About Cliff House
Welcome to luxury holidays in Devon - and a hugely more enjoyable, and modern way to enjoy self catering whilst on holiday in the West Country. Cliff House has been designed and equipped to provide you with the “feel” and modernity of a boutique hotel whilst at the same time allowing you the comforts of being totally independent. We have recently just shot a short film showing Cliff House and some of the places you can visit whilst you are here - see the Youtube link at the bottom of the page [below the facilities section] to watch 'A Postcard from Torcross'.
Cliff House is one of the oldest houses in the village, brimming with extensive period features and character, including stone walls, flagstone floors, original timber beams, doors and fireplaces. Recently redecorated, doors from virtually all the rooms lead out to the secluded terraces or balconies that make the most of the wonderful seaviews and track the sun all day long. Several reception rooms means that everyone has room to relax and four large bedrooms sleep 8 in comfort. Spacious, light-filled and very welcoming, this house really is a must for those looking for something special.
Located on the top of the cliff, the stunning views across the sea are uninterrupted ; from the Mew Stone and the mouth of the Dart Estuary, sweeping around Start Bay and including Slapton Sands and Ley to Start Point Lighthouse and over the beautiful South Hams countryside. From local croissants and coffee at breakfast to the very last glass of Sharpham’s wine before bed you will find it hard to tear yourself away from an ever-changing vista of boats, sunrises, sunsets, seagulls and stars – all accompanied by the soporific breaking of the waves directly below.
Cliff house is the ideal location for an extended family or two families holidaying together who are looking for relaxation right by the sea, but close enough to Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Salcombe, if you are feeling more energetic.

We had been looking for a holiday property for some time before we found Cliff House in Torcross. It is a spectacular property with panoramic sea views, white washed walls, open fireplaces, first floor balconies and terraced gardens which together create a unique coastal property with a lovely 'beach house' laid back ambiance. Cliff House is still used today by the Royal Navy as a navigation aid and some of the training for the D-Day landings was overseen from the house. We loved its location ,its history and importantly for us, dogs are allowed on many of the local beaches all year round.
When we were trying to decide how we needed to furnish Cliff House, each member of the family had to say what was important to them- particularly when you're on holiday. The results were illuminating! My husband said a decent sized t.v and a good pub in walking distance [surprise, surprise!], my children wanted an internet connection and an ipod docking station and I wanted sparkling bathrooms, a well-equipped kitchen [if only for breakfasts!] and ready made-up beds. We also wanted the furnishings and accessories within the house to reflect and highlight its location on the Devon coast.
When you stay at Cliff House, hopefully, the only things you’ll have to bring are your clothes, some food and drink and an appetite for enjoying yourselves...oh, and a sense of humour/patience for driving around the Devon lanes. Welcome to a modern self-catering holiday in Devon - and welcome to our home at the coast, we know you’ll love it.
Tracy and David Rist.

Cliff top location.
Beaches on two sides.
A different view from every balcony, patio, window.
Private, secluded garden.
Slapton Ley and coastal path, close to Dartmouth, Kingsbridge, Salcombe.
Sleeps 8, 2 dogs welcome, car parking.
Great local pub, restaurant, cafe, dog-friendly beaches.
Thank you. Staying at Cliff House exceeded our expectations - we all had a wonderful holiday. The house is perfect for an extended family. There are plenty of rooms so although we had three people who had to work/study for part of the time, they could find a quiet place and the babies could play and make noise without disturbing them.
We enjoyed two meals at the Britannia at Beesands, a couple of lunches at the farm shop on the way to Stokenham, crab sandwiches at the Start Bay Inn, but found the kitchen at Cliff House very well equipped and we all took turns cooking dinner the rest of the time and were grateful to relax afterwards over a couple of glasses of wine, and not have to negotiate the narrow lanes to return home. Although the weather was mixed, it didn't stop us getting out for walks and we had two rucksacks to carry the babies in. I especially enjoyed the longer walk to the lighthouse. We also managed to visit Dartmouth, Salcombe and Sharphams Vineyard.
It was kind of Quintin to say that we were good guests (we tried to look after the house as though it belonged to us). He is very personable and approachable - well suited to what he is doing.
We would love to return in a few years (we are saving the tractor ride over to Burgh Island until the boys are a little older).
We were away for a celebration of a special birthday & Mother's Day so we're very pleased with the accommodation and extras included. There is so much room in the house we could each have our own space if required with a bathroom to die for including amazing sea views all the way around the house. A lot of thought has gone into whT is required for a good holiday including beach toys etc. Highly recommended would love to go again!!!
The property was spacious but still very cosy, and well fitted.
It's situation was idyllic with incredible panoramic views of the coast,
and the area contains lots to do and see
What a great house to stay in with family and friends. Fantastic views from every room, lots of space for everyone and everything you could need for a 'home from home' stay. Lovely welcome pack and lots to do come rain or shine.
We had a fantastic New Year with friends in this amazing house. The location was stunning, literally on the edge of a cliff (but very safe with lots of fencing!), with views over beautiful beaches from both sides of the house (and from most of the rooms). The interior was beautiful with lots of interesting seaside related features and it was very thoughtfully equipped - both in the kitchen and beyond (lots of maps and walking guides which I always like!). If you come in the summer, there are even bikes and wetsuits on offer!
Although we were only there for 3 nights, we made the most of our stay, and did a lovely walk from Pawle Head to Start Point (left cars in both car parks!). Look out for the rare Cirl Buntings at Pawle Head and we also saw 2 seals near Start Point! There are also lots of walking routes from the house - at low tide you can walk westwards along the beach to Beesands. We had a lovely fishy lunch on New Year's Day at the Start Bay Inn - monkfish tails in garlic butter comes highly recommended!
Salcombe is a lovely place to explore and don't miss the Winking Prawn café on North Sands Beach - also a great walk from there to Bolt Head with fantastic views.
The house was very dog friendly with bowls provided and handy stair gate to prevent any visits upstairs! There was also a small outdoor area with high walls just outside the door so useful for letting the dog out into! And the two beaches within a minute's walk were very popular with Poppy! (especially the beach to the west which was sandy).
Would love to visit again soon!
We arrived in the dark .. we could hear the waves breaking below .. but it wasn't until sunrise the next morning that we could truly appreciate this house. The setting is simply stunning with a 180 degree view of Start Bay and Slapton Sands. We slept with curtains open because we wanted to be woken by the pink sun peering over the horizon. As owner of a rental ourselves, the best compliment we can pay Cliff House is that it feels more like a home than a rental. The spaces are beautifully furnished and tastefully decorated with nautical touches throughout (unlike some rentals where everything is vinyl /washable, nailed down with little character). Th kitchen is also extremely well equipped. Because it was mid winter we couldn't use the beach toys ut we would have no hesitation in coming back in the summer and / or recommending Cliff House to others.
We had a wonderful stay at Cliff House. Torcross is such a delightful place, but staying at Cliff House made it even better because of the stunning vistas! What a view of of the bay! Absolutely stunning views from all aspects of the house but in particular the master bedroom suite with wonderful views out to lovely cove beach from the luxurious en suite bathroom. The house had great amenities too and there was plenty of space to unwind and relax. The outdoor balconies and terraces were very special and a great place to admire the views, soak up some sun and enjoy a glass of bubbly or two! Our dog also had a great time as there was plenty of space for him to run about and with the steps down to cove beach just a stones throw away, he had a great time running on the beach and swimming in the sea. Our only criticism of Cliff House is that we can't live there permanently!! We highly recommend Cliff House and will definitely be returning in the near future
