Guestbook comments from the manager

Great location in Como

My family of 5 stayed at Villa Elika in april for a few nights. From Como S. Giovanni train station, the walk is about 10 minutes. From Como Nord Lago train station, the walk is even shorter. Eric was waiting for us with the keys in a cafe next to the apartment building. The building is very secure. It is about 2-3 steps up, then the main entrance which requires a key, followed by a few more steps to the elevator. I think the stairs would be manageable for the elderly (maybe not wheelchair bound). Eric showed us everything about the apartment - how to use the kitchen appliances, tv, reset the breaker in the basement, etc. He was very patient and informative. There are flyers, maps, ferry schedules and brochures in the apartment in case you didn't do your research beforehand. The WiFi also worked well. The apartment is clean and well kept. We found the beds to be comfortable. My sister didn't have any issues with the sofabed.

The location of this apartment is amazing. It is literally 1 block and 1 piazza/square from the Lake. It is within walking distance of everything especially the ferry and trains. It is next door to a supermarket and a few storefronts from a bakery. We really enjoyed our stay here. The apartment is large and roomy which is not what my family was expecting after travelling through Italy where things are usually more conservative in size. It was great having a large living room for our family and a big kitchen. The bathrooms are also big as well.

Eric and Robin have been very helpful from the start. Answering my questions and acting as a concierge. They helped me make all my dinner reservations since most restaurants only accept phone calls. They also gave me suggestions on things to do and where to eat. Since I didn't have a phone in Italy, they were very responsive to my emails when we stayed in the apartment. I would definitely recommend this apartment to anybody and hope to stay there again in the future. Thank you!

Lovin our stay in Como and Villa Elika

  • 5 of 5

Arrived in Como during the hottest month...July/August. Eric met us at the local cafe and showed us up to the Villa/apartment. He was one of best hosts we had. He took a lot of time with us to show how things work and answered all our questions about Lake Como. Not to mention he was available by phone if needed. The Villa was beautiful and well taken care of. I just want to say coming from the US, dont expect Europe to be the same as North America, as we do sometimes. This is what makes places like Italy special and different. The A/C unit worked fine when you kept the blinds shut during the day and fans going. Both beds were very comfortable and we were two couples using both. One bathroom has a tub and the other a shower...we used the shower more. It is centrally located, the store is literally next door. We found everything convenient and taking the ferry to Bellagio easy. The Villa is very large and we did not have problems with finding our personal space. Eric and Robin are also owners of Lake Como Beach Resort, which we visited for a welcomed swim. Again, Villa Elika met our expectations, we were comfortable and will recommend it to our friends.

great location, very comfortable condo

  • 4 of 5

There were four of us, two couples. We found this condo relatively spacious and well appointed. Eric was extremely helpful and responsive throughout our stay. He met us at the condo to explain everything to us and even arranged for a driver to take us to our next destination in Switzerland. The beds were comfortable and we couldn't have found a better location from which to travel to the various spots on Lake Como and get to know the charming section of Como itself. It was literally 5 minutes to the Ferry terminal. As another reviewer mentioned, this is not actually a penthouse as we know it in US terms. It wasn't on the top floor and there were no views. It also didn't have central AC...just one rolling unit that we kept in the living room. During the day we kept the metal blinds closed to keep out the heat. This was not a major problem, as we were usually gone during daylight hours, and we had fans in the bedrooms and an extra one in the living room. One hitch was that we only had one set of keys, which made it difficult for us to plan going our separate ways. Eric tried to make a copy but was never able to do so. Also, he thought our arrival and departure dates were one day earlier than booked...but again this never made it a problem for us in particular. All in all, we were happy with our location and quarters.

Large and comfortable but with a few disappointments

  • 4 of 5

Villa Elika is large and comfortable; and it has all the features and amenities for a pleasant stay. It's location could not be better -- a grocery market 50 yards from the front door, two blocks to the waterfront and ferries, restaurants all around, a good base from which to roam around Como, and plenty of gelato and pastry shops to satisfy any sweet tooth. Two train stations are within walking distance - - the less frequently used about 10 minutes away, and the more popular about 25 minutes walking. Also, Eric is very helpful with restaurant suggestions and responding to anything that needs attention.

In reading the VRBO description of the apartment keep in mind that it is written about an apartment in Italy. To call Villa Elika a penthouse, for example, is a misnomer; it has none of the features one would expect of a penthouse in the US. And when the VRBO says it has “a/c” , it means it has a cooling unit on wheels that can cool one bedroom or a portion of the large living room; it is not central air as one would expect in the US. It's unfortunate that VRBO overstates some features because that just raises expectations. In fact, Villa Elika is a really fine apartment that does not need the extra hype. A straightforward description of it is all that is needed to portray a place that can serve as a great home-base to see Lake Como, Milan, and other interesting sites.

PS -be careful with the hot water.

This property is exactly as described, photographed and reviewed. The location is perfect with easy access to all that Como has to offer and, being tucked away in the pedestrian zone, offers quiet tranquility from the touristy street traffic on a private sunny patio. The real bonuses are the full service mini market immediately downstairs, the fabulous bakery directly on the corner, and a selection of eateries just across the street. Eric is an attentive and available host. We have travelled globally staying in theses types of properties and, overall, this was a perfect experience for us, so if we are ever in Como again, this is definitely the place for us.

Thank you Eric and family, and kindest regards to you.

Right in the heart of Como's historic district, this property is 3 minutes walking to the ferry dock

  • 4 of 5

We were 2 couples and loved this apartment in Como's historic district. Grocery shopping was right outside our door, the Duomo was 2 minutes away and very worth seeing. The downside was a lot of church bells ringing all day and evening, but we found it charming and it didn't keep us awake at night. We had numerous issues, but the owner was very quick dealing with them and we had a wonderful time eating breakfast and some dinners there at the bar in the kitchen. The outside table and chairs was through a bedroom so we didn't use it. The roof top area had great views when it wasn't locked, but no comfortable seating for hanging out. The living room was very spacious, nicely decorated with comfortable couches and chair. The apartment only has one stand up shower (the other bathroom has a tub and handheld wand), but neither bath is connected to a bedroom, so we just shared the shower. The beds were comfortable. We enjoyed a side trip to Lugano in Switzerland and into Milan one day. There is so much to do on Lake Como that we barely scratched the surface in 5 days - a longer stay would have been great. The historic district was charming. A major issue that I should mention is parking if you have a car. You can park on the street, but you have to keep moving your car, so it is very inconvenient. The parking garage the owner recommends is about an 8 minute walk from the apartment and extremely expensive - 36 euros per 24 hours and you have to pay cash. It was cool the way they had excavated under the garage and you could walk around and see the ancient walls. The view of mountains from the harbor was gorgeous, but the water at the harbor was pretty scuzzy - just keep your eyes trained on the horizon. Overall, we would definitely recommend this apartment and the very helpful and knowledgeable owner.

And now, I have to say that I have said everything I can think of about this VRBO but am required to write on and on if I am to be allowed to leave a review. What is up with that? How can you expect people to be so incredibly excited about a review that they can wax poetic about it on and on and on. Well, I have already done that and just want to get on to other things and other reviews that don't require all this verbage. And I don't think they ever print the whole review anyway because I have never read one this long in all the time I have been using VRBO. They need to make a change and not require person to fill up this much space..

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback. The parking is right around the corner at the Duomo which is two minutes from the penthouse. There is another across the street from the Duomo. We are within the old city walls where parking is not allowed by anyone in Como Centro and everyone has to park in the parking areas like, Rome, Florence, Verona or Venice. Our towns have been here for thousands of years and so to keep in the quaintness of the old city and cobblestone roads, they have made it easier for people who come to Como and other towns to be able to come and use the public transport and don't need a car. The train service and ferries here are very good and very easy to use. Our penthouse was left in a very disrespectful state, dirty and in a horrible mess. We as owners were very disappointed as we had never had guests who were so disrespectful to our property. Each person should take care of any rental, just as they would want another to take care of theirs. This is a high end property and all of our things are personal and of value and the guests did not respect our property. We are very sorry to say that we would never rent to these guests in the future.
