'. And not far away is Castellaneta, birthplace of Rudolph Valentino.

So, as you can see, there's something for everyone in this area, except for skiers! And we have a User Manual to ensure that you make the most of your holiday in Puglia. Perhaps the first of many! You will be made extremely welcome.
