Wolborough House perches above the Torbay shore; a luxury Edwardian mansion commanding unparalleled views of Brixham Harbour and the sea beyond. This family-friendly retreat can comfortably accommodate a party of up to 16, making it an ideal venue for celebrations.

History

Wolborough House was built by wealthy local Charles Hellier in 1910. Original features include decorative plaster work, high ceilings, solid oak panelling and large period windows. The mansion strikes an enviable balance between contemporary living and period charm.

Grounds

The property is reached by a private road, where beyond the stone gateway lie pristine landscaped grounds. Sea-view lawns, verandahs and mature trees frame Brixham Harbour below.

Lower ground floor

The purpose-built ‘fun floor’ boasts its own bar, table tennis, a playroom for children complete with a chalkboard wall, a well-equipped gym and an indoor heated swimming pool.

The sunny and spacious eighth bedroom is situated on this floor, with a large double ended shower & toilet next door together with a large sauna.

The lower ground floor apartment is the private dwelling of the helpful House Keepers who have full knowledge of the house and its features, should you need

help during your self-catering stay.

Ground floor

The splendid entrance hall boasts hunting lodge decor, showcasing a stag’s head among other antiques. The chandelier-lit oak staircase frames an iridescent stained-glass window.

Bright and generously-proportioned rooms destine Wolborough to entertain. The principal drawing room boasts plush seating and a plasma television with Freeview and a DVD player, whilst Wi-Fi access is also available. The room has 180° sea views over Brixham Breakwater.

The grand oak-panelled dining room holds a 16-place table complete with soft leather chairs, whilst an original stone hearth beckons roaring fires.

A fully-fitted country kitchen characterises luxury self-catering, with a full range electric cooker and breakfast table. There’s even a separate preparation area should you wish to indulge in hired help. The room’s sunny aspect graces the Devon coast and is complemented by an al-fresco dining area complete with a brick BBQ, roof shelter and lustrous grounds.

Just off the entrance hall, a full size snooker room with sea views solves rainy afternoons.

The ground floor also boasts a cloakroom toilet.

First floor

The bright gallery landing houses two corridors of sumptuous sleeping accommodation in the form of 6 double bedrooms and 2 twin bedrooms, 1 luxury en-suite shower/bathroom and 2 principal luxury family bathrooms each fitted with an Edwardian style bathtub and one with a shower and bathtub.

All rooms are comfortably furnished, all with wardrobes and a hair dryer in each plus 5 bedrooms have sea views, one with garden terrace views and just the lower ground with no views.

The generously proportioned master bedroom features high ceilings mounted with a chandelier and decorative plasterwork, along with panelled walls and a fireplace. The room is flourished by a French-style wooden bed, walk in wardrobe and lavish en-suite. All bedrooms but the fourth twin feature fireplaces, from ornate marble mantles to rustic cast iron hearths. The third bedroom boasts a pretty garden-facing balcony.

Please note that 3 of the bedrooms do not have wardrobes.

Location:

From its picturesque setting, guests are within easy reach of the pretty chalky beach below known as Breakwater Beach and also the charming shops, tearooms and impressive fish market which front the pretty seaside harbour town of Brixham. Berry Head to Sharkham Point, a National Nature Reserve, is a haven for wildlife. Berry Head is also the site for the remains of an Iron Age hill fort. The former artillery house now houses a public display.

Review by Brian from Somerset: "Beautiful house that is well maintained and very comfortable. Excellent facilities. Outstanding views. The welcome pack of milk, bread, cheese etc. was a lovely touch. Very helpful caretakers who were not intrusive. All in all a fabulous place for a weeks stay."

A terrific holiday! Definitely recommend it.

  • 5 of 5

The house was AMAZING! We were all really impressed and so enjoyed hanging out in the house. After a day trip to one of the many places to visit, we arrived 'home' and the kids swam and swam, whilst the adults cooked and played snooker. Who could ask for more? Angie the housekeeper was so friendly and helpful. A really wonderful holiday – thank you!

Car: recommended

From its picturesque setting, guests are within easy reach of the pretty chalky beach below known as Breakwater Beach and also the charming shops, tearooms and impressive fish market which front the pretty seaside harbour town of Brixham. Berry Head to Sharkham Point, a National Nature Reserve, is a haven for wildlife. Berry Head is also the site for the remains of an Iron Age hill fort. The former artillery house now houses a public display.

The vibrant seaside town of Torquay with its wide selection of restaurants, bars, shopping arcades and lively nightlife is just over a 25 minutes’ drive away and picturesque Paignton with its family-friendly Zoo and fine golf courses is just under a 15 minutes’ drive away.

For those wanting to enjoy a full breadth of outdoor activities, the Dartmoor National Park and 41 National Trust homes & gardens to visit, are all within easy reach by car.

Visitors to Devon arrive through a combination of road, rail, sea and air. Brixham is highly accessible by car being close to the M5 & A380.

The Paignton, Torquay & Newton Abbot mainline train stations are very close by and the close proximity of Exeter airport makes it more or less effortless to arrive and be sure of a fabulous and ever memorable Devon stay!

The English Riviera!

Confused? Are you visiting Torquay, Paignton or Brixham, Torbay or the English Riviera?

The individual towns are clear. Brixham, furthest South, a fishing port, Paignton at the centre of the three and known for its great beaches and Torquay, the largest and best known protected by Thatcher, the Orestone and Shag Rock from the East and Lyme Bay.

Torbay is recognised as natural harbour and was made a unitary authority on 1 April 1998. The local tourism authorities call it the 'English Riviera' and align it with its French counterparts, on account of its beaches and mild climate.

Why and what is the English Riviera? Its location is actually Torbay, which is the combination of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. 2 miles of coastline, a UNESCO-recognised Global Geopark and replete with coves, beaches, walks, spectacular views and many things for locals and visitors to do. With rapid regeneration, restaurants, shopping, trips, great local towns such as Dartmouth then the English Riviera is a great place to be!

The first three. Its Mediterranean feel and attractions added to the position recognising the marine aviary, Kents Cavern and Agatha Christie. The other top rated attractions were Bygones, Babbacombe Theatre and the pleasure Cruises.

So whether its Torquay, Paignton or Brixham its all the Engish Riviera. Move in a little and its a great base to visit Dartmoor, the South Hams and the great small villages and towns that abound in Devon.
