Fabulous Farmhouse On The Prairie Estate Near Daglan

Overview

Property

Updated: 20-Nov-2016
Sleeps 8 In Great Comfort.

The Farmhouse is a fabulous home that sleeps 8 people and can also accommodate babies in cots.

There are four bedrooms in total and the main double room is a wonderful room with fantastic views across to the 13th century chateau that sits atop the village in Le Peyruzel.

There is also a 2nd double bedroom, a single bedroom and a family bedroom that comprises a single bed and bunk beds.

On this first floor is also the bathroom with bath, hand-held shower, toilet and a basin and the shower room also with toilet and basin. All of these rooms have lovely views and have been beautifully decorated.

Downstairs you will find the spacious accommodation that comprises the living room, the hallway and the kitchen.

The lounge room has 2 huge soft couches which surround the lovely old brick fireplace that has a wood burner for the cooler months. Here there is the satellite TV and DVD.

The hallway is as lovely and has a separate toilet with hand basin. From the hall there is access to the two terraces.

Off from here is the huge kitchen which is fully equipped and also has a separate larder with a fridge and a washing machine and access to the terrace at the rear of the house.

The two terraces are at opposing sides of the house and the first one is the covered front porch. Here you will find wicker chairs complete with cushions and tables; it is a wonderful place from which to watch the birds or the hot air balloons come up from the valley in the early morning or the evening.

The other terrace is where you will find the table for your al fresco meals and also a separate table with 4 chairs. There is a little porch here over the kitchen door (visible in the photographs) and we have also installed a lovely steel pergola for the wisteria which covers most of the terrace.

We have tried to create the loveliest place possible for our guests, making this house comfortable, cozy and welcoming. This has been aided by the addition of a dresser in the kitchen, lovely rugs and curtains and comfortable furniture and all the bits and bobs that we consider important.

Outside there is the covered double garage.

We also provide cots, high chairs, bedding, towels, bath mats, tea towels, pool towels, videos, strollers etc... all free of charge of course.

About the Owner

We came to France back in 1986 in order to work and to stay somewhere just after our marriage in the April of that year. We quite simply never went back to England. We both spoke French as I had been educated here for 4 years whilst living in Normandy with my parents and David had spent many winters in the Alps. We lived and worked all over France before falling for La Prairie in 1996. We have spent the last 15 years accomplishing what we have now and are still at it! We love what we do, love La Prairie very much and can't wait for 2017 to start although we don't finish this year until the 20th November. The winter months will be very welcome in order to work in the houses making them lovelier, replacing what needs to be replaced, adding new and up to date essentials. We hope that you will come and stay with us very soon.

Great Stay

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed in the Farmhouse for a too brief 4 nights. We really enjoyed it and were able to meet David who was very friendly and helpful.

The farmhouse was very relaxing to just hang around, and there are a ton of things for kids to do on the property. There are also countless activities to do in the area. Louise helps by providing many very useful recommendations.

Two things just to be aware of if you're considering renting: first, the internet isn't the most reliable. Not a big deal for us, but just something to be aware of if you have to have a consistent, fast connection for work or something else. Second, there is a 75 euro cleaning fee that you are pay in cash. Also not a big deal, but it is something I'd rather be aware of prior to booking. It is also a little confusing because the listing directly states that the rental rates are all inclusive and there are no extra fees from April to October.

Again though, we really enjoyed our time and would stay again in a heart beat. Thanks David and Louise.

My Happy Place

  • 5 of 5

This is my most favourite place in the world. We've just returned from our 6th visit and are suffering serious La Prairie withdrawals. The house is beautiful with all the comforts of home. The pool is fantastic and we struggled to get our children out of it this year. Perfect location for exploring the many chateaus and villages like Domme, Monpazier, Rocque Gageac. Louise & David are so helpful, nothing is too much trouble, they've helped us with everything from booking restaurants to arranging the vets. My whole body & mind relaxes here, it's just perfect!

Wundervolles Haus für entspannte Ferien

  • 5 of 5

Awesome at every level

  • 5 of 5

Such a wonderful, beautiful and welcoming place. This part of France is paradise, I have brought my family here for many years since we discovered La Prairie and watched our children enjoy the magic on every holiday. The hosts David and Louise are fantastic, helping with every little detail whenever it is needed. To my Wife and I this is our perfect retreat as La Prairie can be like home, if you just want to relax in the house or grounds, but equally there are a million things to do if you want to be busy. Such a romantic and idyllic home from home, so much so that we booked our 2016 holiday as we were leaving last year. Can't wait for the road trip to begin in August this year...

Every dream you've ever had....

  • 5 of 5

La Prairie is every dream you've ever had about the French countryside, every dream you've had about rural living, and every dream you've had about holidays. I don't think I've been happier than I was in the farmhouse at La Prairie.

The family and I spent a perfect, dreamy, seamless month in the Farmhouse. The girls climbed trees, chased butterflies, played endlessly in the cubbies, the sandpit and the dedicated toy-house. They picked chestnuts, flowers and heritage apples. They loved watching the hot air balloons drift over the horizon. They chased squirrels and deer. My husband and I played table tennis, walked through woods, read novels, cooked coq au vin and planned our dream life.

Every day we would have an al fresco lunch as a family on the terrace and we would talk and laugh. On Wednesday and Saturday we would head early to the stunning markets in Sarlat and buy fresh local produce.

We ate well, slept well, played well.

The Dordogne region was beyond divine. We canoed, explored castles and gardens, zoos of rare animals, villages, caves, cafes. I mean, it was the dream.

Louise and David were gorgeous hosts and did whatever they could to accommodate us. I wept when I left. I want to go back. If I had the money, I would buy the place and build my life there. I mean, it's that perfect.

You must go. La Prairie really is the stuff of dreams.

Owner's Response: Cathy, is that you? Mmm, what to say when an authentic review is so wonderful? I know La Prairie is lovely but one loses sight after a while which is largely unforgiveable. It takes the Cathy's to come along and open my eyes again. We loved having you here, knowing you loved it, knowing your sabbatical was going to be amazing knowing we contributed to these factors. Thank you so much for the praise. I can't tell you how much we appreciate it!

Can't Wait to Return!

  • 5 of 5

I can hardly wait to schedule a return trip. This was the best place we stayed in four weeks of touring France, staying in six different rentals. We had eleven of us, renting the Farmhouse and Kestrel, and it was absolutely wonderful. Louise was an accommodating host, available when needed, with a carefully thought-out binder of recommendations and suggestions. She also assisted in making dinner reservations for our entire group. The houses were so cozy and welcoming, thoughtfully designed, with everything anyone would want, we were tempted to just stay in the houses, rather than touring the nearby amazing towns and historical sites. The two washing machines and dryer (plus clotheslines), available in a separate house, were a special treat. I was initially concerned about the number of bathrooms, but it wasn't a problem at all. I would give this six stars if I could.

Location

From the Owner

Why did we choose the Golden Triangle of the Dordogne? Well, because of its proximity to 1001 castles, the nearness of Daglan, La Belle Etoile in La Roque Gageac, the history, the river itself, the people, the climate, everything in short. We came across La Prairie quite by accident though. It was in 1995 when we were living about an hour away in the Lot. We came over this way because we had heard tell of its incomparable beauty. We did as we had always done and drove around the country lanes, avoiding the busy parts of the area. This led us to Le Peyruzel. Destiny? Undoubtedly. Easy? No, not at all. We loved it here although there was nothing but some ruined buildings and weeds and brambles 7ft tall. We offered a price. Accepted with joy on both parts then turned down as 'family' wanted to buy it. Fortunately for us 'family' decided against it at the very last minute and we jumped in as quick as possible and signed over the money before it could happen again. We had seen the extraordinary potential, the position of the property was unique. All was needed was hard work and we had plenty of that to give!

The problem with describing the area where we live is to know exactly where to start. It is so beautiful, so rich in activity, culture and that 'Je Ne Sais Quoi' that only the French possess that it makes the following task quite tricky! But I will endeavour to tell you just why you should come and visit us.

Daglan is stunning so let us start with our home village. We live 3 km up the hill from this quintessentially Perigordine village and it is here that we take the children to school, gossip at the market and occasionally indulge in a meal at the fantastic Petit Paris in the village square. The village was taken into hand about 7 years ago and spruced up and polished and scrubbed and neatened by the ambitious Maire who was in residence at the time. He accomplished something quite lovely and we are all proud of our village and the people in it too. The Church is very pretty especially inside, the little shop is run by a delightful couple, there are Artisan shops everywhere. It is a jewel of a village and you will see why when you come!

Our little hamlet of Le Peyruzel is gorgeous as well. No shops but a real living/working community of farmers and everyday people living here in the peaceful countryside that surrounds us. The walks we have from here are fabulous and the new bike tracks are amazing with the added luxury of having your bicycles delivered to La Prairie! The walk from La Prairie down to Daglan takes about 40 minutes.

Approximately 15 minutes from La Prairie are Domme, La Roque Gageac, Beynac, Castelnaud, the river, the castles, the gardens.....

Domme is stunning; a hilltop village that is like something out of a fairytale but then again so is La Roque with its medieval houses built into the rock. Beynac castle is awe inspiring, Monfort Castle is breathtaking. Les Jardins De Marqueyssac and Eyrignac are extraordinary. Sarlat is so stunning as to be quite overwhelming especially visited early when you have it to yourself.

Our local restaurants are delicious; Le Petit Paris in Daglan is the best place to sit outside. La Belle Etoile, our favorite, is the best place for a meal and the loveliest terrace anywhere. Le Martial which is 10 minutes away has amazing food, our local Auberge serving fabulous wholesome home produced food is a must. Le The Vert is delicious for lunch, L'Eole has fantastic take away pizzas, Castelnaud has a new take away food service which we have tried and were blown away by the quality of the food.

Then there is Rocamadour, Eagles Rock, the must see Gouffre De Padirac, the indispensable Font De Gaume...

I could go on forever but the best thing to do is to have a look at our website and it will lead you to everything you need to know........But just before I sign off and let you discover our website in peace and quiet let me talk about what there is to do for the children. We have 6 children so we know pretty much all there is to know about their dreams and hopes whilst on holiday with Mum and Dad.

For the tiny ones and young ones we have provided the sloping beach for the pool. The gate is difficult to open and there is an alarm system so you can really relax! The toy barn is what has made some parents holiday; they can spend hours in this room and you are just a few steps away from them. There are swings, log cabins, a sand pit and a goal for football. You can take them to a castle and they can become a Knight or a Damsel. How about walking around the gardens in Marqueyssac which is illuminated with thousands of candles every Thursday night in the summer? Go to Sarlat to watch the miming acts, the street artists. How about Eagles Rock to watch the birds of prey? Sounds boring? Would it convince you if I told you they walk on your head, over your legs, swoop down, narrowly missing your ears and the Griffon Vultures weigh 13kgs and have a wingspan of nearly 10 feet? How about the aquarium in Le Bugue? Not content with fish, the owners have provided Anacondas, Pythons, Caimans and fish you can stroke (all ages love this especially me) and the wonders of the fish themselves, the size of the sturgeons are breathtaking and if you are lucky there will be someone in the huge tank swimming with them. And what is there for the teenagers, the budding teenagers and the young in us all? That age can be difficult to say the least so here are some things to consider! There is the pool, swimming in the Dordogne, horse riding, paint balling, hot air ballooning, kayaking, canoeing, tree top trekking, cycling, rock climbing, pot holing, being punted down an underground river, being lowered in a basket to an underground cave, exploring the Chateau De Castelnaud and if you are really desperate to please them there is a McDonalds in Sarlat!

So go ahead and discover our website and we hope to see you very soon.

Facilities

From the Owner

Perhaps the best thing about living here at La Prairie is the peace and quiet. You could be a million miles from problems that beset the rest of the world yet we are so close to noise, ferment, news and people if we choose. I find that a rare combination. Also, there is the village of Daglan which is so beautifully maintained and so French and so welcoming. Walking the dogs is a treat not a chore as is the gardening. Spring comes very early here too. By the end of February there are many signs that the warmer weather is returning: the Black Redstarts are nesting early, the swallows appear at last, the dandelions come out and the light changes. You can rise at 5.30 in May and be greeted by deer and rabbits and maybe, if you're lucky' a shy wild boar. The air is warm already, the promise of another day of unbroken sunshine. And then there's lovely Sarlat of course, a fabulous town, so rich in culture and history that even after 30 years of living in France, I still find this town fascinating and love nothing better than having tea in one of the cafes along the side streets.

Notes:

  • The swimming pool is, as some of our friends/guests have informed us, the 'piece de resistance' of the whole Estate. Not content with a 11x5 standard liner pool, David decided to build something special, something unique. The pool is on a salt water system (no chlorine=no red eyes) and has been constructed with children in mind. We decided to build a sloping access to the pool and we call it the beach. This has been the starting point for many a cautious child to venture into the water and take their first strokes! There are also steps and it is more than deep enough for diving. Disliking liners we decided to tile the pool and the effect is totally different than that of your average swimming pool. The water is the colour of the seas in the Caribbean. The addition of the pool house in 2007 is amazing and now we have it in place we cannot imagine how we ever did without it. We built it using oak beams - the roof is totally exposed from underneath - and antique tiles for the roof itself. There are plenty of tables and chairs for your comfort and for the pool itself we have provided numerous wooden sun loungers with cushions and parasols too.
