About the property

3 en-suite bedrooms, spacious patio and terrace, garden and woodland

The Rustico dell’Eremo is a stone-built, fully-renovated and elegantly-furnished Tuscan mountain home, at 2,800 feet above sea-level, completely immersed in nature. It has 3 twin / double rooms, all with en-suite facilities, a spacious living-room with fireplace, and a kitchen. The house is surrounded on 3 sides by a large terrace, patio (with sun-loungers) and lawn, all with breathtaking views. It stands in its own grounds outside the tiny hamlet of Capraia and 1 1/2 miles from the picturesque medieval village of Sillico (with café, restaurant and shop). Ideal for walkers and artists (easel provided) as well as botanists, mushroom pickers, writers ...or anyone needing to get away from it all and relax in beautiful, peaceful surroundings.

The Garfagnana is a paradise for those who love walking in unspoilt nature, in landscapes which are unique in their beauty and variety. It offers a vast choice of walking routes, many waymarked, in both the Apennines and the Apuan Alps, from gentle strolling to serious high-level hiking and via-ferratas. Attractions include the Orrido di Botri natural gorge, the Grotta del Vento limestone caves, the flooded village of Vagli, the pilgrims' routes of the Via Vandeli and the Via Bibulca, Michelangelo's marble quarries and the national parks of Orecchiella and the Apuan Alps. It is a convenient starting point for exploring Lucca, Barga and Pisa, as well as medieval villages and hamlets such as Sillico and Castiglione. In summer the area is full of local festivals. Florence and Siena are about 2 1/2 hours away by train or car.

A house in the mountains

  • 5 of 5

We arrived a little early; Meryl had been gardening. My first words to her, after how do you do, were 'The photographs don't do this place justice'--and they don't. If you know Italy and the light in the mountains in the early morning, in the brightness of the day, and in the glorious evening, you know how exquisite it is to sit and watch the play of light and cloud across the landscape, and to see the lights of the village across the valley coming on. And behind you, as you sit on the terrace, is a charming, comfortable and thoroughly welcoming house. Yes, the approach roads are rather exciting, and those who live in the mountains tend to drive as if no-one else ever uses the road (but they do, of course) but you get used to it and come to see it all as part of a holiday the memories of which will last and last as a time of special beauty. So: house great--charming, well-kept, well-organised: host kind and helpful, all together, who ever really wants to go home?

Fabulous mountain retreat

  • 5 of 5

Thoroughly enjoyed our week at this villa. The peace, tranquility and unspoilt views are amazing. The accommodation is first class and made beautiful by the personal touches and homely feel not often found in rented villas. Meryl could not have been more helpful and had very kindly provided us with suggested hikes within the area. We really hope we get the opportunity to stay here again in the future and would highly recommend it to anyone wishing to escape and relax.

If you like both nature and comfort.

  • 5 of 5

Although through the years we have been spoilt by many beautiful houses, this one left us speechless when we arrived: the view is absolutely stunning. Furthermore you have 100% privacy (no neighbours, no noise, no traffic), and the house itself offers all the comfort and charm of a luxurious home that looks (and in fact mostly is) brand new. Add a warm welcome from Meryl, the owner of the house, and we think this is the ideal holiday home in the Garfagnana valley. The description, pictures and previous reviews on the site speak for themselves, and match our experience.

What we particularly liked was the fact that you could do walks straight from your house. For instance you can hike through the woods to Sillico (to get a coffee in the morning) or stroll in 5 minutes to a rocky viewpoint overlooking the whole valley.

The terrace is very spacious and wraps all around the house, so you always have a place to sit in the sun or in the shade. The absence of street noise and only the sound of the birds made it a place to truly wind down and relax. We saw a deer, a porcupine, fire flies, lots of lizards, birds of prey and even sometimes a human being.

By car it is a 20 min. drive to Pieve Fosciana to do your shopping (or eat at Il Pozzo!). The mountain road to the house is sometimes narrow and winding, but not dangerous and in good condition. Very worthwhile to visit is Lucca, San Pellegrino, a National Park, or a drive straight through the mountains to Massa.

Meryl, thank you for the great stay at your house, and we hope to return soon.

Essence of Toscana

  • 5 of 5

1) Very friendly, attentive and intelligent landlord.

2) The house is located in best place of the valley.

3) It is the best place to drink morning coffee. View from the house is beautiful. Possibilities to enjoy this view are perfect from early morning to night during any weather conditions.

4) Absolutely silent and peaceful place. Only few cars in whole day.

5) Completely safe place.

6) The house is cosy, clean, comfortable and fully fitted for all needs.

7) Good start position to travel around by car or on foot.

Conclusion: strong recommendation for any kind of tourists.

The title says it all!

  • 5 of 5

This is a marvellous place that completely lives up to its summary description. The house is perfectly clean and well maintained and its facilities exceed basic requirements. Fully-equipped kitchen, en-suite rooms, Wi-fi (not fast, but this is in the mountains), DVD, satellite TV (you won't need the latter two unless it rains), wood fire and central heating - if you choose to be there for the cool autumn evenings.

Even if you do nothing but read, eat and admire the view, this is a perfect place. If you want to paint or do photography then you can do it from the verandah or venture up or down the road. If you want to walk in the mountains, then there are multiple options.

Do you need transport? It depends what you want to do. Meryl's hospitality extends to picking you up from and delivering you to the train in nearby Castelnuevo di Garfagnana - besides offering advice about activity options. You can order a taxi to shop in a supermarket in Pieve Fosciana, or at the shop in Silico, a delightful village 10 minutes away. And the restaurant in Silico will not only come to collect you, but also deliver you home (the food is good, and with this service all your party can make the best of the wine). If you want to go further - and there are multiple options - then a car is worthwhile to visit castles, local markets, traditional villages, and simply to soak up the atmosphere of this unspoilt corner of Tuscany which is definitively not "Chiantishire" but has its own ambience.

Only one caveat, which in our experience applies to any and all holiday cottages: if you are serious about cooking, take your favourite knife!

  • 5 of 5

The first thing we can see when arriving is the wonderfull view we have from the house!

Secondly, the peacefull is absolutely perfect, we could only hear the birds singing!

The house was perfectly clean, lovelly flowered, and is fully comfortable and had all what we needed during our stay, and Meryl has shown us a real kindness.

We strongly recommend this house for all people who like natural environments, mountains and peaceful places!
