About Pamela & Geoffrey Iveson

We have been holidaying in France for the last 12 years, and are in the middle of refurbishing our future home for us and our two horses only 10 minutes away from Verteuil-sur-Charente . We love this area so much that it was an easy choice to decide where we wanted to live.

Why Pamela & Geoffrey Iveson chose Charente

We loved the town and all it had to offer so bought this house after one of our visits when we got lost and just found it by accident. We refurbished it to live in, but in the meantime we found somewhere with land where we can keep our horses close by. We will keep this beautiful house as our children and family love it and wanted to keep it.

What makes this house unique

The village is delightful and the view of the Château from the garden is just wonderful and made us fall in love with the house.

Wondrful house in a lovely village

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday despite the disappointing weather. Pamela and Geoffrey were friendly and welcoming without being at all intrusive. The welcoming pack provided was very welcome and even had real tea! The house has a quirky layout and was spotlessly clean with a great shower and very well appointed kitchen'. The garden at the top of the house was delightful too. We were surprised to find so many UK TV channels but mostly used the DVD player and i-pod dock.

The village is delightful with a lovely restaurant and wine bar which we visited most evenings. There area also several shops and the Moulin is worth a visit for snacks and drinks.

We would highly recommend this village house and would like to return to explore further.

Great property in idyllic setting

  • 5 of 5

We arrived quite late on a Saturday evening and the owners were there to greet us - very friendly and welcoming. The property itself was well looked after and spacious. It was very warm and welcoming and great value for the money. The location and village are superb and we had a fantastic stay. Would highly recommend a stay here.

My wife and I with our two daughters (3 and 6) stayed here for a week. Finding the property was easy, within a stones throw from the town centre. The main bedroom is a great size, v comfy bed. The backgarden has great views of the Chateau where we spent every night, great alfresco dining! The owners are particuarly helpful in receommending local attractions. Definitely woudld recommend and return without hesitation.

Quiet holiday in a lovey village

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at this property in August and we loved it. The house was clean and fully equipped and there was a welcome pack with some food, that we really appreciated. The views from the garden are certainly magnificent. The village is lovely and quiet. There are some shops where you can get some fruit or bread, and also a couple of places to go for a drink or a meal. But if you want a supermarket, you need to go to Ruffec, 5 kms away, where there is also a farmers' market twice a week. Pam and Jeff were very kind and helpful. I would definitely recommend this property to a friend and I would come back again.

The house is in the centre of this beautiful old town famous for it's fairy tale Château that stands on the banks of the river Charente. A few minutes walk from the house is the wonderful working mill set on the river bank, where the flour is still ground and the bread baked and sold in the local boulangerie. Part of the mill building forms a fabulous setting for a restaurant and coffee shop. A stones throw away over the bridge is yet another beautiful setting to take your coffee, tea and delicious cakes, or their fabulous ice creams. There are beautiful walks around the village to take as you please.Or if you want you can join one of the guided tours around the village taking in the grounds of the Château and the Château kitchens that are open to the public, the Château is still lived in by the Count. It truly is a beautiful place to stay and take in the joys of the area.

There are many beautiful places to visit within a short drive. Nanteuil-en-Vallee a village with it's medieval Abbey and arboretum, like Verteuil-sur-Charente noted as one of the areas most picturesque villages, with an abundance of flowers and old half timbered buildings. The Abbey and grounds are open to the public for guided tours at set times with a small gift shop serving teas and coffee, or if you prefer you can eat at one of the villages two superb restaurants.

Another village steeped in history a short drive away is Tusson with a small museum housed in the 16th century lodge and medieval garden where Marguerite of Angouleme the sister of King Francis the 1st once lived, open for guided tours. The village has a delightful short walk around it planted with flowers along it's route, a tea shop to take a break and a small selection of interesting shops. It also boasts one of the best restaurants in the area, and having eaten there, is well deserved.

Larger towns and cities within a short drive are;

Angouleme a beautiful city with it's old quarter set on the ramparts, an abundance of shops, cafes and restaurants, the home of Herges creator of the cartoon character Tintin. It has a fantastic water park set beside a lake that offers water sports and sailing with a man made beach for swimming. Angouleme is also famous for it's 'Circuit de Remparts' a classic and vintage car rally around the city walls, this year 18,19,20th September.

Cognac, famous for it's many distilleries all offering guided tours with tastings, something to remember and enjoy. Narrow streets with interesting shops and an array of cafes and restaurants and a beautiful public garden. There is a blues festival held every year, where bands play in the streets outside pavement cafes for free or in the castle grounds where more well know bands play, admission by ticket from 29th June to 5 July.

Saintes is yet another old city to explore and includes the remains of a Roman amphitheatre if you enjoy this period of history, or just enjoy this beautiful city and take a boat ride on the Charente.

Just outside Poitiers is Futuroscope a theme park with a difference and suitable for all ages to enjoy a full day out.

Of course there is Limoges to visit for porcelain lovers with many antique shops and interesting architecture, yet another beautiful city.

Vallee-des-Signes a fantastic experience for children to spend a day with monkeys with total freedom of the animals roaming around.

There are stretches of wonderful sandy beaches along the coast from quiet secluded coves to larger seaside towns like Royan or smaller towns like St-Palais-sur-Mer full of all amenities, cafes, restaurants and shops.

Not forgetting the wonderful Zoo at La Palmyre, the best we have ever visited, suitable for all ages and a full day out so set out early.

Noted as 'one of the hundred places to visit' is the Ile-de-Re. Harbour villages and cycle paths adorn this island just off La Rochelle where there are leafy squares, dunes and pine forests. Working fishing boats to watch and see the days catch landed and cycle around to see the donkeys, a specific breed only found here. Cycle hire is recommended and the best all purpose beach is Le Bois Plage.
