Casa Margarida is conveniently located - set back from the village road to Arco da Calheta, above two short flights of steps, with gardens and a superb sea view. The stone-clad house ensures a comfortable temperature throughout the year. degrees in the Winter. The pool is in a sunny position beside the house with shower accessible from the poolside. The pool has partial solar heating enabling it to reach a up to 28 degrees C in the Summer. Temperatures remain high throughout the Autumn and are usually between 19 and 22 The 40' flat-screen HD TV, receives over 100 channels including news, films, football, music and documentaries in English, and other European languages. The traditional Portuguese tiled kitchen and breakfast bar is separate from the sitting-room.

The main bedroom upstairs a balcony overlooking the sea and the village. The en-suite shower room has a large walk-in power shower, and the bedroom dressing area has two additional washbasins. The second bedroom upstairs has twin beds which can be made up as a double, en-suite with bath/shower, and the balcony with sea view. On the ground floor, the bed sitting room has a single bed and a bed settee and en-suite shower room.

There is free broadband WiFi throughout the property. There is off-road private parking.

We are sorry that we are not able to accept bookings for children under the age of 8 years due to safety issues relating to the swimming pool and stairways..

Notes:
There is a George Foreman electric grill (barbecue). The underfloor electric central heating is in the sitting room, downstairs bed sitting room and en-suites, and is generally only needed during a few winter evenings. The steps to the house are unsuitable for infirm guests. The coffee maker is a filter coffee machine.

Could All Have Been Better

We liked:

The welcome and help given by Teva on arrival and subsequently, she is a star;

The welcome pack in the fridge;

The overall space;

The location and general area which was up to our expectations;

The pool even though it appears to be unheated despite the description in the advert but fortunately we had exceptionally warm weather;

Local restaurants found with the help of trip-advisor, would have been good to have had some info though in the villa, see below.

We did not like:

The lack of a guest handbook containing useful information on house equipment or local amenities, information was absent or scattered and even Teva did not know how washing machine worked;

The general clutter in and outside the villa including broken chairs, window mosquito screens, loose bidet; out of date information brochures, mildewed cork shower mat and discarded objects in drawers for example.Teva did a good job on general cleaning but it must be difficult for her given the general state of the property. Certain areas have a musty damp smell and we had to deal with some unwelcome visits from cockroaches which we reported to Teva;

The fact that the villa and particularly the pool is completely overlooked by the property above, this should be mentioned in advert;

The lack of view from kitchen/lounge due to overgrown shrubs/plants;

The unscheduled early morning visits by neighbour watering plants;

The mangy dog in the neighbours garden below, not the villa owners fault but does not give good impression or help with hygiene! Is there an RSPCA in Madeira?

We had the distinct impression that the villa was “tired”, needed some tlc and a revamp to bring it up to what it could be;

The villa was absolutely brilliant with everything we needed, the little touches made the difference(milk, bread, butter and wine) on arrival, the toys for the pool and the maps to navigate the island. Teva was excellent showed us everything and gave us some tips, the people are the friendliest we have met and the owners were really friendly ( Thank you Philip and Kate). We will definitely go back to Madeira and this villa if it is available, this was one of the best and most relaxing places we have visited.

Paradise Found!

Just returned from a fabulous week at this gorgeous villa in a beautiful location. We were met at the villa by Teva who made us feel immediately very welcome and gave us lots of tips and advice on the island and area, despite it being quite a late arrival nothing was too much trouble. The welcome snacks and bottle of wine were very appreciated!

The villa is just gorgeous and photos are very accurate. We arrived in the dark, so when we opened the shutters in the morning, the views of the ocean just took our breath away, it was so beautiful and we spent many happy evenings and breakasts on the upper balcony. The villa is very private. The weather was great, no searing heat ala Spain, just warm sunshine, fresh breezes and no mosquitos - bliss! The pool and patio were very clean with comfy sunbeds, beach towels, inflatables, outdoor grill and reclining chairs provided. The living area was cool, bright and comfy and the kitchen was very authentic and well equipped with a lovely ocean view and the gardens had beautiful plants and flowers everywhere. Didnt need aircon as fans fine.

Everywhere was really clean and modern, comfy bed, lovely dressing area & bathroom with wet room and power shower. Calheta is a nice beach resort which would be good for families (although we are a couple). There are plenty of cheap and good snack bars in the day, but only 2 restaurants open at night which close at 11, so no late nights out! However, we found Ponta do Sol a short drive away which was gorgeous and easily taxi-able if you do want a night out and not as far as Funchal. We also ate at the restaurant in Madalena do sol on the front (only one) which does amazing espatadas (those steak skewers) and the seafood looked amazing.

Madeira is an amazing place - we just loved it and cant wait to go back (hopefully to this villa!). Loved Calheta, the views of the ocean, the waterfalls, the walks, the mountains, the plants, Funchal, the toboggan ride, the cable car, cabo girao (if you don't have vertigo), the lighthouse, porto moniz and the lava pools, the wild area near Canical, the friendly locals. We hired a car but you have to be a very confident driver to go off the main roads in Madeira (villa is on main roads so no problem, but the mountain roads are full of hairpin bends, gulleys, mists and cows! and are a bit wild!) Hence Madeira has a lot of taxis! Get a glass of wine or two at night and watch shooting stars over the ocean - absolute heaven.

Fantastic House and enjoyed the experience of having wonderful views.

Everything was lovely from a fantastic welcome, wonderful views even at night sitting on the balcony looking out to sea to sitting out in the early evening in the dying sun.

The stairs were very managable as long as you are a fit person, even at a grand age of 86 years managed it daily!!!

Sorry our week came to an end to quickly.

Thanks again to Philip and the wonderful memories that we shall cherrish.

Lovely Villa

Lovely villa. Very comfortable, great pool, great views, quiet area. Greeting was lovely with basic food/drink items provided much appreciated. Limited eating places without using car, although those within easy reach were very good.

Superb Villa in a quiet location

The property was very homely, modern & clean. It is within 3 minutes walk of the local village with amenities, & within a 3 minute drive down the hill to the sea.

The villa was all it was advertised to be & very comfortable. It is South facing overlooking the sea, so the sun is around most of the day from about 10am

Arco-da-Calheta is less than an hour from the picturesque small city of Funchal and the airport, which is to the east of Funchal. The house is 280 metres above sea-level and enjoys a warm climate with sea and countryside views across the banana plantations. There is a range of small shops, bars and cafés in the village, and a gym, taxi rank, cash machine, post office, health centre and pharmacy. There is also a small hotel with a restaurant on the edge of the village.

Calheta beach, 5 minutes drive away, has a well-stocked supermarket, a bank, a selection of restaurants, including a hotel with restaurant and bars and entertainment. The bay is partly enclosed, with a sandy beach on each side, and is good for snorkeling and sea swimming.

In the Marina whale and dolphin-watching boat-trips and sea-fishing boat trips are available.

Calheta has a sugar-cane factory with a bar where sugar-cane products may be sampled. High above Calheta beach is the Casa das Mudas with a range of art and other exhibitions.

Driving up above Arco, you will reach Paul da Serra, a high plateau surrounded by mountains. Here you will find the ancient laurisilva forest with levada walks and waterfalls. Unless you are experienced it is strongly recommended to book a guided levada walk as the levadas vary greatly in degree of difficulty. Other non-levada walks, have stunning views and ever-changing cloud patterns in the many valleys.

The North coast is very pretty with several small towns and villages and a rose garden in Arco São Jorge. Palheiro golf course is east of Funchal, and there is a new golf course due to open to the west of Arco da Calheta, in Ponta do Pargo.

Car hire is strongly recommended.
