Named by the Guardian Newspaper as one of the top fifty holiday cottages in 2016, Eller How House is the self-contained West wing of an unusual Regency House. The house and grounds were designed in the 1820's by the architect George Webster as his family home. There are many unusual features, from the ornate plasterwork in the first floor sitting room to the collection of 'heads' holding up the ceiling in the master bedroom. You can explore the woods directly from the house and have access out onto the fell with magnificent views.

The accommodation comprises; Paved courtyard with table and chairs for eating out and views to magnificent cedar tree.

Ground floor-large entrance hall with coat hooks, well stocked kitchen /dining room, utility room with washer/dryer and second fridge and freezer. Double bedroom with en suite shower room with W.C. and basin.

Twin/zip-link double bedroom with large en suite shower room, basin and W.C. Inner hall with stairs up to first floor landing with table and bookshelves and double doors to large, comfortable sitting room with marble open fireplace and decorative plasterwork. Cloakroom with WC and basin. Large treble aspect double bedroom with veranda. En suite bathroom with free-standing cast iron roll top bath, W.C. and basin.

We have chosen the furniture and pictures, a mixture of antique and modern to compliment the character of the house.

Eller How House is a holiday destination in itself, set in its own beautiful woodland with space for families or friends to relax. It is an all year round destination with autumn and winter a great time for a short, relaxing break. We offer a long week-end package or why not try a mid-week (four night) stay and enjoy days walking or sightseeing. During the winter the property is enchanting in the snow (we have a couple of sledges which you are welcome to use) and you can spend the evenings round a roaring log fire. In the Spring we have beautiful bulbs in the woodland, you can picnic or campfire in the woods during the summer months and relish the autumn colours later in the year. You might be lucky enough to watch otters in the lake or catch a glimpse of a slow-worm sunbathing in the rocks. There are plenty of birds too, from buzzards circling overhead to tiny gold crests in the yew trees.

Ramble through the twelve acres of mixed woodland and discover ruined follies and catch glimpses of the sea, then out on to the fell, where you can climb up and see a panorama of Lakeland fells, Yorkshire Dales and across the Bay.

We ask for a deposit of 20% of the rental cost to secure the booking with the balance payable eight weeks before the start of your stay.

During holiday times your stay must be a week long, usually Friday to Friday but we are flexible with lengths and starts of stay during the rest of the year.

About John and Helen Churchill

We are a couple who have lived and worked in this area for more than thirty years. Our children have been brought up and educated locally and consider themselves to be Cumbrians. We really enjoy living at Eller How with its magical atmosphere and constantly changing natural environment.

Why John and Helen Churchill chose Windermere & Central Lakes

We fell in love with Eller How on a wet November Saturday. The pretty façade with its decorated barge-boards, the fantastic, large rooms with their charming details, and, most of all the enchanting woodland with its meandering paths and ruined follies all drew us in. We can walk out onto the fell above the house in ten minutes and have a 100 degree breath-taking, panoramic view of the Lake District fells, the Yorkshire fells and on a clear day, the Isle of Man. The nearby town of Grange-over-Sands has superb local shops with excellent produce and the pretty village of Cartmel has excellent places to eat.

What makes this cottage unique

Coming back to Eller How after any time away be it a day at work or a holiday away makes us realise how lucky we are to live some-where so magical. The woods are constantly changing and the house, with its unusual features is really special. It is large and cosy at the same time suitable for the two of us and for the many visitors, family and friends who come and stay.

Please note that care should be taken on the balcony and that there is unfenced water (a small lake) in the grounds. You can pic-nic or have a camp-fire in the woods (please ask for the grills and equipment to use on the fire). We have secure storage for bicycles, please ask for the key (please don't store bikes in the house). Good for star gazing.

Fairytale beauty

This home is amazing and the property is stunning. It was exceptionally clean - which is very important to me. The owners do indeed live next door but you won't see them unless you want to. The internet was a bit of a problem but quite honestly this is not the type of place where you should go if wifi is a priority. The owners did their best to fix the connection and I am confident they did after we left. The house is very large and spacious. It felt like living on an estate. The positive reviews are all consistent and I suspect it's because this place is phenomenal. It is centrally located to some amazing places (Sizergh Castle and Farm, Levens’ Hall - both of which were suggested by Helen and John). There is also an amazing walking trail that cuts through several of the small villages on the way to Sizergh- simply pull off the highway and look for signs.

If you are in the area and the home is available - jump on it!

Great Stay will go again

This is a beautiful place to stay. We felt at home immediately. Everything you need is there and very well looked after. Loved the log fire.The surrounding land is lovely and the whole experience was very relaxing. It's an ideal place from which to explore the Lake District and surrounding areas.

Ellen How House is simply stunning, with the lovely gardens it has everything for a relaxing stay.

We really enjoyed our stay at Eller How House. We booked this to celebrate my husband's birthday with his parents and brother. The host, Helen, was so welcoming and made sure we had everything needed to enjoy our stay. She was great at communicating ahead of time and the cake to help us celebrate really added a special touch. The grounds are lovely and there is so much to see and do in the surrounding area of the beautiful Lake District. It was really lovely to sit in the library around the fire as a family reading books or playing cards games.

I would highly recommend a stay at Eller How House, it truly is a special place unlike anywhere I've ever stayed before.

A fantastic property with wonderful grounds - Loved it!

We have just come back after staying a week in this wonderful house with friends of ours and can only say what a lovely property it is. First impressions driving up to it are WOW!

We stayed there with our 9 year old son and friends of ours and their similarly aged son, and the boys found so many things to do in the woods and the lake... from building dens to making their own fishing rods and seeing if they could catch anything in the lake (not much chance with a bamboo stick and some string, but you can't fault them for trying).

The house itself was quite amazing... not least the upstairs lounge which was like something you'd find in a stately home, with everything throughout being lovely and clean and well equipped. There was also a very well received Victoria Sponge waiting for us on arrival which was a lovely touch. If the boys enjoyed exploring the grounds, then my favourite activity was just sitting in the late afternoon sun on the balcony sipping a G&T and just taking in the views.

Although the property is situated away from it all, it is also conveniently close to main transport links and the nearby town of Grange Over Sands, which we drove to on a number of occasions to sample their selection of takeaways and re-stock on supplies in the coop there. There is also a pub not far from the house, but as there was so much on offer at Eller How we never actually got there. Since the owners live next door, there was also the comfort knowing that should we require any help or advice then this was never far away if we'd needed it.

All in all it was a thoroughly enjoyable week and I would happily return for another visit.

Beautiful place in the Lake District!

Our family spent four nights in this magical place. The grounds are beautiful and the home very spacious. We were greeted with a freshly made cake. The owners are kind and very accommodating! This house has a drawing room that takes you right back to Victorian times. We didn't want to leave. Highly recommended. Close to all of the Lake District wonders.

The Lake District is one of the most beautiful parts of the United Kingdom, with its mountains and green fertile valleys, it has inspired the Romantic poets, such as Wordsworth and Coleridge and artists from Turner to Ruskin, who built his home on the shores of Lake Coniston. Visitors from all over the world come to immerse themselves in the scenery, to walk, climb or enjoy water sports.

We are ideally situated for walking on the Southern fells or water sports on Windermere and Coniston. Ambleside is half an hour away and you can be in the northern lakes in less than an hour.

The historic village of Cartmel with its Priory and racecourse is within easy reach, as are the shops at the Victorian resort of Grange over Sands. For garden lovers Levens Hall and Holker Hall are both essential visits. The National Trust estates at Fell Foot and Sizergh Castle are nearby. Beatrix Potter’s house at High Sawrey is less than half an hour drive away.

For food lovers L'Enclume, Michellin star winner, is five minutes away, whilst those who want more modest fare will find plenty of good quality pubs and gastropubs in the area. Shopping for good quality, locally produced food is easy with shops in Grange, Cartmel (sticky toffee pudding) and at Sizergh Barn there are branches of Booths Supermarkets at Ulverston, Windermere and Kendal.

There are sea views from the summer house in the grounds and stupendous views of the Lakeland hills ten minutes walk up the fell behind the house.
