Overview

About the property

Self-catering rental, ideal for families and exploring Lazio, Umbria &Tuscany

The Yellow House is a haven of peace and tranquillity in the heart of rural Italy, it is secluded, hidden in a valley and surrounded by mature trees and beautiful views. The villa itself is elegant and comfortable and perfect for self-catering holidays for family groups. Happy days can be spent enjoying the large private pool, playing bocce on the new court, exploring the 10 acres of land and fishing in the stream. For those who want to explore the area there is much to see including Lake Bolsena where you can swim, water ski, jet ski, explore the lake on pedelos and visit the beautiful island of Bisentina by boat. The city of Orvieto is only 40 minutes away and a visit will keep shoppers, historians and gastronomes happy all day long. Nearer home is the fascinating 'dying city' of Civita di Bagnoregio, a tiny town perched on the top of what remains of a an earthquake 300 years ago, and offers spectacular panoramic views.

Surrounding landscape: The large private swimming pool (5m x 15m) is situated on the side of a hill and below is the winding valley. The pool is secluded and peaceful. Around the perimeter of the pool is a mature rosemary bush providing a beautiful perfume in the evenings and fresh herbs for cooking. The marble patio is spacious with plenty of room for the 8 sunloungers. In the garden there are 3 large garden tables and outside seating for 20 people. There is a lantern in the oak tree which provides the perfect light for intimate suppers or large parties in the evening. There is a large pizza oven which is great fun to use for cooking pizzas, joints of meat etc. The garden is informal. and the area around the house has space to park several cars. There are plenty of places to explore on the land including 3 small caves and a stream at the end of the bottom field from where it is possible to fish for trout. We have one neighbour but neither of the houses are overlooked.

Eating and drinking : There are a wide variety of very good restaurants within driving distance of Civitella D'Agliano which cater for all needs including families. For specific details visit our website: Please contact us for the web site address. There are many local wines but the best known is the organic wine made by Sergio Mottura and his family who own the beautiful hotel La Tana dell'Istrice. If you are interested you may like to spend an evening with the Mottura family and their guests tasting wine, visiting the impressive wine cellars and finishing off with a delicious meal in their restaurant.

Cookery demonstrations. Learn how to make traditional dishes prepared in The Yellow House kitchen by a local chef. Guests can be involved in the preparation or just watch the experts at work. Enjoy the fruits of your labour accompanied by regional wines. The selection of dishes will vary depending on the best ingredients available. Contact Cristina for details of choices and price.

Things to do and see: If you enjoy shopping for local produce you may want to visit the markets, these are a typical feature of the local areas, the size of the markets vary depending on the town's importance. The markets usually start at 8am and finish at 1pm. On Monday there is a market in Bagnoregio, Tuesday in Bolsena Thursday and Saturday in Orvieto and a small market on Friday in Civitella d'Agliano. For those of you who enjoy golf 'La Querce' Golf Club is approximately 40 minutes drive away just south of Viterbo - 18 hole, par 72, 64262 meters. And those that ski -Mount Amiata is 60km from the house in Tuscany on the way to Siena (approximately a one hour drive). Although not on the door step it is possible to visit the resorts for day trips. There is good skiing at Prato della Contessa, Prato della Macinaie, Marsiliana and Cantore. Slopes are suitable for beginners and advanced skiers. For excellent local info 'Bolsena, Everything You Need to Know' by Fleur Kinson -

About e-mail - Emma de Souza (England), phone - Cristina Casian (Italy)

We live in Hertfordshire and have a teenage daughter.

We bought The Yellow House in 2002 and have always loved Italy, buildings and restoration. Some Italian friends have a property near Bolsena and after visiting the area we were struck by how unspoilt and beautiful it was.

e-mail - Emma de Souza (England), phone - Cristina Casian (Italy) purchased this villa in 2002

Why e-mail - Emma de Souza (England), phone - Cristina Casian (Italy) chose Viterbo Province

Initially we looked at properties near Bolsena but could not find anything with enough seclusion or land. We broadened our search and came across several possibilities, The Yellow House was our favourite.

At the time the house was a ruin and we spent 2 years on the restoration. The project was great fun and we had lots of support from our now property manager, Kalle.

Parts of The Yellow House were renovated again in 2010. The main change is the kitchen which has been extended to form a much larger kitchen dining area with modern professional kitchen (30ft x 12ft).

What makes this villa unique

Secluded spot, beautiful views of valley, local area unspoilt by tourism. Very close to local shops, restaurants and medieval village. Large private swimming pool. Outside pizza oven. Perfect base to explore Lazio, Umbria and Tuscany. Wine tasting and catered events including cooking demonstrations. Private fly fishing instruction for all levels of experience.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Emma, Just to say what a lovely time we all had at the Yellow House from 26/7 to 2/8. It met all our hopes and expectations and we had such fun with the pool, the outside terrace, the games (scrabble and monopoly were favourites) and we played a very successful game of 'Sardines' - If you don't know it, it involves one hiding and the rest searching until the last one finds the hiding place where everyone else is holding their breath! The house affords many good hiding places! Kalle and the cooks who came in did us proud and for the rest we enjoyed the local produce home cooked. Lovely place. I'm sure you are so happy when there. Best wishes

An idyllic holiday

  • 5 of 5

We were so lucky to have found this beautiful house. The space was perfect for two families. The surrounding countryside is lovely and peaceful. There is a small village close by and a mini supermarket, so you are not isolated but you really feel like it is the countryside.

The pool and outside space is fabulous. We loved the big kitchen and the pizza oven.

It was a wonderful holiday and Cristina the manager could not have been a better host.

Another prefect stay at the Yellow House!

  • 5 of 5

It is everything it's advertised to be and more. Perfect base to explore Italy or just hang around local. Plenty of room, great views. Best part of the stay is going into town and shopping at La Botegga (essa 4) grocery and buying the local meats, cheese and wines and going back to the house to enjoy inside or outside on the patio.

The Yellow House - the perfect place to relax.

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful tranquil location yet not far from the lovely medieval town of Civitella d'Agliano. The Yellow House itself is everything you could wish for - spacious, bright, decent sized bedrooms and a fabulous kitchen. The swimming pool is just fantastic and almost an infinity pool with views that stretch across the valley. Sitting outside in the evening with a glass of local wine just watching the sun go down was such a pleasure. Thank you I will certainly return.

One of a kind Italian getaway

  • 5 of 5

Returned to The Yellow House after a few years away this September and had an absolutely fantastic stay. Just the ideal place to escape and switch off, would recommend to anyone looking to experience some perfect peace and quiet. The new landscaping looks beautiful and the pool and view were stunning as ever. We visited as many of the nearby towns as we could squeeze in and tasted some exceptional food and drink. Despite being beaten on the brand new Bocce court - I can't wait to return again!

Just as good the second time round!

  • 5 of 5

We returned to the Yellow House following our stay 2 years ago, and loved it just as much as the first time. The house itself is lovely and spacious, and the new en-suite toilets in the top rooms make life even easier. The pool is large and cool, and the new landscaping and Bocce court are a great addition. 8 of use stayed with plenty of space, and the area is very quiet and typically Italian. Everything you need is provided, there was a lovely welcome pack for the first meal and breakfast and some lovely wine, and Christina is always on hand to help with anything, speaking very good English and friendly - not that we needed to ask for anything else! We couldn't ask for a better place to relax, and it is a great base for exploring - Rome is within easy reach by train, and we also visited the lovely hill top town of Orvieto and the local "dying city". I am sure we will be back for a third visit in the future.
