About Cliff House

Welcome to luxury holidays in Devon - and a hugely more enjoyable, and modern way to enjoy self catering whilst on holiday in the West Country. Cliff House has been designed and equipped to provide you with the “feel” and modernity of a boutique hotel whilst at the same time allowing you the comforts of being totally independent. Cliff House is one of the oldest houses in the village, brimming with extensive period features and character, including stone walls, flagstone floors, original timber beams, doors and fireplaces. Recently redecorated, doors from virtually all the rooms lead out to the secluded terraces or balconies that make the most of the wonderful seaviews and track the sun all day long. Several reception rooms means that everyone has room to relax and four large bedrooms sleep 8 in comfort. Spacious, light-filled and very welcoming, this house really is a must for those looking for something special.

Located on the top of the cliff, the stunning views across the sea are uninterrupted ; from the Mew Stone and the mouth of the Dart Estuary, sweeping around Start Bay and including Slapton Sands and Ley to Start Point Lighthouse and over the beautiful South Hams countryside. From local croissants and coffee at breakfast to the very last glass of Sharpham’s wine before bed you will find it hard to tear yourself away from an ever-changing vista of boats, sunrises, sunsets, seagulls and stars – all accompanied by the soporific breaking of the waves directly below.

Cliff house is the ideal location for an extended family or two families holidaying together who are looking for relaxation right by the sea, but close enough to Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Salcombe, if you are feeling more energetic.

The accommodation at Cliff House comprises of plenty of space for everyone to be able to relax and enjoy themselves with a family room, drawing room, sitting room and dining room. A large, modern kitchen adjoins a morning sun room/wet room and lobby alongside a downstairs WC/shower room. Upstairs, there are four large bedrooms [one king-size, one double and two twins] , two of which have balconies and stunning seaviews. There are two en-suite bathrooms [ one with a further balcony] as well as a separate WC. There is also a lovely upstairs sitting area with French windows.

Further details about the house includes;

Ground Floor: Entrance door into a decked walk-through sunroom with plenty of storage for all your wet suits/body boards/beach stuff. Delightful L-shaped family room with inset woodburner and sofas, and includes our art gallery [see more details on this later]. The dining room with a large table has patio doors to the terrace and spectacular views. A central hallway opens out to the seaward side of the house, off which are two further comfortable sitting /drawing rooms both amply furnished with sofas; one for children and provided with games, TV / DVD and featuring an ornamental fireplace; the other, a more formal room for 'grown-ups' and featuring an open fireplace, music system and ipod speakers. Both rooms have feature window seats and sea views. The new fully fitted, well equipped kitchen overlooks Slapton Sands/Ley and Torcross and has a range cooker with double oven and grill, integrated dishwasher, microwave, American fridge/freezer and radio. A utility cupboard houses a washing machine and tumble dryer. Downstairs Cloakroom with shower, basin and WC.

Upstairs: Master bedroom, with kingsize bed, French doors to balcony and glorious en-suite bathroom with bath, separate shower, heated towel rail, WC and basin with a further door to another balcony. Double bedroom with en-suite shower room with shower, basin and WC. Spacious twin bedroom with wash basin and stunning views over the sea, Slapton Ley and Torcross. Further twin bedroom with hand wash basin and French doors to balcony and sea views. Landing with quiet seating area with views through French doors to balcony. Separate Cloakroom with basin and WC.

We have begun an art gallery within the family room and you will find that there are empty frames already hung on the wall and water colours/paper and a table top easel available. Please paint or draw us a picture, sign and date it and put it in one of the frames....at the end of the year, which ever one we judge the best at depicting a holiday at cliff house, will win 50% off a week's holiday back with us in cliff house the following year [excluding July/August/Xmas]. So, don't be shy - unleash the inner artist in yourselves.....

Throughout the house there are plenty of local books, O.S maps, board games, cushions, candles and throws. Please make plenty of use of everything – we really want you to feel at home and relax. After all, it’s your holiday, and you deserve it!

Included: Duvets, pillows, bed linen, towels (not beach towels) night storage heating , electricity. The telephone is free to use for local calls, but calls to national, international, premium rate or mobiles will be charged and deducted from the security deposit. Wireless broadband is also free to use but you must bring a wireless-enabled laptop to use it. Please note that mobile reception is patchy. We do have one travel cot [with a basic travel mattress] but no linen for it and 2 travel high chairs that attach to the dining room chairs. They are suitable for babies that can sit up un-aided and up to 15kgs.

No smoking

Dogs – we accept two, well behaved dogs @ £25 per dog per booking. Please note – the dogs are not allowed upstairs or on the furniture, and we expect the garden to be free of any unwelcome “presents” on departure! Dogs are allowed on Slapton sands all year round.

Further details outdoors:

Outside, there is a secluded Mediterranean-style garden with terraces and balconies providing different vantage points for the panoramic sea and beach views. The kitchen, sun room and Ley Terrace capture the morning sun, the first floor balconies, Garden Terrace and Lookout enjoy sun throughout the day, while the Lighthouse and Western terraces are ideal for the setting sun. There is a BBQ provided but you will need to bring your own charcoal. Please note that the Lookout patio is perched on the edge of the cliff, and whilst all of the garden is railed, supervision of all young children whilst in the garden is required. There is plenty of outdoor seating and a mature tree and other shrubs offer shade as required. Finally, from the garden you can descend the 69 steps onto the beach/promenade and into the village or, go the other way , and go down onto Cove beach.

Approached by its own lane there is parking for 2 cars.

About the Owner

We had been looking for a holiday property for some time before we found Cliff House in Torcross. It is a spectacular property with panoramic sea views, white washed walls, open fireplaces, first floor balconies and terraced gardens which together create a unique coastal property with a lovely 'beach house' laid back ambiance. Cliff House is still used today by the Royal Navy as a navigation aid and some of the training for the D-Day landings was overseen from the house. We loved its location ,its history and importantly for us, dogs are allowed on many of the local beaches all year round.

When we were trying to decide how we needed to furnish Cliff House, each member of the family had to say what was important to them- particularly when you're on holiday. The results were illuminating! My husband said a decent sized t.v and a good pub in walking distance [surprise, surprise!], my children wanted an internet connection and an ipod docking station and I wanted sparkling bathrooms, a well-equipped kitchen [if only for breakfasts!] and ready made-up beds. We also wanted the furnishings and accessories within the house to reflect and highlight its location on the Devon coast.

When you stay at Cliff House, hopefully, the only things you’ll have to bring are your clothes, some food and drink and an appetite for enjoying yourselves...oh, and a sense of humour/patience for driving around the Devon lanes. Welcome to a modern self-catering holiday in Devon - and welcome to our home at the coast, we know you’ll love it.

Thank you. Staying at Cliff House exceeded our expectations - we all had a wonderful holiday. The house is perfect for an extended family. There are plenty of rooms so although we had three people who had to work/study for part of the time, they could find a quiet place and the babies could play and make noise without disturbing them.

We enjoyed two meals at the Britannia at Beesands, a couple of lunches at the farm shop on the way to Stokenham, crab sandwiches at the Start Bay Inn, but found the kitchen at Cliff House very well equipped and we all took turns cooking dinner the rest of the time and were grateful to relax afterwards over a couple of glasses of wine, and not have to negotiate the narrow lanes to return home. Although the weather was mixed, it didn't stop us getting out for walks and we had two rucksacks to carry the babies in. I especially enjoyed the longer walk to the lighthouse. We also managed to visit Dartmouth, Salcombe and Sharphams Vineyard.

It was kind of Quintin to say that we were good guests (we tried to look after the house as though it belonged to us). He is very personable and approachable - well suited to what he is doing.

We would love to return in a few years (we are saving the tractor ride over to Burgh Island until the boys are a little older).

We love Cliff House!!

We had a wonderful stay at Cliff House. Torcross is such a delightful place, but staying at Cliff House made it even better because of the stunning vistas! What a view of of the bay! Absolutely stunning views from all aspects of the house but in particular the master bedroom suite with wonderful views out to lovely cove beach from the luxurious en suite bathroom. The house had great amenities too and there was plenty of space to unwind and relax. The outdoor balconies and terraces were very special and a great place to admire the views, soak up some sun and enjoy a glass of bubbly or two! Our dog also had a great time as there was plenty of space for him to run about and with the steps down to cove beach just a stones throw away, he had a great time running on the beach and swimming in the sea. Our only criticism of Cliff House is that we can't live there permanently!! We highly recommend Cliff House and will definitely be returning in the near future

Owner's Response: We have dogs ourselves so we never have a problem with dogs staying here at Cliff House. They are part of our family which means they have to come on holiday too! The garden is enclosed and there are two beaches just minutes away which they can go on all year round. There are also many local pubs which also welcome dogs so it just makes your stay here all the more relaxing. So you will want to come back. And, so will the dogs.

Beautiful, spacious, relaxing, well equipped

The nicest place we've ever stayed! Location perfect with glorious views and beach only a couple minutes walk climbing down the steps. We stayed with 4 teenagers, a dog and parents- it was lovely to have the space to relax- lots of different sitting areas inside and out- a pool table as well as wetsuits, bikes, surfboard and a large undercover porch area for muddy boots, dog to sleep, etc- it seemed everything had been thought of and the place was simply but beautifully furnished. I particularly liked the patio area and the master bathroom with bath overlooking the views and lighthouse! Half an hour from any bigger shops but we found that wasn't needed with a corner shop and very good farm shop (Stokely- fresh veg, bread, deli and brewery) within 5 mins, fantastic cafe (Seabreeze- fab cakes/scones) and some lovely pubs locally- 1 at the foot of the cliff; another 1 mile's walk along the beach; several in the local villages of Slapton (we particularly liked The Tower Inn) and Stokenham as well as the fish shack (Brittania, BYO) at Beesands- recommended to book tho the latter also does take-away. Gara Rock and Dartmouth castle cream teas were to die for and gorgeous coastline walks to walk them off plentiful. The owner was also very helpful and easy to communicate with. What could be better then walking the coastal path and then stopping for refreshments with a wide choice of local beers and wine and seafood so fresh that tomorrow's menu is still in the sea? Other than, of course, starting with the pub and then doing the walk...!

Cliff house is a stunning property, situated in a lovely part of Devon with views that can't be beaten! Situated close to Dartmouth but also has access to (almost) your own private beach! Tastefully decorated, and equipped with everything you could possibly need. Great pub within easy walking distance, and great fishing too- I can not rate this property highly enough!!

Wonderful property in amazing location

We were a family group ,with 2 dogs, staying for 1 week in July. We loved Cliff House. A great layout for a mixed family group , with room for everyone to do their own thing if they wish.We appreciated the decor and furnishings - it is so good to find a self catering property that welcomes dogs that is attractively and comfortably furnished. The location is amazing - fantastic views , walks from the door ( straight onto coastal footpath), and shops/good pubs etc a very short drive away . Booking was straightforward , with very responsive service from owner.

The location was beautiful in November, but in May it was magical.

Always a warm welcome

Dolphins passed by on our first evening and a seal as we walked along the bay.

The setting is really hard to beat and everyone was touched by the house , the scenery and the weather.

Can't wait until the next time!

Owner's Response: The seal is now a permanent fixture in Cove Bay but the dolphins were a bonus. How fabulous to be able to see them from your own cliff top balcony and garden!

We had rented this property several times already, due to its fantastic location, wonderful views, and unique character. This time we were also able to enjoy the many improvements that have been made, both with tasteful interior decorations, but also more fundamental work to the facade and garden. A perfect location to explore the South Hams, discover Slapton Ley and Slapton sands, or simply enjoy the view.

Holidays in Devon have always had a nostalgic rosy glow about them, and Torcross is no exception.     Short breaks

    Short break holidays can normally be arranged outside of the main holiday periods at the following percentages of the weekly rate, 3 nights 70% (Friday to monday) 4 nights 80% (Monday to Friday), If you wish for a short holiday break that does not conform to these set dates, please do ring as we can be flexible in most cases.

    Deposits- We require a non-refundable deposit upon booking of 25% of the total rent. The balance is due 6 weeks (42 days) prior to the commencement of the holiday.
