The street in which the cottage is situated is quiet with the only traffic the few residents going to their own houses or a few pedestrians walking to explore the beautiful village. Rue Porte de la Combe is the first street to benefit by an EU subsidized upgrade. All cables have been buried and planters with lavender run all along the street. Wifi, English TV, DVD's, Cd's, cards and games, books and maps are supplied for the guests. I am a keen cook, have ensured that the kitchen is very well equipped. About Linda Houston

I grew up in Namibia, went to Univerversity in South Africa while my parents lived in East Africa. After graduating I went to the UK where I spent 20 happy years. With my late husband's work we travelled extensively and developed a yen for foreign places. When not in my lovely cottage in Domme I now live in the winelands near Cape Town.

Linda Houston purchased this cottage in 1995

Why Linda Houston chose Domme

my husband and I spent two extended holidays looking for a bolt hole in France. We covered 14,000 km at first concentrating on which area of France we would like to live in and then narrowing the search down to villages, then houses. Domme ticked all the boxes and we then found a small grange which meant that we could totally renovate and put our own stamp on it.

What makes this cottage unique

It is located in a quiet street, newly upgraded with planters with lavender all the way down the road. Domme is situated high on a rocky outcrop above the Dordogne river and looks down on the "valley of the seven chatteaux or otherwise known as the Golden Triangle between Domme, Castelnaud and Beynac." The Daily Telegraph has voted Domme first amongst the 20 "most beautiful villages in France". The village is still surrounded by the Medieval wall and entrance to the village is through the two beautiful Medieval entrances.

Unfortunately the cottage is not suitable for very young children as it has an open staircase. Well behaved children over 8years of age are welcome. The cottage has been furnished for my own seasonal use so lacks no mod cons and is very comfortable and well furnished. As a keen cook I have made sure that the kitchen has the usual equipments plus food processors, good knives, pots and pans and there are three dinner services. I also have a selection of cook books, novels and other litrature in the bookcase. There are maps and guidebooks of France and some games. On request I can also email a long guidebook I have compiled of the area and the most important sights to include in your holiday. Furthermore there is a file in the cottage with tourist brochures and the market days in the surrounding area.

Home from home

This is our favourite place in the world apart from home. The cottage is fabulously equipped and comfortable. The village cannot be beaten. We have been four times and will probably spend another holiday there , all being well.

Charming Village

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is centrally placed in a charming village which is in easy reach of other attractions of the area.

The cottage itself was very comfortable and aesthetically a perfect fit with it's surroundings. There were more than enough restaurants and shops in the village but many others available in the surrounds and in particular Sarlat.

We had the pleasure of meeting Linda and her enthusiasm for France was obvious as was her aim to make her cottage as holiday friendly as possible - thanks Linda!!!

Charming, quaint cottage on a lovely, peaceful street in the middle of Domme.

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was well presented and very comfortable. The kitchen was very well equipped with cooking utensils and crockery. We really enjoyed being able to sit out on the little terrace at the front. Domme itself is quite a busy little tourist attraction with many restaurants and shops and an interesting cave which is well worth a visit. The views from Domme over the Dordogne are fantastic and the bakery in Cenac down the road is a must for bread, croissants and cakes. It is possible to walk to it if you don't mind the climb back up the hill.

Linda was extremely helpful before and during our visit, offering lots of information about the area and answering any queries promptly. The bottle of wine on arrival was a lovely touch and most enjoyable too.

Owner's Response: Dear Andy, I so enjoyed all the communication I had with you as your sense of humor was so evident. August is the busiest month of the year and the must-travel month for the French so it can be busy. I am always grateful that the cottage is in such a quiet little street. I hope you and your friends will return some year in the earlier summer months. Kind regards. Linda

Beautiful house right in the middle of Domme

  • 5 of 5

Great little comfortable property right in the heart of Domme. Every amenity you need in the house with a little street level patio to have a drink in the evening sun. We spent a week unwinding here, loads of restaurants and a supermarket close by. Loved the walks to the view the Dordogne river as the sun went down and walking around the ancient streets; brilliant. Parking is a minor challenge that is quickly overcome when you have located the residents parking areas.

Lovely quaint cottage in a beautiful area

  • 5 of 5

This well equipped cottage is extremely well positioned for the centre of Domme, a really beautiful walled town. It's close to restaurants and bars and of course the river and many great walks are accessible from the cottage without a car. Parking is not a problem, even for a large car, as the owner has a permit, which allows you to park in one of several car parks, which are just a couple of minutes walk away. You can also park outside the property if you have a smaller car. There are many activities that we were able to do on foot direct from the cottage, including exploring the underground caves in Domme and kayaking along the Dordogne.

We had a wonderful stay in this cottage and will cherish our memories for years to come.

Founded by Philip the Bold in 1283, the Royal Bastide of Domme is situated on a high promontory which dominates the magnificent valley of the River Dordogne and has panoramic views from its belvedere. The Daily Telegraph ranked Domme 1st in an article on the "20 most beautiful French villages" 2017

The narrow streets climb steeply past old yellow sandstone houses to the top square, Place de la Hale. The church is in one corner and in the center is the old market hall with a little balcony on round stone pillars and hanging flower baskets. Below the market is the entrance to a series of caves used as hiding places for the townsfolk in the Hundred Years Wars and Wars of Religion.

Domme is situated in a rural, leafy part of South West France, approximately 165 kilometers from the International Airports in Bordeaux (to the West)and Toulouse to the south.

Domme is in “The Golden Triangle” and there are many beautiful surrounding villages, magnificent chateaux, walks and rambles. Henry Miller, the writer, described it as “perhaps the nearest thing to Paradise on earth”.

The cottage is situated in a quiet street with only pedestrians walking to one of the old gates in the medieval wall or the few residents of the street passing . Free parking discs are given to guests.

Ideally situated for exploring the beautiful surrounding region. A detailed guide of what is available can be sent on request.

Markets: Market day in Domme is Thursday mornings and the famous market in Sarlat (10km) is on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. All surrounding villages hold fresh produce markets. Full list in the cottage.

Canoeing: Canoes and Kayaks are available for hire at Vitrac and Cenac at the bottom of the hill. Travel downstream and return transport is arranged; or take a voyage down the river in a passenger Gabarra at La Rocque Gageac.

Cycling: Cycles for hire at Cenac. Golf : 9 hole course at Domaine de Rochebois (5km).

Horse Riding: Equitation centers at Sarlat and Castlenaud.

Domme flying club where you can also take short Micro light trips over the villages.

Hot air ballooning towards La Rocque.

Erignac and Maqueyssac open to the pub.

There are many restaurants in Domme from simple street café’s to the gastronomic Esplanade. Sarlat, the nearest town, is well supplied with some excellent restaurants

Directions to the cottage: There are only 2 entrances to the walled village: Enter throught the main gate Porte de Tours and follow the one way system to the top of the village. Enter the square where the Mairi is situated and turn left at La Poste. follow the road down and take the left fork. Enter the Place de la Rhode and turn first Left after entering and then very soon right and enter the Porte de la Combe. The cottage is on the left one block down. From the other entrance into the village, Porte d'el Bos, follow the one way into the sqaure then turn first right and quickly right again into Porte de la Combe. The house is on the left at the next corner and has a metal lizard above the door.
