About this property

Peaceful But Centrally Located Dordogne Farmhouse with private heated pool..

LA PERODE:
La Perode is a recently renovated collection of old farm buildings nestling within the rolling Dordogne countryside, centrally located for a wide range of holiday activities. Built from the beautiful honey-coloured limestone that is a feature of the region, our Bread Oven (Maison du Pain) has enjoyed a major renovation which has brought the facilities up to exacting modern standards and provides exclusive use of the site facilities including the large, heated swimming pool. Set within ten acres of fields and woodland it is wonderfully peaceful, safe and cosy retreat whilst being central to all that the Dordogne region can offer.

FACILITIES:
The Maison-du-Pain (literally Bread House) is estimated to be at least 150-years old and underwent a three-year refurbishment that was completed in 2013. With the new extension it consists of five bedrooms and three bathrooms alongside a well-appointed kitchen and dining / living area that augments the two private terraces. The bedrooms range from a large en-suite four-poster with its own quiet terrace, through a spacious bedroom with high ceilings and exposed beams plus a lovely private balcony, to another double bedroom, again with exposed beams located within the old part of the building. A cosy children’s room sleeps up to three whilst a loft room with low timbers offers a great retreat for a teenager, so there is ample space for one or two extended families. A cot and high chair are also available, on request.
Central heating was installed in 2018 added for the comfort of low season clients.

Outside there is a large private terrace and seating area, partially covered, complete with BBQ and the original bread oven itself. A comfortable eight-seat round table with large umbrella provides the opportunity for wonderful alfresco dining and this sheltered and private area is a delight come morning, noon or night-time. Feel free to contact the owners who will be more than happy to help.

There are a wide selection of attractions for all the family within a short drive, whilst in-house facilities include a flat screen TV (with surround-sound), UK (or French) satellite channels plus a wide selection of DVD’s available on request. Wireless internet is available throughout the site, although we do hope you can leave the office behind.
A small handful of bikes are available, subject to a polite request to the owners, although a range of bikes can be rented locally or even delivered to site.

SWIMMING POOL:
During your stay you will enjoy exclusive use of the large 12m x 6m heated swimming pool (with easy access at one end via Roman steps) which for child safety is surrounded by a security fence. An automated pool cover was installed in 2022 to further enhance safety and maintain comfortable water temperatures. Adjacent to the pool is a summer kitchen that provides for the preparation and cooking of meals, whilst the overall pool area enjoys plenty of chairs and loungers for sun worshippers alongside shady nooks for the more sensitive of skin. The additional shower, toilet and games facilities may well result in much of your holiday being spent in this well-appointed area.

LOCAL FACILITIES:
The nearby village of Rouffignac is a short drive (or pleasant walk) away and can provide everything from your daily baguette to your weekly shop. Facilities include a boulangerie (specialising in exquisite pastries), a butcher and a supermarket, whilst several bar / restaurants provide a pleasant distraction, as does the busy weekly market on Sunday mornings. Although this market is held throughout the year, at the height of season it is not to be missed and the same market square hosts a number of night markets and other events over July and August. The Office de Tourisme is located near to the Mairie (Town Hall) although plenty of booklets are on hand to tempt you into day trips for sightseeing and partaking of the various local activities.

FURTHER A FIELD:
Nearby towns include Montignac and Le Bugue, which both sit astride the wonderful Vezere river. The world-famous Lascaux caves can be found near the former and for those interested in our Paleolithic ancestry they are a must-see, whereas Le Bugue offers a range of attractions including a superb aquarium and the Bournat theme park.
Regional capital Perigueux offers comprehensive shopping and tourist attractions and within an hour’s drive you will discover the delights of Bergerac and historical Sarlat. Much closer is Les Eyzies, a lovely village and site of the National Prehistoric Museum, and also a place where you can hire a canoe or kayak and enjoy a river picnic. Not forgetting the many local restaurants that will delight you with Perigordine specialities, and the vast vineyard regions where the famous Bergerac and Bordeaux appellations can be tasted.

Home from home, but much better!
We had a wonderful stay here. The Villa had everything we could need and the pool area was a popular hangout for BBQ, late night swimming and star gazing with the kids. Alec et Annie couldn’t have been more welcoming, it felt like we were visiting family. They gave brilliant advice and information. We were able to balance exploring the area and further afield to appreciate the beauty of the Dordogne, canoeing lots, and relaxing at the villa on other days. Would definitely recommend and visit again. Thank you

Truly special holiday
We had a fantastic week here with the whole family including a 2 year old and a 5 month old. Alec and Annie were extremely welcoming and accommodating to our requests which we are so grateful for. The pool was an absolute joy for everyone and all the little details had been thought of so we could fully relax with the kids. On top of the fantastic house, the location is superb - we had no where near enough time to see everything in the region so we will have to come back! Bergerac is beautiful, the many caves are amazing, the village is lovely and the nearby campsite has a little play park which the kids loved. A special holiday that we will not forget. Thank you Alec and Annie

Great family holiday and excellent pool facility
We had a great holiday at La Perode. Alec and Annie were attentive hosts but not "in your face". The pool area is wonderful - a really good sized pool, super safe fencing and child proof gate, and everything you need in one place so you don't need to leave for snack and toilet runs.

About the host

Alec and Annie - a retired engineer and his potter wife who likes to cook and eat off the land. Having bought the property in 2007 we have been living here permanently since 2010 and have been heavily involved (i.e. hands-on) with the development throughout. If you want to know how to install a septic tank or acquaint yourselves with French plumbing methods, then just ask! Although living on site a great deal of attention has been paid to privacy, having enjoyed many years of family holidays ourselves where we just wanted to ‘escape’. Please rest assured that we will be as unobtrusive as is humanly possible and are only here to ensure that your stay is trouble-free and totally relaxing.

Why they chose this property

What makes this property unique

Very quiet, standing within its own 10 acres but surrounded by many hectares of woods and farmland - but at the same time the local town is within easy reach and can satisfy most of our daily needs. You have exclusive use of all the facilities on offer and for leisure, it is on the doorstep to some wonderful attractions. The nearby Vezere valley is outstanding, offering kayaking / canoeing trips and the whole region offers a wide range of interesting towns and villages, pre-history sites and beautiful scenery. Regional capital city Perigueux is less than half an hour's drive and provides many cultural, shopping and tourist activities.
