Comfortable cottage with stunning sea view in Ventnor, Isle of Wight

Overview

Property

Updated: 05-Dec-2016
2 bedroom cottage with fabulous view overlooking the English Channel

Chelsea Cottage is extremely comfortable and well-equipped, and has recently been comprehensively renovated and redecorated to a high standard throughout. The lounge, front bedroom and patios face south east and command a panoramic view of the English Channel and its shipping; the top patio receives the sun all day. The cottage is set back from the street and is very quiet. There is satellite TV, a DVD player, radio/CD player, internet/wifi, a large assortment of board games and a good selection of books, including literature about the Island. In the front bedroom there is a large desk which makes this a great place for those wanting to get away to work in a peaceful environment with a view. The well-equipped kitchen adjoins the dining room, which seats 6 comfortably. The stairs are quite steep, but there is a handrail, and 2 stair gates are provided. Steps lead down to the secluded lower patio where there is a garden seat and washing line.

The cottage is ideally situated, since, while quiet and with a fantastic view, it is in Ventnor town and so close to shops and other facilities. It can also easily be reached by public transport (frequent local bus services to all parts of the Island). It takes 10-15 minutes to walk to Ventnor and Bonchurch beaches.

Ventnor was developed as a resort in Victorian times and had many famous holiday residents, including Edward Elgar. Its history is evident in its houses and in such details as the rings for bathing machines still visible on the beach. The neighbouring village of Bonchurch is steeped in history, with its tiny Norman church and its Victorian mansions. Charles Dickens wrote part of David Copperfield whilst staying at Bonchurch, which he described as 'the prettiest place I ever saw in my life, at home or abroad'.

Ventnor and the Undercliff are renowned for their benign climate, since they receive the fresh sea air and are sheltered from cold northerly winds. The famous Botanic Gardens, built on the site of the old TB hospital, have plants from all over the world.

Today Ventnor has all essential shops as well as an interesting selection of cafés and restaurants catering for all tastes and pockets. Fish landed straight from the boat is on sale daily at the beach.

Ventnor's situation is stunning, nestling on the slopes of St Boniface Down. It is steeply terraced and has been called the English Madeira. It is a centre for many interesting walks - through Bonchurch and the Landslip towards Shanklin or along the cliffs to Steephill Cove, where you can buy fresh seafood products or have tea on the lovely beach. This beach is our favourite: quiet and great for swimming and rock-pooling. The coastal path continues to St Catherine's Lighthouse and beyond towards the wilder West Wight., where there is a stunning view from the View Point car park above Blackgang Chine. The Island is a geologist's paradise, and along this coast you can go on a guided dinosaur trail, looking at fossils.

The Isle of Wight packs a huge amount of interest into a small space. Inland there are miles of footpaths and cycle routes on the Downs and along the old railway lines. Historic houses such as Osborne House (the holiday home of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert), Nunwell Manor and Arreton Manor are worth a visit, and you can go even further back in time at Carisbrooke Castle (where Charles I was imprisoned) and Brading Roman Villa with its unique mosaics. There are vineyards and local breweries, and plenty of good fresh local food to be found.

There are lots of family attractions: Sandown Zoo, Blackgang Chine, crazy golf, Robin Hill country park and Havenstreet Steam Railway to name but a few, and you are never far away from a family-friendly pub.

The Isle of Wight has events such as the Walking Festivals, Cycling Festival and Garlic Festival, and each town has its own Carnival in August.

Chelsea Cottage is a lovely cottage with absolutely stunning views. It is in a really quiet area, within walking distance of the town centre. It is a very well equipped, cosy, comfortable home from home.

We were warned prior to going that the stairs are quite steep, they are, but handled with care ( worse coming down than going up ! ) they are fine.

Everything was well thought of. It was lovely to see lots of little personal things around like family photos, little knick knacks, and favorite bits of art.

There was only one tiny little thing that I would comment on, I would of liked a mirror in the main bedroom. But such a minor detail really.

On the whole it was a really enjoyable experience and a real pleasure to come back to after a day out.

We would definitely book it again and recommended it to our friends and family.

We would rate it 10 out of 10 with 100 out of 10 for the views!

We very much hope to come back to the Island very soon and your beautiful home will be our first choice. We loved it so much

Thank you again.

Wonderful views and lovely quiet location.

  • 4 of 5

The property was very well appointed with everything we needed, although some large plastic spoons for serving food from saucepans would be useful (unless we were expected to use metal spoons on non stick saucepans). The description was mostly accurate although we were surprised to find that the bathroom could only be accessed through the second bedroom which was a downside for us. I noticed that one previous reviewer had said that a mirror in the main bedroom would be useful, but no mirror had been added. The property was clean and well maintained and the owner was really helpful, both on email and on the telephone. Yes I would recommend it to friends or relatives, but making sure they knew about the bathroom access and the very steep stairs. 5 minute walk into the town of Ventnor with good restaurants and shops. Village of Bonchurch worth a visit, also walking distance. Osborne House was fantastic: you need at least 3-4 hours to do it justice. We wish we had known about the PLUTO project which sounded fascinating. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay, but we were rather surprised about your comments on the bathroom and the stairs. We have always taken care to provide an accurate description so that guests know exactly what to expect. The description in our advert on Home Away states very clearly under ‘Facilities’ that Bathroom: ‘The bathroom is small, with a toilet, sink and a bath with an electric shower. It is accessed through the back bedroom’. Bedroom: ‘The bathroom leads off the back bedroom’. Overview: ‘The stairs are quite steep, but there is a handrail, and 2 stair gates are provided’. On our own website www.chelsecott.co.uk in the description we state: ‘Note that access to the bathroom is via the rear bedroom’. And regarding the stairs we have a section in the description entitled ‘Safety’ that states ‘We must draw your attention to the fact that with this being a Victorian cottage, the stairs are quite steep and not ideal for the very elderly or the infirm, although there is a secure handrail. Two safety gates for children are provided for the stairs’. I am sorry that there was a misunderstanding but it is always important to read the descriptions carefully to avoid disappointment. There is a full length mirror in the back bedroom and a mirror in the bathroom, but I agree that some people would like to have a mirror in the front bedroom. I have been looking for one that can stand on the chest of drawers or inside the wardrobe as not everyone wants to have one on the bedroom wall – I will try to get that sorted so as not to disappoint other guests. Thank you for your suggestion of some plastic spoons – I will provide some next time I am there. Mary and Chris

Very, very lovely!

Four of us had a very relaxing week at this cottage. The view is just as it looks in the photos - stunning!

This cottage is just like walking into somebody's house - all the things you need are there, and some you hadn't thought of. All those small items you usually have to buy when you get there (or stuff in the car) are provided. There are even board games and books to occupy you on rainy days. My girls spent ages playing with the toys they found in boxes under the bed.

It's warm, comfortable, cosy and quiet. The only downside is the parking - but if you get back before people come home from work its not bad at all.

We were lucky to get the week we wanted and will definitely be booking again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write your review. We are so pleased that you had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday in our cottage, and found it well equipped. We like to feel that there is plenty in the cottage to entertain and amuse the whole family when the weather isn't so good. We acknowledge that parking can be a bit of a problem sometimes, but there is space to drop off before finding a space, and we hope that any inconvenience is outweighed by the comfort of the cottage - and of course the wonderful view. We look forward to welcoming you on a future visit. Mary and Chris

Stunning view

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay in Chelsea cottage. Everything is catered for in the house, plenty of space for us (2 adults and a 4 year old) and safe for children to play in. They even had a few childrens toys and books.

The house is also in a good location, just up the hill from the local shops and about a 10 min walk to Ventnor harbour.

The view from the back of the house is stunning, the beautiful sea view can be seen from the comfort of the front room or if the weather is nice enough, sit in the terrace garden. We would definitely stay again.

Well Located Cottage With Fantastic Bay Views

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to the IOW and we had a wonderful week in this beautiful cottage. The sitting room and view are just as shown in the photo and the two patios provide not only an excellent and relaxing view but also a sheltered sunspot. The galley kitchen is small but well equipped and the owner has provided you with everything in the house that you could possibly need. Mary was great to deal with and responded very promptly to my queries. I left behind a pair of reading glasses and Mary rang me to get my address so that they could be sent onto me which I really appreciate. A lovely comfortable cottage in the nicest spot on the island.Thoroughly recommended.

Excelent cottage will be back

We had a really enjoyable stay in Chelsea Cottage. It is a lovely clean, well equipped, cosy, comfortable home from home. The views are just stunning, even on a cold wet day, sat in the lovely sunroom was a pleasure. Everything was really well thought off. It was in a really quiet area but within walking distance to the town centre and all the amenities.

We were warned prior to going that the stairs are steep, they are, but if handled with care ( Worse coming down than going up ! ) they are fine.

My only very small comment was the lack of a mirror in the main bedroom, but such a minor detail really.

Overall our stay was wonderful and we would recommend Chelsea Cottage to friends and family with out hesitation. We also hope to return soon and this would be our first option.
