Shearers Cottage

Shearers Cottage is the perfect base for walking, cycling, touring or just relaxing by a log fire

The cottage was sympathetically created from an ancient stone farm building retaining many original features such as beamed ceilings and exposed stonework. It has a large entrance hall, leading to the open plan lounge area with a large wood-burning stove and a well-equipped farmhouse kitchen and a dining area with French doors onto the patio and wildlife gardens beyond. The cottage also has a private garden to the side.

Upstairs there are 2 bedrooms, 1 double and 1 twin and a bathroom with bath and shower.

All the cottages were refurbished in 2010 with English Oak floors and new bathrooms and all have gas central heating as well as large wood-burning stoves/open fires.

The cottages have been rated 4 STAR by Visit England (formerly English Tourist Board) and are maintained to a high standard.

About the property

Kirkland Hall Cottages

Our self catering cottages have featured in Country Living Magazine's 'Great Escapes'. They are comfortable, well furnished and are maintained to the highest standards by the resident owners.

Each cottage was created from a range of ancient stone barns, a project which was voted 'the best barn conversion in the North of England'. All cottages have large wood burning stoves as well as gas central heating for that cosy night in by the fire.

The large informal gardens and pastures surrounding our holiday cottages are a haven for rabbits, badgers and red squirrels. They are host to dozens of species of migrant and resident birds including woodpeckers, tree creepers and nuthatches, whilst the Fells above us are home to skylarks, curlews, buzzards and peregrine falcons.

Perfect location, fantastic accommodation, wonderful welcome

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful, peaceful and brilliantly laid out, the cottages are incredibly well equipped for a luxuriously comfortable stay. Tremendous thought had been put into ensuring we had everything we needed - even down to laying on TWO red squirrels to watch during our first breakfast - and snow at Christmas! The walking from the doorstep, the birdlife, the layout of the cottage itself, logs to cut for a roaring fire, stunning views over fells and the garden - it really is blissful. I can't recommend kirkland hall cottages highly enough!

Stay in Shearers Cottage in Stember 2017

  • 4 of 5

This is a lovely very well equipped cottage with its own small garden situated at the foot of Cross Fell just ten miles from Penrith . We had a most enjoyable stay there and were able to explore the wonderful scenery in the Lake District with ease.

Keeps all it promises

  • 5 of 5

Despite mixed weather which prevented us from enjoying the beautiful garden in the evening we have spent a delightful week and can fully confirm that the cottage keeps everything the photos promise and we felt well-looked after by out warm-hearted hosts.

They have done a great job especially regarding the tasteful and cosy interior, which is really exceptional. Come and see for yourself, we will certainly be back some time.

An enjoyable stay. Kitchen well equipped. Property clean. Uncomfortable mattress.

  • 4 of 5

An enjoyable stay. Cottage beautifully situated at the foot of Cross Fell. Property clean, tidy and homely with an excellently equipped kitchen. Some milk and bread on arrival would have been appreciated as no local shop. Unfortunately the fridge wasn't working on arrival and was sorted by owner the following afternoon. Hot water on demand was very much appreciated and wood available for log fire. Was a little confused by laundry system as it stated in details that washer and dryer available but no suggestion of having to play extra for this. However, a notice in utility room asked for £2 per wash to be put in the electricity meter and similar system for the dryer. Unfortunately the mattress was very hard and uncomfortable which did not make for a good nights sleep.

Peaceful with plenty to see and do

  • 4 of 5

We had and our three children had a wonderful stay at Shearer's Cottage during the Easter holidays. The cottage was warm clean and comfortable. It was a totally peaceful and relaxing time with our boys playing down by the stream every morning after breakfast, climbing the fells and days out, we had a fantastic time. We will be back to stay! Thank you Ian and Lesley
