About the property

Near Florence & Siena, Sleeps 6+2, Glorious Hill Views.

Architecturally stunning house, protected by the Italian Ministry for Culture for its historic and cultural significance, sleeps 8.

Set in the idyllic Chianti countryside between Florence (c.26km) and Siena (c.40km). The pretty market town of Greve-in-Chianti, with a wide range of shops, cafés and restaurants, is just 3km away.

A former chapel, with medieval origins, and attached stone farmhouse, have recently been converted by a leading Italian architect and featured in Architectural Digest magazine. They sit at the heart of a tiny and ancient fortified hamlet, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, woodland and open fields. The house enjoys serene vistas all around, stretching to the Apuan Alps 70 miles away. Leonardo da Vinci was inspired by the scenery here in his landscape painting.

The house is far more than just a rental property: it is a home, lovingly decorated by skilled Italian fresco artists, furnished with a stylish mix of antique and contemporary pieces collected from our travels all over the world. There are hand-painted Italian ceramics, hand-made glass, local wood and wicker work, the latest in Italian design bathrooms - beautiful objects that reflect a life well lived. The rooms are filled with flowers, fragrant soaps, books, CDs, sheet music, board games, films...and other simple pleasures to reflect 'la dolce vita'. There is an 1885 Bluthner grand piano in the main sitting room.

The cultural sites of Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Monteriggioni, Montepulciano, Greve and the Chianti hill towns, medieval castles and wine estates are all nearby.

There are lovely outdoor swimming pools at Greve & seven interconnected pools at Quercegrossa.

Around the house are beautiful and extensive walking trails.

The area is very popular with cyclists and many itineraries are available.

Chianti is known for its outstanding wines and fine local cuisine.

House: 330sq.metres (total), on 2 main levels plus taverna.

Ground floor:

Impressive main sitting room in former church, leads to lovely covered loggia outside;

1 study-bedroom with double sofa-bed; shower room/toilet;

Second lounge/dining room (with table for 6), double doors to courtyard garden;

Farmhouse kitchen with large open fireplace, dishwasher, microwave;

Utility room (washing machine, dryer); guest toilet;

Lower ground:

Large taverna, with wine racks and dining table for 8;

First floor:

2 double bedrooms, 1 with en-suite shower room,

1 twin bedroom; guest bathroom (with shower).

In addition to the courtyard garden, there is a covered loggia for sitting outside, and a few minutes walk around vineyards takes you to the property’s field with fruit frees (suitable for ball games, etc.) and hillside woodland.

About Convertoie Bookings

The owner speaks English, Italian, some French, and has lived in Italy for many years.

Convertoie Bookings purchased this house in 2011

Why Convertoie Bookings chose Chianti

The extensive views here (reaching to the Apuan Alps 70km away) inspired Leonardo da Vinci's landscapes. The setting is idyllic and timeless, the light ever-changing, each season with its magic. The house, being a former church and canonic with medieval origins, is architecturally stunning and historic, yet with all mod cons. The place combines utter peace and tranquillity with easy access to some of the greatest cultural sites in the world.

What makes this house unique

Views and idyllic Chianti landscape, architectural features, stylish and high-quality decor, some of the best wines in Europe and great Tuscan food a stone's throw a way. Florence, Siena, art, history... What's not to like?

Guestbook comments from the owner

The property of the villa was breathtaking. Situated amongst typical Tuscan scenery in a historically significant location, Le Convertoie was a pleasure to stay at. We had a wonderful time waking up to the early calls of the roosters and finishing each day sipping the local wine! The location was splendid, for any Tuscan destination was short car ride away. Greve-in-Chianti, was also nearby and provided a great home base for travel. Kate was an amazing host and made sure that we were most comfortable with her house! Our stay here was unforgettable and hopefully we can return soon!

Perfect, impeccable, and an extraordinary location

  • 5 of 5

Such an incredible experience, we have already booked another two week stay for June next year.

I am not sure what I can add that has not already been said in the previous reviews. The location, house, and setting are amazing, and Kate was there to answer my emails and questions months in advance of our arrival (she booked reservations for our anniversary dinner, and also for a dinner in Rome).

For my wife and I, this was our third trip to Italy, and by far the most relaxing. For three others in the group it was their first trip, and it was an incredible experience for them. There is so much to see and do in the local area, but to just sit and relax at Le Convertoie and enjoy the peaceful surroundings was well appreciated by everyone. There are also several hiking trails around the property, we explored a few and more are on the list for next year’s visit.

As others mentioned, Kate is a wealth of knowledge and helped us with information on where to eat, and what to see. Her and Francesco were accommodating to our group’s needs, whether it was a day trip to Florence, or the incredible day long wine tour arranged (take advantage of this if you can) they were patient, and able to accommodate individual needs in the group.

The neighbors are lovely, genuine people. Marco's wine and olive oil are great, we enjoyed many a good bottle of his wine from the cellar. We bought the last eight bottles of his 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva to enjoy in Canada. We are looking forward to his Grand Selection that will be available next year, and more of his cheese. Do not forget the cooking class with Gaia and her mom, great homemade Tuscan food that was enjoyed by all (and enough pasta left over for dinner the next day).

Greve is a great town, we enjoyed the bustling market on Saturday, coffee at the café, and bread from the bakery. There are a few local restaurants we did not get to, but they are on the list for next year.

Thanks Kate and Francesco for all your time and effort in helping us have an incredible vacation. Cheers, and we will ration Marco's wine to enjoy over the coming months until we return next year.

If you are looking for a vacation villa in Tuscany ...this is the one.

  • 5 of 5

Where to begin…it was oh so perfect!

Our stay at Le Convertoie was beyond amazing. First and foremost, Kate and Francesco were wonderful. Francesco met us when we arrived and gave us the grand tour of the villa, which was magnificent. Kate communicated with us from initial booking until the end of our stay. She has a wealth of knowledge to share and it was wonderful to spend time with her on a tour (this was a beyond words added bonus!).

The villa – we enjoyed the villa with other friend for two wonderful weeks. Every room was perfectly appointed. The Chapel was superb. All the bedrooms were very comfortable. The kitchen had every necessary appliance. The views from every area of the house were inspiring from morning to night. The view of the sunset from the kitchen and the veranda was beautiful.

Kate made some outstanding recommendations for things to do in the area. She also recommended local Chef Gaia. Chef Gaia and her mother, Maria Victoria, came to the villa to a provide cooking lessons one night and another night they cooked for us. (We couldn’t get enough of their cooking!) They set the dinner table for us in the patio, from where we were able to enjoy the hillside views as the sun went down. We certainly enjoyed Chefs Gaia and Maria Victoria cooking. The food was delicious…we ate until we could eat no more! Oh, also, we purchased wine and olive oil from Marco who lives next door. He produces both. He and his wife, Emmy, are such great people.

My husband and I are hoping to take another trip to Greve in Chianti to spend at least another two weeks a Le Convertoie. Kate, thank you so much for your hospitality and the use of beautiful villa. This was by far one of the best vacations we have ever had.

Absolutely Amazing Stay!!!

  • 5 of 5

First I would like to say that my wife and I have been to Italy numerous times but have never done a vacation like this. If you are considering renting this place for a vacation, do not hesitate, book immediately! The house is situated in the perfect location. Being centrally located in the Chianti region it is easy to get to the other villages and towns. You feel secluded but are only about a 5 minute car ride into town. We stayed for a week and wished we could have stayed longer. There were four of us and the house offered more than enough room for us all.

We can’t say enough about Francesco and Kate. They were the best host you could ask for and went above and beyond our expectations to make our stay wonderful. Kate was very helpful in offering suggestions of things to do and helped with dinner reservations. She was very attentive to our needs before and during our vacation.

The house was clean and plenty of linens (bed sheets, towels, etc.). The kitchen was well stocked with dishes and appliances. They offer plenty of information about Italy, the region and the property. There are many hiking trails to explorer in the area. They have a vast movie, music and book collection. Everything mentioned in the other reviews and on the description of the property were spot on.

Very peaceful and enchanting to sit out on terrace and enjoy an espresso in the morning and wine and cheese in the evening. A must is to have Gaia and her mother cook for you; we had them cook for us one evening near the end of the trip and wished we would have done it earlier in our stay. They cook enough for two days! When we return we will have them cook for us again.

If you want to really have a Tuscan vacation this is where you want to stay. Please do not miss out on staying here the house’s history and the region really makes you feel like you stepped back in time. It was a very peaceful and fun vacation.

Thanks for everything! We will be returning hopefully sooner rather than later!

Beautiful beyond words!

  • 5 of 5

I cannot even begin to describe our experience at this amazing home, both with the property itself and the owner, Kate. Pictures do not do it justice. It is warm and welcoming from the minute you open the door. After a long day of travel and an unfortunate accident it was like coming home! Kate was there to greet us along with an amazing home cooked meal by Anna (do yourself a favor and take advantage of this extra treat!). The property is beautifully decorated and kept, and each room brings a new treat to enjoy. We had more than enough room for the 8 of us to spread out and relax. We loved winding down in the peacefulness of the chapel every evening! There is also plenty of room outside to roam and explore. The neighbors are as welcoming as Kate and their dogs give a sweet greeting! (Be sure to enjoy some of their wine and olive oil!).

Kate went above and beyond as a hostess in helping us deal with the police and rental car company regarding the accident. She took time, and patience, to assure that we were able to enjoy our time without having to stress about what was happening and we can't thank her enough for that. Her suggestions for places to visit and how to get there added to our trip greatly! She is a lovely soul and we are fortunate to not only have been able to enjoy her beautiful home but to know her as well!

We will return to enjoy this amazing find again!

Owner's Response: Dear Heather, Glenn and family, Thank you so very much for you more-than-generous words. Really, it was the least I could do. We're delighted to know that you enjoyed the house as much as we do, and I very much hope you'll be back again soon. The best things are the little places close-by, so now that you've done all the big sights, next time you can enjoy the hidden treasures in the Chianti hills --- and some glorious walking, so you don't even need the car! Our very warmest wishes to you all, Kate & Francesco

Absolutely Magnificent

  • 5 of 5

The villa is, indeed, stunning. It has history, it has been carefully restored, is beautifully decorated and well equipped. Our family of 5 adults stayed at here for a week and we wished we had booked it for 2 weeks - or more! It was an ideal location for day trips to Pisa, Florence, San Gimigano, Volterra, Sienna, Cortona and more. You will need a car to get around but travel is easy and with our GPS we had no problems. There are plenty of excellent wineries to visit and the entire area has some very excellent restaurants. Kate (owner) provided many wonderful suggestions for where to eat, what to do and so on. But you will want to plan to eat at the villa also - you can cook yourself or hire someone to either cook for you or do a cooking class at the villa. The scenery is everything beautiful you have ever pictured of Tuscany. It was so perfect to wake up to the scene out our bedroom window. I can't say enough about how beautifully restored the church (now living room) is. The villa is spacious and has all the amenities (well, no pool, but we were there in October and didn't care). Be sure to sample the wine made on the estate and sample the olive oil. Have Marco how you where and how he makes the wine. Truly and exceptional place. Our thanks to Kate for helping to make our visit go smoothly. Highly recommend.

Italian Idyll in an exceptional place

  • 5 of 5

Four long term friends sought an exceptional experience in the Italian countryside -- but didn't want to be too far from Florence or Siena. Le Conventoie was the perfect location, and the house itself proved to be the best mix of charm, comfort and the ability to be as private or as social as the two couples chose. Pictures only hint at the beauty and quality of the renovation, and don't do justice to the exquisite terrain that surrounds the place (great for hiking). The bed and bathrooms were immaculate and well appointed, and everything was in perfect working order. The kitchen was a welcome gathering place at the end of the day, where wine and ingredients were swapped over many laughs (on the days we didn't indulge at fabulous restaurants either in Greve or on our day trips). The ownership is so professional and so good at communication that nothing felt left to chance -- important in a country where our command of the language was pretty rudimentary (but improved after some of aforementioned vino). In short, the trip felt too short, the departure was bittersweet, but the anticipation of our next visit will sustain us over a long cold winter in New York. We cannot say enough how heartily we can recommend Le Conventoie and the charming town of Greve in Chianti.
