About the property

sleeps 8/9: 4 Bedrooms/Shower Rooms en suite, Kitchen/Dining Room, Sitting Room

La Torre Masseria Villa was featured in the Sunday Times' 'List of 50 Sensational Villas in the Med and Beyond'!

The approach to La Torre Masseria Villa is through a magnificent baroque archway and it sits amid a colourful and well-tended gardens featuring around 100 young lemon trees and many other fruit trees. There are 2 courtyards and a large paved terrace, each furnished with tables, chairs and with many terracotta pots and vases of every shape and size and all brimming with colourful flowers.

A large swimming pool (enclosed in its own courtyard and can be securely gated, if needed, for child safety reasons), is one of the Masseria's most beautiful assets. Air conditioning is available (on request and at an extra charge). La Torre Masseria contains the owner's eclectic collection of antiques and artwork and is sympathetically and tastefully decorated throughout. All the rooms have stunning vaulted stone ceilings and ancient limestone floors which, with the meter-thick walls, combine to help keep the house cool in summer. The kitchen, with handsome antique oak dining table, adjoins the spacious sitting room which is sited in on the ground floor of the original tower and contains original paintings and a beautiful bronze sculpture of a black panther. A grand external stone staircase leads to a large furnished terrace with 360 deg views, perfect for sunset cocktails. The spacious first floor bedroom, complete with four-poster bed, has its own study and private balcony as well as a spacious en suite shower bathroom. Two of the ground floor bedrooms (1 double + 1 double/twin) open directly onto the main courtyard and one further bedroom (twin), adjoins the sitting room and is large enough for an extra bed (on request). All the bedrooms have en suite bathrooms.and there is one further cloakroom with washbasin and WC in the laundry. The laundry is equipped with 2 washing machines and 2 drying machines, also irons and an ironing board.

Where to find us: La Torre Masseria Villais 22 kilometres south of Lecce on the Salintino peninsula of Puglia - Italy's most south-easterly region. From the upper terrace of the Masseria, on clear days, you can see the sea and ships making their way along the Adriatic, and even Albania is sometimes visible.

Set in ancient olive groves and not far from several beautiful beaches on the Adriatic coast, this romantic Masseria (fortified farmhouse,) was recently restored to a high level. The central part of the building was formerly a Norman Tower dating from the 11th Century and in centuries past it was the home of a Knight of Malta. There are lots of interesting places to explore - Lecce (22K), Otranto (13K), Gallipoli (35K), Santa Cesarea (20K), Alberobello (120K) and there are many excellent restaurants everywhere, including in the local small town of Carpignano (3K) and there is excellent shopping in Lecce, Maglie and Otranto.

Facilities include: Swimming pool (7m x 14m; 1.5m - 2.5m depth) with wide built-in steps as well as a ladder and diving board. CHILD SAFETY: the big wrought iron gates to the swimming pool courtyard can be closed if needed for safety reasons. Washing machines; Dryers; Dishwasher; Microwave, Basic Italian SKY Satellite TV with Sport, DVD; CD Player; iPod doc; internet via satellite/antenna; Built-in Barbecue, Fly Screens (all windows except one); Air Conditioning (payable locally). There are numerous bikes (the area is excellent for cycling) and also a table tennis table (ping pong balls provided) situated on the north terrace.

Getting there: The two nearest airports are Brindisi (65K) and Bari (170K). Train Station: Lecce (22K). Main airlines: Ryanair (Stansted); EasyJet and BA (Gatwick).

What's included: Full cleaning by maid-service on changeover day plus 4 hours cleaning mid week. Laundry change once a week (mid-week change available on request, paid locally). All bed linen, towels and swimming towels. 'Welcome' provisions including two bottles of wine.

Puglia is a wonderful region of Italy, famous for its wonderful fresh ingredients and the Pugliese cooking. The region seems only recently to have been registered by the tourist industry and travel writers; it remains, therefore, delightfully unspoilt and the Pugliese people are wonderfully welcoming and friendly. The centre of almost every town and village is a largely untouched architectural gem, which is especially true of Lecce, - often called 'the Florence of the south'. Seaside towns such as Otranto and Gallipoli are lively and have numerous excellent seafood restaurants. The coastline is spectacular: south of Otranto it's rocky and dramatic (and well worth making the drive down to Santa Maria di Leuka at the southern-most tip of the peninsula), while northwards, towards Lecce, there are long gently shelving beaches with pale gold sands and great safe swimming.

About Tina Crowther

I have lived in Yorkshire all my life and married a Yorkshire man, Tony, a partner in his family's Colne Valley textile business. In my forties, I started up a travel agency specialising in selling ski holidays nationally and later, having built up a substantial business, sold it and became the UK marketing and PR representative of SKI USA, an organisation representing 40 top US ski resorts. We retired to a small village north of Harrogate a little over 12 years ago.

Tina Crowther purchased this villa in 2005

Why Tina Crowther chose Lecce province

A sailing accident in 2004 brought my husband Tony and I to Puglia. Our sailing yacht had been capsized by a freak wave off the coast of Calabria and was brought to Taranto, on the west coast of Puglia, for repairs. So it was on visits to see how the repair work was going that we first encountered Puglia, and the Salento peninsula in particular. We quickly fell in love with the region and subsequently with a ruined Tower Masseria, which we found whilst exploring the Salento region. We loved it so much that, even though we didn't speak any Italian and we knew little of restoration work, we decided to buy and restore it!

The last recorded owner of the Masseria was a Knight of Malta and. as far as we know, the house hadn't been lived in, until 2007, for the previous 300 years. Much of the stone from the house walls and roof had been stolen over the centuries which meant we were purchasing, more or less, a ruin, Not speaking Italian and neither our architect nor any of our builders speaking any English, the first thing we had to do was study and try to learn the language as fast as we could. Needless to say, there were many ups and downs as we tried to communicate with our building team, but throughout we managed to keep our sense of humour and patience and, in the end, by the summer of 2007, we were rewarded with the house of our dreams and had an experience that was amongst the best of our lives.

Profoundly sadly, Tony died in September 2009, very unexpectedly, whilst swimming from our sailing yacht in the sea off the southern Greek coast. I have kept the Masseria for this last 6 years largely because it is a place where I and my three children with their husbands, and wives and my 11 grandchildren, can spend time together and enjoy the beauty, the wonderful restoring peace and tranquility and fun of being at La Torre.

What makes this villa unique

The opportunity of staying in an amazing historic building dating back over 1000 years - but with all the comforts and facilities needed for a 21st century luxury holiday. The coast and beaches are only 15 minutes by car, the area has many excellent restaurants and shops.

A beautiful tranquil holiday

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful relaxing week we had at Torre Pinta! The masseria is beautiful with everything (& more) that you could possibly wish for. The house has been beautifully restored with great attention to detail and the facilities available were perfect. A beautiful pool for when it was hot and table tennis for the balmy evenings! The masseria is set in a large olive grove that affords lovely walks and bikes are provided enabling you to discover all the lovely little lanes around. Take a trip to Torre dell’Orso for the beautiful beach and the fantastic ice creams at Dentoni’s! Will definitely be back!

Stay at Torre Pinta

  • 5 of 5

We had a great week's holiday at Torre Pinta where the actual experience was even better than expectations! The house has been painstakingly restored/ enhanced by the owners who have paid a lot of attention to detail with marvellous plants and pots and lovely internal furnishings. The main bedroom with its vaulted ceiling is particularly lovely but the others are also nice. Given the heat in August we really appreciated the wonderful pool which always seemed to remain refreshing, partly due to its size which is much larger than most pools. The house also has lots of different places to sit which means you can usually find some shade and move around to different places for each meal, while there is a lovely terrace on the first floor which is an excellent spot to enjoy drinks in the evening. A built in stone barbecue makes eating in perfectly feasible but there are good local pizzerias/restaurants when one fancies a change. A perfect house for 8 people and a real haven from the beaches which are very crowded at this time of year.

Magnificent, sumptuously appointed Masseria

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived through the ancient portico we were delighted and amazed at this splendid, historic property. It is rare to find somewhere as spacious, comfortable and beautifully appointed. There are so many places to sit and relax; balconies, terraces, poolside and garden. Eight people can easily lose themselves in their own little oasis of calm and beauty. Every room is a joy, and each en suite bedroom is beautifully furnished - even the beds are comfortable - not always the case even in expensive rental properties! The kitchen with its vaulted ceiling is cool and very well equipped. Enjoying meals outside is always a thrill for us sun-starved Brits and there are no less than three fully kitted out areas to eat; it may be breakfast in the courtyard, lunch under the gazebo at the poolside and dinner on the palm terrace. We were spoiled for choice. The pool is much larger than we have found in the past and the enclose pool courtyard is particularly beautiful and tranquil. There is lush planting and plenty of chairs, tables, parasols and loungers, making it difficult to motivate oneself to do more than read a book and swim all day! If so motivated, however, there are bicycles in the garage and table tennis available. Early evening strolls through the olives groves were particularly delightful, followed by sun-downers on the panoramic, elevated terrace. This was our second visit here and we plan to return again to sample more of the unique, magical atmosphere of this delightful place.

The Perfect Retreat

  • 5 of 5

If you want to get away to peace and tranquillity, yet only be an hour from the nearest airport and a few kilometres from shops, the coast and many other attractions this is the ideal place.

Lovingly restored, with such attention to detail, and meticulously cared for. Uniquely furnished with every comfort. Very well equipped kitchen makes eating in easy but it's possible to have local delicious dishes provided and many excellent restaurants are listed in the handbook.

Wander through the olive groves, cycle along the quiet lanes or drive to explore the totally unspoilt villages and towns steeped in history. Enjoy the hustle and bustle of the nearby coast then return to take a dip in the generous sized pool. Chose where to relax and admire the gorgeous plants which are strategically placed everywhere.

This villa/masseria exceeds expectation and I would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone.

Gorgeous villa - will be going back!

  • 5 of 5

Torre Pinta is a really special place and perfect for a relaxing break. I have been three times already with various friends and never tire of it. Surrounded by olive groves, it feels secluded, yet is near enough to the village and the coast to keep you busy. Though in truth, I rarely want to leave such a gorgeous place!

The villa itself is furnished beautifully and is extremely comfortable. I particularly enjoy the many terraces, so I can seek sun, shade or privacy. The pool is simply stunning, surrounded by trees, scented plants and bougainvillea. Much love has gone into this masseria and it shows. I can't recommend it highly enough.
