Private Pool and Modern Villa with Traditional Charm (Children age 8+)

Updated: 20-Oct-2016
The ideal home from home to explore this beautiful island. 2 bedrooms + bedsit

Casa Margarida is conveniently located - set back from the village road to Arco da Calheta, above two short flights of steps, with gardens and a superb sea view. The stone-clad house ensures a comfortable temperature throughout the year. The pool is in a sunny position beside the house with shower accessible from the poolside. The pool has solar heating enabling it to reach a up to 30 degrees C in the Summer. Temperatures remain high throughout the Autumn and are usually between 19 and 22 degrees in the Winter. The 40' flat-screen HD TV, receives over 100 channels including news, films, football, music and documentaries in English, and other European languages. The traditional Portuguese tiled kitchen and breakfast bar is separate from the sitting-room.

The main bedroom upstairs has a radio/CD player and a balcony overlooking the sea and the village. The en-suite shower room has a large walk-in power shower, and the bedroom dressing area has two additional washbasins. The second bedroom upstairs has twin beds which can be made up as a double, en-suite with bath/shower, and the balcony with sea view. On the ground floor, the bed sitting room has a single bed and a bed settee and en-suite shower room.

There is free broadband WiFi throughout the property. There is off-road private parking.

We are sorry that we are not able to accept bookings for children under the age of 10 years due to safety issues relating to the swimming pool and stairways..

Lovely, well sized villa with all you could need

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely villa in a lovely area with great views across to the sea.

The villa has everything you could ever need, with lots of space both indoors and out doors.

It was a little too cold to make use of the pool during our stay, but my daughter did venture in one day, for all of about 5 minutes.

We were met by Jane, who was really lovely and helpful and couldn't have made us more welcome. We were in touch with Peter, who was equally as helpful, and nothing was too much trouble.

We really appreciate having had the opportunity to stay at the villa and enjoy this magical island and would recommend both the villa and the island to anyone considering visiting.

Arco da Calheta is a quiet and peaceful place. There is a cafe/bar close by in the village along with a store where they have fresh bread. Over in Loreto you can find a Pizza Restaurant, where the staff speak English and are really pleasant. Well worth a visit for a meal out and very reasonably priced. Venture down the road to Calheta to enjoy a drink or a meal by the Marina.

Thanks to Philip and Kate for allowing us to rent your property.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review. After sunbathing next to the pool, sipping Madeira wine in the warm winter sunshine, a quick swim is very refreshing. From summer to late autumn, the pool is warm and inviting.

A perfect base in Madeira

  • 5 of 5

My family and I have just returned from a weeks break in this lovely house.

The weather was far from perfect with frequent torrential rain but then it is October! Inspite of this we did some great walks along the Levadas, the kids especially enjoyed walking through the tunnels in the dark with torches thoughtfully provided in the villa. The lava caves were interesting and we all enjoyed the beautiful tropical gardens at Monte with their wonderful fish ponds. When the sun came out we all swam in the pool and found the villa to be a perfect home to return to at the end of the day.

A lovely house in a good location

  • 3 of 5

The house is a good size conveniently located for the motorway giving easy access for travel around the island. Peter met us with the keys on arrival, showed us around the house and gave us some useful tips. There is a Pingo Doce supermarket within a few minutes drive and there are some nice cafes and restaurants in the local vicinity. We did find the pool a little cool at 24 degrees and there was only one cushion for four sun loungers. Even though there was only two of us and we did not cook meals we felt the house would benefit from more cutlery and crockery and a few more towels. However we enjoyed our stay very much. This is in a residential area and we found the local people very friendly. We would consider returning.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your very helpful review. Unfortunately the weather this year has been much cooler than usual. In a normal year the pool temperature is up to 29 degrees in July. We will add more of the items that you suggest and look forward to seeing you again.

Good base for exploring.

  • 4 of 5

We had not visited Madeira before and were disappointed with the weather as it was unsettled and cloudy. The property is situated in a quiet road half way up a hill and you access the property by climbing 38 steps, its location means that a car is essential. Calheta is the closest area and 5 mins drive away at the bottom of a very steep hill. There is a good supermarket and several very good restaurants and the location is a good base for exploring the island. The villa is spacious with good facilities although a bit dated, the single bedroom downstairs was cluttered with stored items and there was several items left from the previous stay, overall the property could do with a bit of tlc. The pool looked nice and clean although not used due to the weather and this and the garden was tended by the neighbour regularly. Overall I would recommend this property as a good base if you are visiting Madeira.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your helpful and complementary review. We are sorry that the weather was overcast during your week, which is unusual for the time of the year. When the house is booked for just two people, we may leave items which guests may find useful, such as a vacuum cleaner, in the downstairs spare room, leaving the other two bedrooms clear.

Lovely, peaceful location.

  • 5 of 5

Found the property easily thanks to the very informative instructions. The house was reached eventually up about 30 steps (my husband counted them) but when up there well worth every step!! Views were fabulous, lovely and quiet except for the birds singing in the trees, cockerels cock-a- doodling and the frogs in the pond over the road. House clean and tidy with everything you need to help the holiday run smoothly. Ideal location for the local bars, 2 minute walk down the road, a few more minutes up the road. Easy access to supermarket and restaurants. Wonderful time had by all, thank you!!!!!!

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Funchal International Airport at 40 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : In Arco village at 200 Metres Nearest Ferry : Funchal at 25 Kilometres Nearest Golf : Palheiro Golf at 30 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Village Cafés, restaurants in Arco & Calheta Beach at 1 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Calheta Beach at 4 Kilometres Car: recommended

Arco-da-Calheta is less than an hour from the picturesque small city of Funchal and the airport, which is to the east of Funchal. The house is 280 metres above sea-level and enjoys a warm climate with sea and countryside views across the banana plantations. There is a range of small shops, bars and cafés in the village, and a gym, taxi rank, cash machine, post office, health centre and pharmacy. There is also a small hotel with a restaurant on the edge of the village.

Calheta beach, 5 minutes drive away, has a well-stocked supermarket, a bank, a selection of restaurants, including a hotel with restaurant and bars and entertainment. The bay is partly enclosed, with a sandy beach on each side, and is good for snorkelling and sea swimming.

In the Marina whale and dolphin-watching boat-trips and sea-fishing boat trips are available.

Calheta has a sugar-cane factory with a bar where sugar-cane products may be sampled. High above Calheta beach is the Casa das Mudas with a range of art and other exhibitions.

Driving up above Arco, you will reach Paul da Serra, a high plateau surrounded by mountains. Here you will find the ancient laurisilva forest with levada walks and waterfalls. Unless you are experienced it is strongly recommended to book a guided levada walk as the levadas vary greatly in degree of difficulty. Other non-levada walks, have stunning views and ever-changing cloud patterns in the many valleys.

The North coast is very pretty with several small towns and villages and a rose garden in Arco São Jorge. Palheiro golf course is east of Funchal, and there is a new golf course due to open to the west of Arco da Calheta, in Ponta do Pargo.

Car hire is strongly recommended.
