Overview

About the property

2 bedroom cottage with fabulous view overlooking the English Channel

Chelsea Cottage is extremely comfortable and well-equipped, and has recently been comprehensively renovated and redecorated to a high standard throughout. The lounge, front bedroom and patios face south east and command a panoramic view of the English Channel and its shipping; the top patio receives the sun all day. The cottage is set back from the street and is very quiet. There is satellite TV, a DVD player, radio/CD player, internet/wifi, a large assortment of board games and a good selection of books, including literature about the Island. In the front bedroom there is a large desk which makes this a great place for those wanting to get away to work in a peaceful environment with a view. The well-equipped kitchen adjoins the dining room, which seats 6 comfortably. The stairs are quite steep, but there is a handrail, and 2 stair gates are provided. Steps lead down to the secluded lower patio where there is a garden seat and washing line.

The cottage is ideally situated, since, while quiet and with a fantastic view, it is in Ventnor town and so close to shops and other facilities. It can also easily be reached by public transport (frequent local bus services to all parts of the Island). It takes 10-15 minutes to walk to Ventnor and Bonchurch beaches.

Ventnor was developed as a resort in Victorian times and had many famous holiday residents, including Edward Elgar. Its history is evident in its houses and in such details as the rings for bathing machines still visible on the beach. The neighbouring village of Bonchurch is steeped in history, with its tiny Norman church and its Victorian mansions. Charles Dickens wrote part of David Copperfield whilst staying at Bonchurch, which he described as 'the prettiest place I ever saw in my life, at home or abroad'.

Ventnor and the Undercliff are renowned for their benign climate, since they receive the fresh sea air and are sheltered from cold northerly winds. The famous Botanic Gardens, built on the site of the old TB hospital, have plants from all over the world.

Today Ventnor has all essential shops as well as an interesting selection of cafés and restaurants catering for all tastes and pockets. Fish landed straight from the boat is on sale daily at the beach.

Ventnor's situation is stunning, nestling on the slopes of St Boniface Down. It is steeply terraced and has been called the English Madeira. It is a centre for many interesting walks - through Bonchurch and the Landslip towards Shanklin or along the cliffs to Steephill Cove, where you can buy fresh seafood products or have tea on the lovely beach. This beach is our favourite: quiet and great for swimming and rock-pooling. The coastal path continues to St Catherine's Lighthouse and beyond towards the wilder West Wight., where there is a stunning view from the View Point car park above Blackgang Chine. The Island is a geologist's paradise, and along this coast you can go on a guided dinosaur trail, looking at fossils.

The Isle of Wight packs a huge amount of interest into a small space. Inland there are miles of footpaths and cycle routes on the Downs and along the old railway lines. Historic houses such as Osborne House (the holiday home of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert), Nunwell Manor and Arreton Manor are worth a visit, and you can go even further back in time at Carisbrooke Castle (where Charles I was imprisoned) and Brading Roman Villa with its unique mosaics. There are vineyards and local breweries, and plenty of good fresh local food to be found.

There are lots of family attractions: Sandown Zoo, Blackgang Chine, crazy golf, Robin Hill country park and Havenstreet Steam Railway to name but a few, and you are never far away from a family-friendly pub.

The Isle of Wight has events such as the Walking Festivals, Cycling Festival and Garlic Festival, and each town has its own Carnival in August.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Chelsea Cottage is a lovely cottage with absolutely stunning views. It is in a really quiet area, within walking distance of the town centre. It is a very well equipped, cosy, comfortable home from home.

We were warned prior to going that the stairs are quite steep, they are, but handled with care ( worse coming down than going up ! ) they are fine.

Everything was well thought of. It was lovely to see lots of little personal things around like family photos, little knick knacks, and favorite bits of art.

There was only one tiny little thing that I would comment on, I would of liked a mirror in the main bedroom. But such a minor detail really.

On the whole it was a really enjoyable experience and a real pleasure to come back to after a day out.

We would definitely book it again and recommended it to our friends and family.

We would rate it 10 out of 10 with 100 out of 10 for the views!

We very much hope to come back to the Island very soon and your beautiful home will be our first choice. We loved it so much

Thank you again.

Well equipped cottage with amazing view

  • 5 of 5

Chelsea Cottage is a lovely place to stay, with beautiful sea views from the sitting room and main bedroom. It is clean, well equipped and comfortable with a lot of useful information for visitors about local places of interest. The cottage provides a good base to explore the island, but equally good are the many local walks along the coast or across the downs. The front terrace is a wonderful sun trap, even in the winter and a great place for meals, weather permitting! We have used the cottage on many occasions and would highly recommend it.

The perfect weekend home away from home

  • 5 of 5

We cannot recommend this cottage highly enough. As a group of 6 we thought perhaps the rooms might be too small, but the bunk beds are easily big enough to fit me at 5ft 9! The kitchen is fully equipped, and there are plenty of blankets for an evening sat at on the balcony.

The view is very special too, and the living room feels spacious and airy with the massive windows.

We would happily book again, and found the price to be very reasonable! Thank you for a lovely stay.

the cottage, location, isle never fails us....

  • 5 of 5

As always the cottage is very welcoming, comfortable and has everything you need for a thoroughly enjoyable holiday. The view from the back living room is absolutely fab for a sea view property. Its so wide and such fun to look out and watch the ferries passing at night with their lights on. Ventnor is re-inventing itself as a foodie destination. Lots to choose from and we enjoyed a cheese fondue at Cantina. The staff were very helpful and friendly...best to book. The island has so much to offer...something different to visit each day to suit all ages. Nothing takes long to get to as the island is not that big. The ferry over from Southampton to Cowes takes an hour and so much to look at on the way.

Lovely cottage with stunning sea views

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely short break at Chelsea Cottage with our two young children. The cottage has everything you need with the added bonus of amazing sea views. It is decorated beautifully and has a very homely feel; we all noted how comfy the beds were! The highlight of our stay was eating dinner on the terrace - in April! It is only a short walk from the shops and sea front so a great location - as well as being a good base to explore the rest of the island. We will definitely be back!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We are pleased that you enjoyed your family holiday in Chelsea Cottage and found it comfortable. You were lucky to have had such mild weather in April - although the garden is very sheltered and we have often been able to enjoy being outside when it is less possible elsewhere! We look forward to welcoming you again another time. Mary and Chris

Beautiful property with spectacular views.

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful stay here. The cottage was well equipped with all the essentials. The view from the lounge and master bedroom was breathtaking. We were blessed with some beautiful weather too. The only downside was the lack of parking near the property. As we went during peak season, even the surrounding roads were busy. We often had to park a long way from the cottage. Although we knew this would be the case, it would put us off staying again. This us a real shame as the cottage itself was wonderful.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write your review. We are very glad you enjoyed your holiday in Ventnor and found the cottage an excellent and comfortable place to stay. We know that the parking can be frustrating at times, in the peak season particularly, but we are at least fortunate to have spaces across the road where it is always possible to drop off before finding a parking space. Many people have said that although it can be a bit annoying at times not to be able to park outside, once inside the cottage this is more than compensated for by the cosiness, the spectacular view, the garden and the convenient location.
