About the property

2 Bedrooms (1 kingsize,1 twin) 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 4.

Escape to this charming, freshly refurbished, south facing cottage, part of an old hilltop Devon farm with far reaching views across rolling Devon countryside. It is far from busy roads and the stresses of every day life, yet the Atlantic coast is only 15 minutes away.

The cottage is lovely and warm and has a secluded south facing garden and free use of a private tennis court just 30 paces away! You can roam the fields the cottage stands in although you might come across the occasional sheep!

Torrington market town is only 3 miles away and has all the amenities you will need including family butchers, bakers, grocers , gift shops , tea shops , art/music centre (The Plough) and even it's own small market.

R.H.S. Rosemoor Garden is 4 miles away and has 65 magnificent acres of gardens to explore.

The Atlantic coast nearby has great surf as well as surf/kite surfing schools , miles of sandy beaches and the fabulous coastal pathway not to mention North Devon's own Hockings ice cream vans!

Inland there are the two National Parks ,Exmoor and Dartmoor both within easy reach for walks and out door adventures.

The Torridge River and estuary are well known for bird watching and fishing, there are also 9 golf courses in North Devon , the closest of which is 3 miles away (Torrington).

Find tranquillity roaming the ten acres of fields and woodland on the farm or simply relax in the private, enclosed, garden with a cup of tea and one of Torrington's famous Chelsea buns!

Fresh and bespoke, recently renovated, the cottage has character.

Sleeps 4 with 2 cosy bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (one with power shower, one with a bath/shower), an airy lounge with beams and open plan kitchen with locally sourced slate work tops and a ceramic hob and fridge. There are plenty of books , games and DVDs/CDs for relaxed evenings in too.

The mezzanine bedroom has 2 single beds and has far reaching views to the west.

The cottage is lovely and warm and has adjustable radiators in each of the rooms.

The cottage is private and peaceful and has an altogether 'away from it all' feel to it . Nearby ( but quite separate) is the traditional shepherd's hut which can also be rented (prop number 1163020/E14229) The main farm is just up the lane.

About Cathy Bremner

We wanted to bring up our two children in the countryside. We love the sea and walking on the moors and were attracted to North Devon because of its away from it all feel. We like to support our local towns, Instow and Torrington which have all the shops we need and are very friendly. We all play alot of music, Alastair -violin and flute, Jenny -cello and double bass , Cathy - piano and banjo and Jim - guitar and drums and have got to know lots of musicians locally.

Cathy Bremner purchased this cottage in 1994

Why Cathy Bremner chose North Devon

The farm had been in the same family for many generations and when we discovered it nothing much had changed. We even found the old cooking pot which used to stand above the open fire! We fell in love straight away and the farm's renovation has given us a life long project ever since!

What makes this cottage unique

We love living on top of a hill , there's lots of light and big views. We are away from the coastal tourists yet close enough to decide to go for a quick swim in the evenings after work! Whenever we feel in need of culture our local lively art centre , The Plough, gives us live music/cinema/theatre etc so we have the best of both worlds. Also there are lots of cosy pubs serving real ale where we can go after our out door adventures!

Notes:
A note about the elderly and infirm ; there are 5 steps down into the garden and one step up into the cottage, the second bedroom has a short flight of stairs up to it, but the first bedroom is on the ground floor. A note about young kids; there are two small sets of stairs (as above) and an upstairs window you might want to consider. Pets are welcome, there is even a stable but don't forget there are sheep on the farm, so dogs need supervision at all times! A beach towel is a handy extra to bring as our white towels don't fair well on the beach!

Beautiful Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a fantastic week in this lovely cosy cottage. Great facilities, lovely indoors and outdoors, owners so friendly, and the cottage is perfectly located for all the local sights in the area. We are already planning our return visit.

The only thing I'd suggest is to increase the size of the TV. I'm quite short sighted so had to sit very close to the small TV to see anything, so no cuddling up on the sofa with my OH!!

Peaceful, rural location

  • 4 of 5

Lovely peaceful location with great views across the valley. The house is clearly beautifully looked after, and there is a real sense, from all the information, the hand-drawn maps and the sheep-adorned card that the owner really cares and wants to make sure you have a pleasant stay.

Nearest beach is Westward Ho! which is about a twenty-minute drive. Not a lovely town but a great beach, lots of space and good for swimming, body-boarding and surfing.

Nearest pub is in Great Torrington, which is a short drive but a long walk.

The tennis court is a lovely addition, but would benefit from an hour's work clearing the brambles that have grown through the fence!

Lovely cottage in a perfect landcape for relaxed holidays

  • 5 of 5

Shepherd's cottage is really the perfect place to relax. There is plenty of space for the children to run around and a great view in a green setting. The cottage is furnished in style with a very convenient kitchen. The owner are very pleasant and helpful. We enjoyed our holiday.

Cozy, Quiet and The Perfect Little Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful few days away in this wonderful cottage. Owners were so friendly and inviting, and the facilities there were top notch. Sitting outside with a drink and the only thing you can hear is the farm animals opposite is a rare thing.

Got a little lost on occasion but that did mean we got to explore some of the stunning local villages and scenery. Our little classic Volvo as perfectly bimbling around the countryside and to all the local beaches. fantastic!

An idyllic retreat

  • 5 of 5

We were warmly welcomed to this idyllic retreat which has great views and quietness, but equally only a short driving distance from Torrington and elsewhere in north Devon. The cottage is wonderfully relaxing and comfortable with a well equipped kitchen. The bed is comfortable and there was plenty of hot water for showering. To be surrounded with only fields of lambs and bird song was just so delightful. A truly lovely stay and hopefully to be repeated.
