About the property

4 Bedrooms, 3 Bathrooms, With Waterfront Roof Terrace Views

“This newly renovated yet rustic 4 bedroom 18th Century town house is located in the picturesque village of Kalkara Creek, overlooking the Grand Harbour of Valetta in Malta.

The three story living space includes a comfortable living room with Cable TV, DVD plus internet WIFI and a breezy waterfront balcony.

The dining room leads onto a well-equipped pine wood kitchen with it’s own private enclosed courtyard and breakfast table, peppered with climbing Bougainvillea, perfect for cool shaded breakfasts and alfresco dining in the warmer months..

The 1st en-suite double bedroom is found on the ground floor with its own mediterranean style courtyard shower room. Two further bedrooms are located on the second floor, one with an elegant four poster oak bed with a waterfront enclosed balcony, which is lovely to sit with a cup of tea and watch the boats bobbing on the water; the other is a twin room with 2 single beds; both share the good sized en-suite glass enclosed shower room, please note that this bathroom is accessible only THROUGH the twin room, therefore most suited for families and those comfortable with sharing the walk through situation.

The 4th bedroom is a double room located on the 3rd and top floor with it's own en-suite full bath/shower room with a small sunny balcony to dry towels and clothes etc. The top floor also leads onto the rooftop sun terrace overlooking the stunning views of The Grand Harbour of Valetta.

The roof terrace offers a comfortable teak wood garden table with chairs with the option of a roller sun shade when needed. It's a perfect spot for early mornings with a quiet cup of tea, the relaxed alfresco lunch and ofcourse those sunset cocktails and nibbles on warm Mediterranean evenings!

Kalkara Creek itself enjoys a delightful village vibe with a village square, church and café for a morning coffee, afternoon beer/lunch and or relaxed alfresco dining. There are plenty of nearby amenity stores, to stock up on those essentials: a daily village fresh fruit and veg Grocery Cart, Bakery, Butcher, Chemist & Doctor, Video Store and Police Station.

Within relaxed strolling distance there is the historical Village of Birgu and Vitorriosa Waterfront and Marina to enjoy. Across the water is the Grand Harbour of Valetta, packed full of activities and night life and only a water taxi ride away or simply jump on a bus.

About Marc Cuthbert

Welcome! Our names are Marc and Katherine. I bought our house, Templars Rest, 3 yrs ago to live in while I finished a work project in Malta. I instantly fell in love with the beauty and charm of the Creek, and wanted to be a part of it. The very first time I saw Kalkara Creek was when I sailed into the harbor on an adventurous voyage from Hong Kong to London back in 1997 on an old traditional Chinese Sailing Junk, it was a time of rest and recharge. I love to be near or beside the sea, and Templars Rest offers just that and more, with cool sea breezes, stunning views, salty sea air and sounds associated with the sea at my doorstep.

Marc Cuthbert purchased this house in 2009

Why Marc Cuthbert chose Malta

For us this waterfront home holds such charm, we love looking out over the Creek with the bright coloured boats bobbing on the sparkling water, it's mesmerizing and simply soothes and inspires us.

A practical and also fun feature that tempted us to this property and the Creek was that we are only a hop skip and a jump away from Birgu and Vitorriosa Waterfront, which we love to stroll to and soak up the beauty, atmosphere and culture, while enjoying either a meander through the back streets, or sitting out in the old city/village square with a latte and a great breakfast, or enjoy a cold pint of Guinness on tap in the shade chatting to the friendly folk there. Plus of course, with a love of boats, there is the modern marina with stunning yachts to admire, bars and restaurants to enjoy, with the back drop of the old city for alfresco dining, so lots of cultural contrasts at our fingertips, we love that!!!

And yet we still enjoy the treat of stepping back away from it all in a relaxed village locale, looking over the harbour.

What makes this house unique

The house exudes the flavor of the local history in archetecture and design, with beautiful wooden, white painted shuttered window features throughout the house that help keep it delightfully cool inside. It was originally two boat-houses on the ground floor, where local fishing boats would have been hauled up and inside directly from the bayside. The home offers the soft gentleness of the local village vibe, balanced perfectly with easy and trouble-free access to the hustle and bustle of all that the ancient capital city has to offer.

In the mornings, on holiday, there is nothing better for me than relaxing in the cool shade with a fresh coffee, leisurely casting an eye over the harbor creek and local environment as the morning sun warms the village to life! Then in the evenings, after a days activities, chilling on the rooftop to enjoy the spectacular sunset over Valetta!. I also love long peaceful lazy breakfasts, reading a book in the totally secluded kitchen courtyard, in the cool morning shade.

Another thing we love to do is to stroll through the village to Rinella Bay beach for a late afternoon swim, relishing in that daily cool down and exercise fix, diving off the pier is a delight, often followed by a refreshing cocktail on our rooftop. The pace and locality of this routine adds to a very comfortable and homely stay for us.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Katherine's Place was my first ever experience with AirBnb and I can honestly say I don't think I'll ever stay in a hotel again! This beautiful traditional home suited our needs perfectly. We were 3 couples sharing and it was great to have 3 bathrooms. The property was very clean when we arrived and Katherine arranged transport for us from the airport. Pauline was on hand to help us although we really had not need to call her as there was nothing to fault. The location was sublime, overlooking the prettiest small fishing harbour where we were lucky enough to experience the most magnificent sunset from the rooftop where we spent a lot of time! There are a lot of stairs so probably not the right place for anyone with mobility issues. The local Pastizzeria and Supernova down the road got a work out and we particularly enjoyed taking the Luzzo over to Valletta - much more authentic than the ferry with some fun characters. Loved it loved it loved it.

Ideale uitvalsbasis

Prachtige ligging met zicht op Birgu ( gemakkelijk te bereiken door voetpaadjes door de muur) en valletta.

Zalig zicht vanop het dakterras.

Alleen een beetje jammer van de bouwwerken achteraan.

Great house in lovely village

  • 5 of 5

Such a delightful house in the heart of Kalkara. Lots of beautiful steps to climb but that is part of its charm. Kitchen was just big enough . It was a bit chilly which was seasonal but the heat was adequate. Just follow the directions and don't turn it all on at the same time. Pauline, the house manager, addressed our concerns promptly. The only complaint was the dampness in the ground floor bedroom and one needs an umbrella to utilize the adjoining bath if it is raining. The village is delightful and the merchants and neighbors were helpful and friendly. I will definitely rent this again.

This is real life Malta, with style.

  • 5 of 5

I'm not sure I can say much that hasn't been said by the previous reviewers, other than ...I *will* be back. This was my second trip to the Island. First time I stayed in Valletta in the Old City, and enjoyed it, but it was very expensive, and difficult to do things outside of Valletta. This was perfect. Kalkara is a picturesque, but working village. Quiet, but easy access to just about anywhere one would want to go. Staying for a week was a nice experience in getting into the rhythm of day to day life. Malta has a bunch of stuff to see and do, plus a heavy duty "party scene" (though blessedly NOT in Kalkara), but the secret to it is, taking in the small stuff, like getting some bread from the bakery, or pastizi from the kiosk, or just hanging out in the park. All of that is right outside of your door here.

The best terrace view of Malta

  • 4 of 5

Because we love a nice view we could not have found a better place.

We know how difficult it is to keep a traditional house in order.

Therefore, we have been very happy with the house and the purity.

Great house, Great view, Great location

  • 5 of 5

If you love Malta, you will love this place for it is Malta's quintessence. The house is typical as well as the area.

You are into Malta's life. Very few tourist there, very local, familiar life. Reaching Valetta is easy with you own car, busses or the taxi boat. After being there I am sure that I made the right choice. Much better staying there that in Valetta itself.

Also the house is clean and warmly decorated. Air conditioning was highly appreciated (fans in the other rooms).

The house is fully equipped.

The contacts I had with Katherine were warm and efficient. She runs this from abroad but all is very well and smoothly organized.

So, if you go to Malta, go to this place !

Hi Katherine!

We all want to thank you for giving us the perfect home for our holidays. Staying in your Templars' rest apartment was like dream come true! We enjoyed every single moment of our stay.

Templars Rest is located on the outskirts of the ancient and popular Three Cities, nearest to the city of Birgu; it offers a perfect setting for exploring Malta’s tapestry of rich culture and history, stunning architecture, local Museums, Forts, Chapels and Art Galleries.

Nestled in the sleepy fishing village of Kalkara Creek, it’s easy to feel relaxed enjoying the friendly local vibe; if staying close to home there is plenty to do with Rinella Beach and Pier only a stroll away for a refreshing swim, play a game of tennis, and or visit Fort Rinella with it's historic 100 ton gun built by the British in 1878; it's a wonderful live museum restored by the Malta Heritage Trust (Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna.) Simply relaxing with a cold beer/cappuccino with a good book in the village square cafe, 'SuerNova Heights' soaking up the atmosphere is a pleasant way to while away the day.

Vittoriosa Waterfront is a 15 minutes walk around Kalkara Creek, and is lovely for exploring the elegant Grand yacht Marina, the street café’s, shops, alfresco dining, wine bars and there is even a Casino with the backdrop of the super yachts moored up looking splendid.

Plus a Maritime Museum to enjoy.

Meandering through the charming back streets of Birgu, you will find the fortified ancient city is steeped in history from the Knights of St John dating back to the Siege of Malta in 1530's. You can also visit the well known Inquisitors Palace, a favourite place of interest for visitors in Malta.

Just across the water is The Grand Harbour City of Valetta. Take a traditional Maltese boat which serves as a water taxi across the harbour, directly to Valetta for around 5 Euros, enjoying the grandeur of Fort Angelo and Birgu from the sea.

Valletta is packed full of activities, sight seeing tours, restaurants, café’s, shops, and the well known St John’s Cathedral and Co-Cathedral museum.

There are also plenty of opportunities to head out further afield by hired car in search for Malta’s more secluded and hidden beaches, Or explore the cobbled streets of Mdina, one of the prettiest walled cities of the region, enjoying the medieval and Baroque architecture of Malta’s old Capital with panoramic and mesmerizing views of the Island.

Taking a days trip to the well known and bustling Marsaskala Seaside Village and Sunday Market is a great day out to buy local speciality cheeses, olives, rustic breads and of course local crafts and gifts to take home.

So much is within easy reach from Kalkara by foot, water taxi and local bus, while hiring a car is recommended for day excursions and further afield adventures of the island.

Helpful hints for getting around:

There are frequent buses that stop within 200m either side of the house, that go to and from Valletta, there is also a great taxi service available right in the village square from the local garage. We can provide details of a local family car rental service where a small simple car can be hired for around 20 Euros with A/C, or 16 Euros without A/C. Details provided on request.
