Overview

About the property

A charming, rural, peaceful 1 bedroom cottage

Adjoining a small working dairy farm, Le Petit Fournil was originally the central bakehouse here in the little hamlet of La Meynardie. Just 3 km from the bustling ancient town of Mareuil sur Belle, yet set in the heart of one of the most beautiful of National Forests it is the perfect location for enjoying stunning walks, cycling amongst fields of sunflowers, exploring the many forest tracks or simply relishing with a picnic, the peace and tranquillity found in this picturesque region of South West France.

This beautiful little bakehouse is the perfect romantic ‘hideaway’ for two! Being carefully redesigned and sympathetically furnished, it permits guests to enjoy all the pleasures of an open-plan, character filled country retreat with the integration of all modern-day amenities. A south facing terrace overlooks the meadow and lakes beyond.

Climate in South West France: In this corner of France we are generally regarded as enjoying a 'Micro Climate'; tucked well into the Bay of Biscay and generally out of the way of weather fronts coming up from the Atlantic. They say we have the second highest levels of sunshine in France and certainly you'll find the light is always clear and fresh. Spring comes early and temperatures can be in the 20's from March onwards: the skies are a piercing blue while the migrating birds pass overhead. Summer sees temperatures peaking on occasions up to 40 degrees, when, thankfully, the pool is there to keep you cool! Autumn is another wonderful time of the year in this Perigord region when colours of the autumn trees and hedgerows are exceptionally beautiful and the days are warm but the nights take on a chilly air. Even winter brings a quiet and sometimes cold air, misty days where the scent of burning oak hangs over the valleys until the sun burns through the winter skies and Spring is just around the corner.

Activities : BEACHES AND WATER PARK: River beaches: Aubeterre which is Approx 20 miles away has a lovely river beach with grassed play area, cafe and restaurant. St Aulaye (20 miles) has the same, together with water slides! Water park: 40 mins away in Augouleme, Nautilis water park with 50m indoor pools, diving pools, outdoor and indoor slides, wave machines. Large lake for fishing & water sports.

OTHER ACTIVITIES Canoeing, Golf, Riding, wine caves, rare wild flowers, migration of birds, exploring Chateaux's and their gardens.

Idyllic hideaway for two to enjoy rest and relaxation in a rural setting. Lots of places to visit within easy reach...Brantome, Bergerac and Perigueux were particular favourites with us.

A great host and warm welcome awaits.

The Perfect Relaxation

  • 5 of 5

This little hideaway really was everything mentioned and was holiday perfection. Sadly Julien and Charlotte were away during our stay but they had left everything promised and we appreciated the first breakfast as well as a few other treats. The gite is cosy and well equipped, with a comfortable bed, a great shower and lovely large towels. The pool was deliciously cool in the glorious weather and in the evenings we enjoyed using the hot tub. We bought cheese from the local farm and loved the market in Mareuil. While there we visited Brantome and spent several days cycling around the area. We are not fitness addicts but the gentle rolling hills in the area were a suitable challenge and we enjoyed the quiet roads as well as wooded trails and discovered beautiful chateaux too. We couldn't recommend this little place highly enough and it is undoubtedly one of the best value places we have stayed in.

The Perfect Rural Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a peaceful place to relax and we certainly found it here! The cottage, garden and surroundings are idyllic and contain everything you could wish for and more. Julien made us feel very welcome and was the ideal host. It was lovely having drinks on the terrace with him and Charlotte - and we really appreciated our introduction to oysters!

Our advice is if you want a romantic retreat this is the place for you!

Awesome!

  • 4 of 5

We stayed there during a lovely and sunny week in august...we hardly found the will to get out the garden, which is great at every hour of the day...Charlotte and Julien make everything they can to make you feel you're their special guest. It's the perfect place to make a break!

Clean friendly everything you could wish for

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this property for 2 weeks, charlotte and Julien could not be more helpful, we had a good time, they were exceptional hosts.

As they had not long purchased the property they were asking if everything was ok, the property was clean and tidy

We went to Charlottes parents house her mum taught me how to make macaroons,

We got fresh milk and cheese from the local farmer, this was way better than shop brought milk. (which I don't drink!)

Another good place was the wine cave in the village, Thierry was really helpful, if he could not find what you wanted he suggested alternatives, needless to say we spent a lot of time in the shop.

There are a lot of places to visit, there are some good restaurants which charlotte and Julien know. everybody we met were very friendly and helpful.

we even needed a mechanic, charlotte booked us in and we were only charged £10 euro, very reasonable

We were sorry to go home.

we would recommend this Gite and not hesitate to go back again

Discover the Dordogne; it’s captivating medieval towns and it’s romantic little bastide villages tucked away in the rolling hills and forests, alongside gently meandering rivers and pre historic caves. With a lovely climate enjoying generous levels of warm sunshine from spring right through to autumn, this is a region that can be thoroughly enjoyed throughout the whole year. Visit the many colourful markets for locally produced foie gras, truffles, goats cheese and strawberries to mention just a few - not forgetting the excellent Bergerac wines of course! You’ll find plenty of local fabulous restaurants where all these delicacies and more, to suit all tastes, are served to perfection!
