COMPLIMENTARY PICK UP FROM LISBON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT.

Alfama is the oldest and most traditional of Lisbon’s neighbourhoods. Its existence can be traced back to the period of Moorish domination from the 8th century onwards. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-hamma, meaning fountains or baths and referring to the numerous water sources that used to exist and feed various fountains.

Spreading along the south east slope that descends from the mediaeval São Jorge Castle, meeting with the River Tejo and just 10 minutes walking from the apartment, we are able to find some of the most important touristy sites and monuments that Lisbon has to offer. These include Sé Patriarcal de Lisboa, Lisbon’s Cathedral and oldest church dating back to 1147 and also seat of The Archdiocese, The Monastery of São Vicente de Fora which, is a 17th century, mannerist styled masterpiece, The National Pantheon, where some of Portugal’s most important historical characters are buried or The National Museum of Fado. Other notable places of interest are The Casa dos Bicos, famous for its Gothic Architecture from the 16th century and Nobel Prize winner José de Sousa Saramago’s Foundation Headquarters, Terreiro do Paço, the royal residence from the 16th century until the 18th or the flea market known as Feira da Ladra or 'Thieves' Market'.

Alfama is also one of the old neighbourhoods where Fado runs through the blood of its people. As the purest expression of the soul and the feelings of the Portuguese, Fado can and should be enjoyed in the many restaurants and bars everywhere or simply heard through an open window in a private house.

There are several ways to discover the secrets of Alfama. Walking calmly through its picturesque labyrinth of narrow streets and small squares or taking a ride on the famous number 28 tram are two of the most enjoyable. And the breathtaking views from Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol overlooking Lisbon and The Tejo River should not be missed.

Today, Alfama is a vibrant neighbourhood with its recovered architectural heritage that combines history with a cosmopolitan feel, offering a variety of restaurants, bars and craft shops that will delight those who visit us.

Welcome to Alfama.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Really good service from Paolo, including airport pick-up late evening. The location is in the very heart of Alfama,- cant be better! Note, that there is no car traffic in the lane, but some chat from vendors and by-passing tourists. The flat is small but charming and perfect for two adults!

We will definitely be back some time!

Nice apartment in Alfama

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent two weeks in this apartment in Alfama. It was conveniently located in a very busy and atmospheric section of Lisbon. For those interested in immersing themselves into the history and living culture of Lisbon I would highly recommend this rental. The apartment is perfect for 1 person or a couple. The kitchen is adequate to cook in (we ate dinner out once) and the washing machine is a real plus for people staying more than a few days.

It was very easy to get to the metro (Appolonia), the market and the historic sites. This is easy walking distance to Biaxa and Chiado, which are the two areas of the city to the West. If you stay here you will very much be in the middle of things.

The best place to stay in Alfama in Lisbonne

  • 5 of 5

We just loved our 10 days stay in this nice appartement in the historical center in Alfama, Lisbonne.

The location is perfect to visit and near all facilities.

The apartment is very clean , confortable and well equip. Even it is in historical center, the appartement is quiet to sleep.

.

The owner is a very generous and always disposes to answer our demand and he does it right away.

He took the time on our arrival to show us the area and point out the different services (bus, train, grocery , tourist interests) and he helped us with the luggages .

He gave us generously all informations for our 2 days visit in Porto by train.

He even print out our registration paper for our air flight departure and took us to the airport.

We would recommend this property without hesitation to our family or friends for a stay in Lisbonne.

This place and his owner is exceptional !

Great little apartment ideally placed for exploring Lisbon

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Lisbon for just three days and the apartment was just ideally placed. It is in the old Alfama district which is very atmospheric with winding streets and little resturants and bars tucked into corners. There is a bakery just 2 minutes away and a small store opposite which provides some basics. Paulo was very helpful and easy to communicate with prior to our stay and we were picked up from Lisbon airport by his son on our arrival which was a great help and he was full of really useful information about what to see in Lisbon.

The apartment has absolutely everything you would need (including a great shower!) and feels very secure - but its worth noting that the street outside could get noisy on Friday and Saturday evenings. Lisbon is a wonderful place with so much character and I can highly recommend this apartment and the surroundings of Alfama.

A perfect stay in the heart of Alfama

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Paulo’s apartment. The unit is perfectly located in the heart of Alfama - a short walk to Santa Apolonia train/metro station, to cathedral and Baixa, and uphill to the Castelo. The apartment is bright, comfortable and offers all the needed amenities for a wonderful stay. Paulo is a gracious and responsive host and provided some great “off the tourist map” tips for our visit to Lisboa. Obrigado Paulo e até a próxima!

Owner's Response: I have to say that it was a delightful challenge to receive you two. You already knew a lot about Lisboa, about other neighborhoods, about our language, ... and it was absolutly great all the chats and the moments we spent together. It was a true pleasure in welcome you in our Alfama apartment during this sunny February and i'm looking forward to receive you again in a near future. For the moment, enjoy your stay in Porto and don't miss any of the Port wine visits (and tastings...)

Paulo es una persona maravillosa!! Gran apartamento en una zona magnifica.

  • 5 of 5

Pronto.

Great way to discover Lisbon

  • 5 of 5

Charming apartment in the center of historic Lisbon. Very comfortable and well equipped with everything needed. Paulo the host was charming and gracious. He welcomed us and gave us directions and tips for our stay. The apartment is in walking distance to the main interest points within the city center. Transportation is within walking distance. There are no shortage of picture perfect very good little restaurants all around. The pickup (and drop off!) at the airport was much appreciated. We will come back.
