About the property

2 doubles, 1 single, terrace, life guarded & dog friendly beach & SW Coast path

Just about 1/2 a mile on foot (or a minute by car) you find yourself at Trebarwith Strand beach, recognised as one of the best beaches in Cornwall, not just North Cornwall. In 2014 it received the 'Good Beach Guide' Recommendation for Excellent water quality. Additionally, it is one of the few beaches that is dog-friendly year round.

As Treknow is a small quiet hamlet just over a mile from Tintagel, with no shops, cars may easily be parked on the road outside the house where there are no restrictions.

From the house, it is an 8-10 minute walk down to the beach, via either the Coast Path or just 1 minute down the road, which is excellent for swimming and surfing. If you have little ones, we suggest taking the car down, and parking in the car parks provided at Trebarwith Strand, as the path isn't flat, and the roads are narrow (single track with passing places)! It’s also an amazing place for walking, or just lazing about and reading or having a picnic.

For those who enjoy nature beyond the beach, bird watching along the cliffs is excellent and on nearby Davidstow Moor and Bodmin Moor there are some truly beautiful walks. The house has books and maps with information on both.

Puffins consists of the main room, three bedrooms (the main double, a smaller double and a single room; please note the single room is small and there is limited storage in that room) and a full bathroom (tub and power shower). On the terrace, there is a retractable washing line which is a good place to dry anything BUT wetsuits / swimsuits. They are too heavy for the drying line, but putting them on chairs, the fence, etc gives them an excellent place to dry in the bright sun the patio gets. No expense has been spared -- the main two beds are from Loaf and Warren Evans, and all bed linens are from Loaf (www.loaf.com). The furniture throughout is from Loaf, Neptune, French Connection or a few local boutiques, and is to a high standard. After all, Puffins is our retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world too, so we want to feel pampered there as well.

The house has unlimited wi-fi, a DVD / Blu-Ray player, cable, a TV, an iPod dock and radio, books and all the things that would make a fun holiday for people of all ages. Puffins is ideal for 2-4 people (although there are beds for 5, please note we allow no more than 4 guests in Puffins Also, the 2nd and 3rd bedrooms are connected by a door between them both, which allows for extra room for bed 2 if it is two couples, and bedroom three can be used more as a dressing room.) If you have 2 children (over the age of 7 only), one in the single bed in room 3, and one in the double in room 2 works out well.

A pretty walk down the hill is a very good pub, The Mill House Inn, with both a pub menu and an excellent restaurant. They also do live music some nights. At the beach is The Port William Inn, called by many ‘the best pub with a view over the sea in Cornwall’. It is a wonderful place to watch the sun going down and serves a wide range of different foods and snacks which are better than standard pub fare. It has both indoor and outdoor seating.

Additionally, in the summer the café next to the beach has fantastic homemade food and good coffee, and next to the Seagull Surf Shop they sell freshly made doughnuts.

The nearest shops are in Tintagel which is just over one mile away, and then Camelford and Wadebridge if you wish to do a larger shop. Boscastle and Port Isaac are also close, where there are lots of different restaurants, pubs and shops. Rock is about a 20-minute drive away, and you can take the ferry across the Camel Estuary to Padstow from there, which is lovely for a day out. You can go sea-fishing and boating from any of these.

In Padstow, you will find Rick Stein’s restaurants and cafés and his famous fish and chips. Rock also has the famous Nathan Outlaw's restaurant. There are bicycles are for hire in Wadebridge so you can cycle along the Camel trail or anywhere you like!

Like a bit more activity on your holiday? Then enjoy surfing at Trebarwith Strand or Polzeath, Tennis at Tintagel tennis courts, golf at St Endoc, skateboarding at the Tintagel Playing Fields, kayaking / coasteering / stand up paddling, cycling riding on the Camel Way, or why not even try some horse riding on the Moors?

Why Kristine Kirby or Simon Gray chose North Cornwall

Good question! We live in a lovely older property most of the time, but were taken with the amazing architecture of Puffins, and the location, which we think is the best in the world. After many years of coming to North Cornwall for our own holidays, we decided to buy a little place that not only we could enjoy, but hopefully others as much as us. The house is filled with everything you need to feel at home, from a fully stocked kitchen, to books, games, and lots of local information to help you make the most of your stay.

What makes this house unique

The architecture and light of Puffins is so unique to us, but mostly we love North Cornwall. And Treknow is a lovely little village with a small pub, the South West Coast Path, one of the best beaches in Cornwall a 1 minute drive, or 5 minute walk away at Trebarwith Strand, and that is it. But while stores are only a bit more than mile away in Tintagel (and the amazing castle, and some of the best pasties on earth), you truly are in a beautiful, quiet village at Puffins. It isn't as overrun as Polzeath or Rock or Padstow, but all are close by, and this beach is a true find - the locals like to keep it to themselves! Perfect for sitting & relaxing, or taking some surf lessons, Treknow is ideally located in North Cornwall. And the historic village of Port Issac is about 6 miles away, a beautiful drive the whole way there.

However, with everything so close, you can be as active as you want, or as lazy as you desire, but no matter what you wish to be you are no more than 20 minutes from everywhere delightful in North Cornwall!

  • Please note the 3rd bedroom is a single. Therefore, 4 is the right number of guests for Puffins, and all we will allow. However, the 3rd bedroom makes for an excellent wardrobe / storage room. The 3rd bedroom is connected by a doorway to the 2nd double room, so if you have two children, it does work to have a child in each, so they are not sharing a bed, and if it is two couples, it is an excellent extension bedroom 2 as a wardrobe and seating space. However, please note the single bed is on a raised platform and not ideal for elderly or very young guests (under the age of 5).

The patio area is perfect to be enjoyed on beautiful sunny days or for grilling in the evenings. The beautiful modern architecture is bright with high ceilings and skylights, so you can see the lovely colours of the Cornish sky or all the stars at night. Puffins has won awards from the Royal Institute Of British Architects.

Really lovely holiday home, with everything we needed for a relaxing 3 night break.

The home was very comfortable with modern decor that was fitting for a coastal holiday. The only reason for not giving 5 stars is the location, there are no local shops within walking distance, and the approach via The MillHouse Inn was very tight (we drove via Tintagel village other times to avoid this). Would stay again for a peaceful country retreat.

Thank you for the kind words, taking the time to do a review, and to share information on your stay that can help others. We do mention in the house description page on Home Away that you view before booking that there are no shops in Treknow, as it is just a small hamlet of houses. Most guests either do one large shop or many walk on the coast path to Tintagel, and you can get to many different shops in Tintagel, the walk is about 20 minutes, and even if going very slow and looking to take photos, it is 30 minutes. Or 2 minutes by car. If staying for a week, you can also order online and have groceries delivered. I'm sorry that we didn't make the location of shops in proximity to Puffins clearer, and I will review how and where that information is on the page, as I don't want other guests to expect things that we didn't explain clearly - that isn't ideal at all! We do hope you stay again for a peaceful retreat in the country, yet close to the sea; now that you know the area better, we can direct you to some more specific places for you!

Ideal holiday home

My partner & I booked Puffins for 2 weeks and, along with our teenage son had a truly wonderful time here. The property is lovely, comfortable and ideally situated for visiting Tintagel and surrounding area. The beds were fabulous and there was ample clean towels & facilities to make this a memorable stay. If we had to mention any issues it would be with parking, having to park further up the hill throughout our stay as there was never space to park opposite Puffins or outside; but this was only a minor thing & certainly didn't hamper us in any way. The only other thing would be lack of storage but I think this was because there was 3 of us staying for 2 weeks, i guess this would not cause any problems for anyone staying less than this.

Anyway, an absolutely lovely holiday home, very clean & welcoming. Highly recommend it & would most certainly stay again. Thank you Kristine & Simon, you have a stunning home.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write a review, it helps us and other travellers when deciding where to stay! As for parking, we don't generally find it an issue, but as there are narrow lanes, if you aren't used to them, you may not be used to the 'tricks' to park - you can park on the side of the house on that tiny lane, there is enough room for a car, and you don't block the garage there. You can also park in front of the doors next to the stairs where the bins and wood are; the granite sign about advises people not to park there as when we first bought the house we found people did, but we had the sign put up and that put paid to that, so we've never parked there, but if friends do, we have them leave a note on their windscreen that they are staying in Puffins and therefore are blocking their own doors. People always comment on how comfy the beds are, and I have to say I forget until we go to stay, and then I remember how lovely they are! Thank you for saying our house is stunning, and we'd love to welcome you again!

The cottage was exactly what we were hoping it would be and the dogs loved it too

Owner's Response: We love all of North Cornwall, but thought the location too ideal - so close to the the SouthWest Coastal Path, then the short walk (or take the handbrake off and roll less than a minute!) down the hill to the pub overlooking Trebarwith Strand - one of the few beaches that does allow dogs year round! Glad you found the location as perfect as we do.

Comfortable accommodation in a good location

The property is a nice as the description implies and we were very comfortable (family with teenage adults).

The location is great too.

Parking might be an issue on the narrow lanes but we were there on a busy bank holiday weekend and didn't really have a problem.

Great find

It was Easter Sunday and I was looking online for short breaks when I came across Puffins. I enquired and was very pleased that Kristine answered any questions I had right away. We had a long journey to get there and it was much appreciated that Kristine gave us the option to leave later on the day we went home. The area was very picturesque with great local attractions, and after a long day of exploring there was nothing better than relaxing in the comfy beds! Would definitely visit again! Just what we needed...

We needed a lovely quiet break where we could unwind, and Puffins did just that for us. The house was just as advertised, and when we had to contact Kristine for a question, she answered right away and was very helpful.

The beds were so comfortable, so much so we emailed to ask where they were from, and the bed linen was soft and lovely, a real treat after a day walking or at the beach. We slept like babies, and longer than we usually would. Must have been all that Cornish fresh air!

The kitchen was fully kitted, so some nights we brought things locally and cooked and watched Wimbledon highlights, or just sat and read and had some wine or local cider and enjoyed the view and the sounds.

The house is very nicely decorated, you can tell that it is someone's much loved home, and not just a holiday home decorated to the bare minimum. All the tips that they shared with us as well for things to go do, or restaurants to try out were spot on, and it felt a bit like we had a personal guide.

We will certainly be recommending Puffins, and are already looking at coming again in the autumn, as we want to try that lovely wood burning stove out!
