Argegno:

You pass through the small town of Argegno (approx 700 population) when travelling up the Western shore of Lake Como from Cernobbio/Como to Menaggio. Well placed and sheltered, it is situated in a large inlet at the mouth of the Val d'Intelvi. This river flows at varying rates throughout the year as its tumbles from the mountains between Como and Lake Lugano.

Looking across the lake you can see Bellagio to the north and as far as Nesso towards the south. The village is of Roman origin and owes its name to the consul Publio Cesio Archigene. With the Lake being ruled by warring factions centuries ago, Argegno formed part of a defensive system, which extended as far as the ancient villa of Lenno and to Isola Comacina.

This picturesque and ancient village is crossed by the Telo stream which splits into two parts, after falling down from a the towns ravine. The two are joined by an old stone bridge with a lancet arch. From Argegno, it is possible to take a cable car up to Pigra (881m), which is situated on a plateau that enjoys a beautiful view of the lake. From here, it is possible to go on to the Valle della Camoggia, which is in the oasis of Argegno-Cima della Duaria, a conservation area. The road, which runs along Val d'Intelvi, also starts from Argegno and after following this road for about about 16 km, you will arrive at Lanzo.

The best way to appreciate Argegno is to walk up one of the narrow lanes. Most are paved with intersecting fan pattern of small square stones typical in much of the area. This area is almost entirely residential but the walkways are impeccably maintained with potted red geraniums and colourful flowers contrasting with the ancient brickwork and façades.

Lombardy - Lake Como Area:

The Italian Lakes are a little slice of paradise. Elegant ribbons of blue water stretch out ahead, folded into the sun-baked foothills, with a spectacular back drop of the snow-capped Alps.

Lake Como offers hidden treasures just waiting for the visitor to discover them: charming corners forgotten by time, lakeside villages where nothing seems to have changed for centuries.

It is steeped in history with an immense collection of churches, architectural masterpieces and works of art covering the centuries. The lake is situated in a basin surrounded by wooded mountains, and offers an extremely varied landscape, with its' shores featuring a succession of pastures, and woods as well as harsh and impressive rock formations.

All this alongside elegant, lakeside villas with sub-tropical gardens, which provide a haven of peace and tranquillity and chic resorts such as Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio and Como itself.

Warming, in spring and graced with natural beauty, the lakes are still a place to draw breath and wonder. Lake Como, oriented north-south, ringed by characterful old villages often wedged onto narrow beaches between rugged cliffs and water. Those classic lake images of flower strewn balconies, Baroque gardens and splendid waterside villas can be found here in abundance. Dotted around and between the lakes are some of Italy's finest art cities, such as Milan, Verona & Bergamo.

The most romantic and picturesque villages on the lake are Santa Maria Rezzonico, Varenna (15 min by ferry) & Bellagio (8 min by ferry), Lenno (visit Villa Balbianello, location for 007's Casino Royale as well as Villa Gaeta, right here in Menaggio) & Laglio (where George Clooney owns Villa Oleandra).

We had a great time in Argegno Centrale.

The property was beautifully presented and we would recommend it to friends. The town was charming and very central to visiting everything around Lake Como.

Your pre stay communications were timely and helpful.

perfect location, luxurious no.

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Argegno Bellavista and there were many positives associated with this property. Location was perfect, a few steps from public transport, lido, restaurants etc, but still very quiet and peaceful. Terrace was perfect for drinks and meals, and watching the moon rise.

There were, however, a few points which could have easily been improved, which we found disappointing. An upstairs toilet was dirty on arrival and had to be cleaned by us.The upstairs showers were either dangerously hot or stone cold and we were unable to regulate them.

We were traveling with a two year old and I had especially written for confirmation that a cot would be in the apartment on arrival. This was confirmed by Lydia del Renzio ( August 22) but no cot was waiting for us. Two phone calls later, and after over three hours of waiting , the cot was delivered.

One bedroom was serviced by air-conditioning in which the overflow was into a bucket in the room. This had to be emptied in the morning , after listening to the perpetual dripping throughout the night.

The first evening we decided to eat in but found the crockery incomplete. The missing pasta bowls and side plates appeared miraculously the following day.

Although , on the whole , we found the team friendly and professional , we feel the property was let down by the maintenance/cleaning staff.

The property is situated close to public parking and guests are able to walk down the charming ancient passageways to the lakefront centre in just a matter of minutes. Here a wonderful quaint piazza lined with cafs and restaurants can be enjoyed, a scenic promenade with ferry service and leading past the charming marina to a tree lined front by the beautiful church where guests can enjoy the fabulous lake views.

Highly recommended is the ‘La Piazetta’ restaurant which serves fine contemporary Italian cuisine and also the Café Colombo which serves a very good cappuccino! The local wine bar is also a delight for enjoying an evening aperitif before dining out. Visitors can also experience luxury Lake Como dining at the nearby fine restaurants of ‘Il Crotto di Platani’ in Brienno and Il Gatto Nero’ in Cernobbio. A bus service runs through Argegno, north to the picturesque central lake resort towns and south to the nearby city of Como, where a wide range of cosmopolitan delights and attractions can be enjoyed from boutique designer shopping, trendy bars, clubs, the Villa Olmo events and the panoramic view Brunate funicular railway. A fast ferry takes visitors to the central lake providing them with a beautiful and scenic way to see Lake Como. A motorway also conveniently leads to Switzerland.

Golf:

There are Golf clubs around Lake Como: The Menaggio & Cadenabbia Golf Club is Italy's oldest golf course. Established in 1907 with 18 holes Par 70, it is located above Menaggio near Croce, in Grandola ed Uniti, approx. 20 min. by car. Green Fees: Weekdays €55, Weekends and Holidays 70 Euros; Golf Cart Rental €36.

Restaurant Golf at the club serves fantastic food and is well recommended.. Guests are always welcome, please call beforehand to check course rules. Golf Club Menaggio: (Menaggio Como).

Skiing:

This beautiful lake region of Italy is not the best for skiing as you may imagine, despite its scenery, crisp air and near perfect visibility and mountains capped in winter snow. It does however have Skiing opportunities at local resorts for a day out.

There is a small ski area on Mt. Lema, not more than 10 km from Lugano, but you have to be lucky to have enough snow for skiing. In Ticino, the local Swiss Canton, the best places to ski are probably either San Bernardino (south of the pass of the same name) or Airolo (south of Gotthard pass). Both are reachable in about 1 hour by car across the Swiss border.

There are direct trains to Airolo as well from Lugano and hence from Italian Stations. To S. Bernardino there is only a bus connection. For more snow try Andermatt (on the north side of Gotthard pass) which has normally good snow conditions and a good choice of runs.

The closest major ski resorts are St. Moritz and Madesimo toward the Splugen Pass which is approx.100km.
