This is a truly unique corner of Tuscany dominated by the fascinating medieval village of Sassetta with its winding streets, stone facades and romantic arches.
Casa Castello apartment is in the historic center of Sassetta (pop.600), a hill village nestled in the woodland of Tuscany, 15 km from the beach. Panoramic views from the balconies. The apartment is on 2 levels and has it’s own private entrance in a quiet, traffic free street. Central heating and a wood burning stove.
3 large bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 7.
This area of Tuscany is one of charming, medieval hill towns, each with its own character, (Sassetta is probably the most spectacular). They are surrounded by wooded hills & olive groves, next to the coastal plain. Close by are internationally famous vineyards, centered in Bolgheri (18 kms away) . The beaches are clean & child friendly & most of the coastal area is still natural & not built up. There is an enormous children's fun park at the seaside resort nearest to us & water parks in the neighboring area.
There is a stunning new health spa with naturally hot water , saunas, Turkish baths etc recently opened close to Sassetta. The view from the apartment looks towards hills where volcanic steam rises & there are volcanic sites & a museum to visit .
There are some important archaeological sites in the area, the most famous being Popolonia with Etruscan tombs next to the famous Gulf of Baratti beach 25 kms away. Volterra an hour away has an important museum of Etruscan artifacts (plus its modern connection to the 'Twighlight 'vampire books.)
Off the coast there are many islands, Elba with its beautiful coastline & clear seas ideal for snorkeling,& Napoleon's villa is reached from the port Piombino, 35kms away. A great day out. Further south is the Isle of Giglio where the cruise ship Costa Costanzia is at present stranded on the rocks next to the port.
The Tower of Pisa is a bit over an hour's drive away, San Gimignano 90 mins & Florence & Sienna 2hours.
Sassetta has a good choice of bars & restaurants/pizzeria. Local shops, bank/ cash machine, post office, doctor & chemist, petrol station, local police station.
Cobbled street, with bakery adjacent, & grocery shop nearby.
Hunting & mushroom picking in season. Local festas & craft markets in the summer & autumn.
Arrived in Sassetta exhausted from our 24hr flight from Australia to be met by a friendly smile, Jane met us in the village & escorted to the apartment. The apartment was lovely & clean very spacious with all the amenities catered for. Views from the balcony are spectacular, Jane & Alan have lots of local knowledge & also advised us about a fun park Cavallino Matto which is only a 15 min drive, where our 3 boys had an absolute ball, plus it is quite reasonably priced. Child friendly beaches are close by (20min drive). There is a lovely pizzeria in the heart of Sassetta called 'Maria Pia' which severs the most delicious pizzas but be warned they are on the small side. There is also free parking available which is only a 3 min walk from the apartment.
Alan & Jane were exremely helpful when our car broke down as we could not speak Italian. A wonderful 14 days 'Under the Tuscan Sun'
Brilliant large apartment very reasonably priced. Although this apartment sleeps up to 8 easily we went as a six and found it would still be spacious with 8 people. The apartment was immaculately clean with everything we needed. Although there is plenty to do and visit in this area including various beaches it is also nice to enjoy some quiet time in the apartment itself just enjoying the terrific views from the balcony reading and relaxing, or you can walk around the quaint village where you can enjoy some famous italian ice cream and some fresh baked bread just yards away. Jane & Alan are very helpful and give you a warm welcome with helpful advice if needed. There are often craft fairs and Fiesta's on in the outlaying villages and towns and in Sassetta itself so look out for notices about these.
Stock up on supplies at the big supermarkets in San Vincenzo or Donoratico and use the local shops for fresh supplies. You will also find a variety of restaurants in these places catering for every pocket, but do also try the local Pizzaria which is also very good. If you get fed up with the Italian driving (only kidding) there are trains from Donoratico and San Vincenzo where you could spend the day in Florence or even in Pisa without the hassle of parking.
Overall a great base for exploring Tuscany where you can easily enjoy visiting the big attractions but have some serious peaceful time as well.
Stayed from 10 to 24 October 2012 - our second visit! Lovely accommodation, immaculately clean and good facilites, very well maintained and presented. Warm welcome from Jane and Alan and they were a great help before and during our stay. Sassetta is lovely village in the hills. Superb views from the balconies - and lots of sun! Great bakery only yards away for early morning fresh bread, lovely gelateria (much frequented!) and super little shops. Old hill village, surrounded by woodlands, not far down to coast and our very favourite beach (Barratti). Lots to do - visiting key sites including Elba, Siena, Lucca, Montepulciano, as well as local villages, craft fairs, Estruscan Archeological Park - and super sea swimming. But lovely too just to sit on the balcony and read in the sun, walk in the woods, or wander round the village - all very relaxing. Reasonable mobility is needed. We hope to return again one day.
